Greedy Owners Put NFL in Jeopardy by Opting Out of Collective Bargaining Agreement
"The NFL officially notified its players union on Tuesday that it will opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement, which could lead to a season without a salary cap in 2010 and a possible lockout in 2011. Owners voted unanimously Tuesday morning to opt out of the deal, which was extended in March 2006. The NFL had until November to opt out, but decided to do it early instead of waiting for the deadline. The league, however, emphasized that it will keep negotiating with the NFL Players Association and said games will be played "without threat of interruption for at least the next three seasons." Apparently the biggest issue is that teams can't go after a bonus paid to a player if he breaches his contract? BUT, the NFL is the only sport without guaranteed contracts, players routinely get hurt and often seriously injured, and former players are bringing their post NFL injuries to light (this is the tip of the iceberg). For those reasons and the history of work stoppages in pro sports seriously impacting its popularity, I was very surprised to hear the owners unanimously voted against this. Someone should tell the owners that there might not be replacement players (like Keanu Reeves) ready to lace em up. Hopefully this will be resolved soon! ? but I doubt it will.

When it comes to playing, the shelf life of most players is 2-3 years. This is a sport that sees career ending injuries every Sunday and former players living with chronic pain. The players are the ones who should get as much money as they can and I doubt the'll be giving too many concessions. If the owners and players can't come to an agreement and we see a labor stopage it will irreperably damage the league and the owners will wish this never happened.
