LIST: BEST Players to ever wear the number.......
With all the NFL teams starting camps within the next few weeks and the Hall of fame game within the next month, on Saturday, Aug. 2, the Class of 2008 will be formally inducted into the Hall during an enshrinement ceremony that is not only a moving and inspirational salute to the game's all-time greats; it is also one of the most spectacular events in all of sports. I can't help but think of that Class of 2008 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees and all the legends that have ever played the game. The 6 enshrinees for 2008 are Defensive end Fred Dean, cornerback Darrell Green, wide receiver Art Monk, cornerback Emmitt Thomas, linebacker Andre Tippett, and tackle Gary Zimmerman. This make me wonder about all the players we saw play when we were kids and also the ones that we only read about. To an athlete one of the things that link them to their legacy is their number, their jersey number. So I gave myself a project of putting together a list of the BEST PLAYERS to ever wear their numbers. This list is the best players to ever were the numbers 00, 0 - 99. Here's a list of players that I think are or were the BEST Players to ever wear the #'s 0-99. Some we will agree on and some we won't. Who knows, maybe someday we can agree on a final list most of us can agree upon. Let's get started. Lets have fun with this guys and gals and please lets keep it clean for all parties who may want to participate with us. Thank You... Now, let the debates begin... 0. Wilber "Pete" Henry 00. Have you ever heard of Emlen Tunnell? If not, you'll know of him now. He's the best NFL athlete to have ever worn the jersey number 45, and he is a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Tunnell played two primary positions during his NFL career (punt and kick returner and defensive back - mostly safety). Tunnell played fourteen years in the NFL, between 1948 and 1961, primarily as a New York Giant. He also spent three years at the end of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers. What did he achieve in his fourteen year Hall of Fame career?
9 time Pro Bowler
8 time All Pro
79 career interceptions
1,282 career interception return yards
2,217 career punt return yards
1949 league leader for INTs returned for TDs (2)
1952 league leader for fumbles recoverd (6)
100 yard kick return in 1951
Twice led league in non-offensive TDs (1949 and 1951)
1967 Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee
1956 NFL Champion with the New York Giants
1961 NFL Champion with the Green Bay Packers

bettis had no moves.... he lowered his head and went straigh until he found the ground. westbrook is like a figured skater out there dancing around defenders and he has solid power.
I know statistically bettis has plenty of yards for a career but i watched him play every damn game and never once was i impressed.
if you compare stats, then the argument can't be made, but if you had to choose a RB to build a team around today and they were both rookies who would you pick....? honestly its not really that hard to get a find a glorified FB to pound the ball play after play.....
look at the avg yds per carry...Bettis has a significantly lower avg but 5 times had 300+ carries for a season, if Westbrook had those carries then he would be setting rushing records...
TheDean1
replied July 22, 2008
First of all, Westbrook, as good as he is, would make it carrying the rock 300+ times a year. He is to injury prone for that, however, he is smart enough to move around and not take those head on hits as much and learned to catch the ball at an early age and its that combo that makes, Brian Westbrook special. But he does get nicked up, a lot, as for an around RB he is far better. The schemes they play(ed) in suit their assets and the teams play books.
By the way, if you have me blocked, why do you keep coming in to post? Don't get me wrong, I don't mind, but why play both sides of the fence?

you have some kinda prob with me and thats too bad for you....
I offer my opinion and you seem to think yours is "better" therefore mine is discredited.... get over yourself
furthermore, just because you think Westbrook can't handle that many carries does not make it true, i'm very sure if he weren't catching 90 passes he could handle 90 more carries.... bringing his 2007 total touches toooo.... 368? yeah he cant hadle 300 plus.( please excuse his versatility, the reason he doesn't have more carries)..... the most touches Bettis had in any year was 390.... in comparison Westbrook had more yards and more TDs..... therefore more efficient(or effective) when he touches the ball...... thank you come again

The only Center in the NFL to ever play the position was Dwight Stephenson (Dolphins) 1980-87, and he even said, Mike Webster is the best center to ever play the game, and Stephenson made the ALL CENTURY TEAM. the SLEEVELESS WONDER. May he rest in peace.
As for Joiner, he was a great when passing wasn't the biggest part of the game like it is today, however he was on a pass happy team for years. But Manning has and arm like a laser, is in my option the BEST STUDY of the game and he calls his own plays during the game which isn't done on very many teams these days, so that why I pick Manning, but also, between the two, that's why I said coin flip. In their primes, I'd take either one on my team.
As for Rice, I think we both agree, for #80 the BEST to EVER wear the number.
Thanks for your post, points and job well done.

But the guy wouldn't and didn't want to TACKLE ANYONE. Sorry as great as he was, I'd take LT2 over Deion.
that is why I wouldn't count PRIMETIME as the BEST to EVER wear #21, not over LT. Now I would say he wore the BEST NUMBER if he wore #45, look at some of our posts here and you'll see why, LOL. But sorry, I can't at #21.
Good post though and he was great at what he did, just wish he wasn't so afraid to tackle.

LT is great..... but if Westbrook can't be the best at 36 because of his lack of years then LT can't be #21 for that reason also.
i'm seeing a trend, in your opinion a stronger player is better than a faster player...

its a great article, I love it.... wouldn't be blogging otherwise.... i disagree with 2 out of 100 and you can't accept my opinion.... its sad. Then try to tell me I need more concrete evidence showing an argument... dude we both know enough about sports that I dont need to go and list the career stats of every player i mention.....
as for best coach ever I'm gonna have to think of that a bit.... it really comes down to what type of coach you're looking for.... and what your team needs... longevity, rebuilding, tough love, etc.
love blogging with ya, Rock on!

As for your accepting your opinions, 'cmon, if I didn't why would I spend the time ruffling an Eagles feathers? LOL.
Here's one for ya, Why in the hell can't Marty Schottenhymer win the BIG one? The man can coach, and he's proven that with lesser talented teams and th man can win regular season games but I'll be damed if he can get to the second round or better. What are your thoughts on the one?
Cheers for now.

That said, if you look at the list I do have Westbrook over Bettis. As for Deion, he was a great cover corner, however, really what's the #5 QB have to do with anything? There are teams that have the same thing, they just don't list them. All that aside, LT2 today, I feel is the BEST EVER to wear #21, he's not the flashiest, although he is pretty quick, LOL, no one was as flashy as PRIMETIME. LT2, holds the records in the NFL that won't be broke for awhile, short of a championship ring, he will, in my opinion go down in history as ONE of the BEST BACKS to EVER play the POSITION of RB. Can we agree on that?
As for your cutting you down, by no means am I doing that, we just don't see it the same way on some issues. A good example would be like, The Tuna, not everyone likes his ways or opinions but he does what he does and it is his way of doing what he does best. Here's one for you... It's like putting this out there as a question,
Who do you think is the BEST Coach EVER out of this list...
Shula
The Tuna
Chuck Noll
Lombardi
Landry
Gibbs
Well you may comeback with an answer and reason and also support your reason, however, there are going to be people out there thinking your full of crap no matter who you pick, others will pick some else on the list or not even on the list, and they to will give their reasons and support those reasons, then there are those who will come up with some someone like, Al Davis, when coached the Raiders. Just remember this my friend, I don't what anyone tells you, this is a FACT..."You can NEVER fail an opinion test. Please do speak your mind, its all good.
Great post, come on back if you'd like, you and ANYONE else in the YARD are always WELCOME.

and if you take randy from 84 you can put shannon sharpe there because randy will probly retire 81 with the patriots
terrence newman 41? id go Lorenzo neal. the best fullback i have ever seen (only 17 so havent seen many so maybe there is better...)

FYI In his 14 NFL seasons, Centers rushed for 2,188 yards, caught 827 passes for 6,797 yards, returned 5 punts for 30 yards, returned 33 kickoffs for 617 yards. and scored 42 touchdowns (14 rushing/28 receiving).
Centers 826 receptions are currently the most by any non-wide receiver in NFL history. Because NFL fullbacks are now almost exclusively used as blockers, Centers may be remembered as the greatest pass receiving fullback, if not running backs in general, ever, and one of the last to be used as a ball carrier.
* 3x Pro Bowl selection (1995, 1996, 2001)
* All-Pro selection (1996)
* Super Bowl champion (XXXVIII)
Receptions 827
Receiving Yards 6,797
Total Touchdowns 42
Prior to playing for the Chargers, Neal has had stints with the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, and Cincinnati Bengals. Neal is also currently the NFL's highest paid fullback gaining a three year extension after becoming a free agent in 2007, which was worth 5.1 million dollars.
Neal is best known as an exceptional blocking fullback, and has lead blocked for 1000 yard rushers in 11 straight seasons (Adrian Murrell in 1997, Warrick Dunn in 1998, Eddie George in 1999-2000, Corey Dillon from 2001-2002, and LaDainian Tomlinson from 2003 to 2007.)
On February 28, 2008 Neal was released by San Diego because of Norv Turner's new offense and also
* 4x Pro Bowl selection (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007)
* 3x All-Pro selection (2005, 2006, 2007)
So when it comes to FB your team scheme plays a big part of it. Stats wise Centers was by far the better FB. As for a blocking FB, Centers couldn't carry Lorenzo Neal's jock. Again, all this depends on the Off. Coor./Head Coach and their schemes that makes or breaks a FB and in some cases, their career.
Centers was a multi propose FB and great at it, however, in a featured blocking back scheme and all you want is a blocker, hands down Neal would be my pick. All that aside, can you imagine being able to say you have or were a lead blocker for 11 straight seasons and your starting RB's all rushed for over 1000 yards. I'd have to say, if I was a coach or coordinator I'd want him.
Thanks for the post.

AS for arguments over your FB thing, there's no arguement, and STAT wise Centers was a great FB. MY point was and still is, AS A BLOCKING FB, NEAL WAS THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN., LOL... Centers did everything you'd ask of a running back not a fullback and his stats prove that fact, I agree with you there so why are you so upset?
Great posts
squish059
replied July 22, 2008
I guess with some (most) positions it comes down to what your team scheme is built around.... Center would more than thrive in a good west coast Off.. and Neal could make a running game thrive anywhere...
i'm wondering does LT get credit for being great although having had a great FB.... or does Neal get credit for being great for having a great RB?

Joe Green is Mean Joe Green of the Pittsburgh Steelers and has 4 SB Rings, great teams for Pitts in the 70's. He was a Line coach in the NFL, he still maybe, however he was with the dolphins, and since the TUNA came to town I don't know if he's still there I'd have to check. Jonathon Ogden, great player, a HOF player, I think he'll make 1st ballot. Your right, he should be on the list, however, I still think Decon Jones was the Best to wear #75. If sack records were kept back then he'dave the record for most sacks in a season, career and maybe even game. He was great against the run and O-lineman hated and, YES, FEARED him. I still wonder what a team would have been like with Decon Jones and Dick Butkus, whewwww, Dangerous, they both had the same attitude both on and off the field. Great guys and friends off the field, but on the field, including practices, everyone on the opposing team had a target on their back and jones and butkus were the bullets and teams knew that, but couldn't do anything about it. Again, whewwww.
Lorenzo Neal was a great full back, he blocked like a tank and opened damn good holes for the RB's to see and get through.

1) I've got to take my man Steve Young over Troy Aikman. I think Aikman is overrated because the offense around him was so good, specifically the offensive line. Aikman was had all the time in the world and was hardly ever touched. Emmit Smith was one of the best backs in the game and ran through gaping holes, setting up an easy passing game.
2) Merriman shouldn't be mentioned next to LT.

Athlete Number 67 - Bob Kuechenberg
The story of the best athlete to wear the jersey number 67 is an interesting one. Bob Kuechenberg was drafted out of Notre Dame by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 1969 NFL draft. He was subsequently cut by the Eagles and picked up by the Atlanta Falcons whereby he was immediately released. After working as a salesman for a period of time, Kuechenberg was picked up as a free agent by the Miami Dolphins. He went on to play fourteen seasons as a guard with the Miami Dolphins, being named to six Pro Bowls.
Kuechenberg was a part of the Dolphins championship teams in Super Bowls VII and VIII. Bob was extremely durable as an NFL lineman, with consecutive start streaks of 53, 42 and 49 games. He also fractured his back in August of 1977 and was still able to come back as a starter that season after missing only two regular season games.
Did you know.....that only Dan Marino has played in more Dolphins games than Bob Kuechenberg?

When I showed the list around for the groups opinion before posting it, I asked this question...Which one of the three following lists would make for a stronger and more accreate list... These were my 3 choices for them.
List #3
At #1 Warren Moon
At #3 Bronko Nagurski and
At #21 Jim Thorpe
But we didn't think Moon was better than Thorpe, Nagurski had to be on the list, and if we put Thorpe at #21 what about Deion and LT2. Any by avoiding the Deion, LT2 issue by putting Jim Thorpe at #21, was the wimps way out of doing the right thing, but would it make for a stronger list? That was the $64,000 question I had.
List #2
At #1 Warren Moon
At #3 Jim Thorpe
At #21 Deion Sanders
Should Bronko Nagurski be completely off the list to add Deion at #21? Would that make for a stronger more accurate list?
List #1
At #1 Jim Thorpe
At #3 Bronko Nagurski and
At #21 LT2
This list won on our poll by 17 votes over list #3, As a team here we felt that Thorpe and Nagurski had to be on the final list and more people thought LT2 over Deion would make for a stronger more accurate list so we went with that one for print. However, the YARD likes Deion better so it seems.
Our next tough spots were #'s 45 and 67. We just couldn't come up with any real SOLID PICKS other than what you see. Do you or the YARD have any for those 2 #'s? Honestly, we thought that those 2 #'s would be the biggest issue in the YARD vs the #21 pick, funny how things turned out.
Great post and thank for coming in to comment.

#45 - Ernie Davis?
#73 - Joe Klecko
TheDean1
replied July 24, 2008
Ernie Davis never played after he got drafted, what a back field that would have been with him and Jim Brown. He's the only Heisman trophy winner for Syracuse Univ. and to think Jim Brown played there too and didn't win it. Believe it or not Jim Browns best sport wasn't football, it was Lacrosse. Ernie also played his High School ball about 20 minutes from me, in the Elmira, ny area. Great kid, life cut way short to soon.
As for Klecko, liked him too but I didn't consider him for the list though at #73, good pick.

Now Haley, those 5SB rings is very amazing and over WARE right now I'd have to agree, Bruce Matthews is also a very good pick, But I'd still take Olsen.
Not doubting this pick at #46, by why do you say Edwards?
Overall very impressive picks, GREAT job...
