LIST: BEST Players to ever wear the number.......

With all the NFL teams starting camps within the next few weeks and the Hall of fame game within the next month, on Saturday, Aug. 2, the Class of 2008 will be formally inducted into the Hall during an enshrinement ceremony that is not only a moving and inspirational salute to the game's all-time greats; it is also one of the most spectacular events in all of sports. I can't help but think of that Class of 2008 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees and all the legends that have ever played the game. The 6 enshrinees for 2008 are Defensive end Fred Dean, cornerback Darrell Green, wide receiver Art Monk, cornerback Emmitt Thomas, linebacker Andre Tippett, and tackle Gary Zimmerman. This make me wonder about all the players we saw play when we were kids and also the ones that we only read about. To an athlete one of the things that link them to their legacy is their number, their jersey number. So I gave myself a project of putting together a list of the BEST PLAYERS to ever wear their numbers. This list is the best players to ever were the numbers 00, 0 - 99. Here's a list of players that I think are or were the BEST Players to ever wear the #'s 0-99. Some we will agree on and some we won't. Who knows, maybe someday we can agree on a final list most of us can agree upon. Let's get started. Lets have fun with this guys and gals and please lets keep it clean for all parties who may want to participate with us. Thank You... Now, let the debates begin... 0. Wilber "Pete" Henry 00. i choose Brian Dawkins by far at #20

rhcp, Dawkins is a good choice, but why him over say, Barry? Barry still holds several records in the NFL, retired at the peak of his game, and is a HOF'er too. This by no means is to say that Dawkins is bad, he too will be in the hall right now, and as of today, that is why I choose Barry. With a crapy line for the most part, he still is one of the best RB's to ever play the game. And I feel he was the best PUREST RUNNER to ever put on a jersey.
      • rhcp879
my bad, for some reason i forgot they were listed by #, and thought they were listed by position. I thought it said Bob Sanders.
        • TheDean1
no problem, any others you think we should look at?
      • SSGMAT
Yes I agree, but I haven't seen Dawkins fall asleep on the sidelines in the middle of a game either.
        • TheDean1
          LOL, good one...

and i was surprised 2 see TJ Duckett on the list...

LOL, rhcp, to be honest, I can't really think of any player that wears 45 that would fit the bill of the BEST to wear #45, do you know of anyone? or does anyone in the YARD have the BEST to WEAR #45?
      • rhcp879
true, i didn't really think about that.

          any others come to mind?

NFL Athlete Number 45 - Emlen Tunnell

Have you ever heard of Emlen Tunnell? If not, you'll know of him now. He's the best NFL athlete to have ever worn the jersey number 45, and he is a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Tunnell played two primary positions during his NFL career (punt and kick returner and defensive back - mostly safety). Tunnell played fourteen years in the NFL, between 1948 and 1961, primarily as a New York Giant. He also spent three years at the end of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers. What did he achieve in his fourteen year Hall of Fame career?

        9 time Pro Bowler
        8 time All Pro
        79 career interceptions
        1,282 career interception return yards
        2,217 career punt return yards
1949 league leader for INTs returned for TDs (2)
1952 league leader for fumbles recoverd (6)
100 yard kick return in 1951
Twice led league in non-offensive TDs (1949 and 1951)
1967 Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee
1956 NFL Champion with the New York Giants
1961 NFL Champion with the Green Bay Packers

SSGMAT... Good one, you'll see I have him at #45 as the best, I was just wondering if there were others I may have missed that might have been better in the minds of others. I agree from all I've seen and read, Emlen Tunnell is the Best to wear #45 (See my list above #45)

          Great post SSGMAT

TJ Houshmandzadeh over Randy Moss? Randy had more TD's in his few years with the number 84 than TJ might have his whole career.

Whitejordan...very good catch, my bad, I must have been drunk on this one. And you also my be right about your
Randy had more TD's in his few years with the number 84 than TJ might have his whole career, comment, too...
      I stand corrected. Good job.
  • whitejordan32
You put Steve Largent over 2 people for #80. WHERE IS JERRY RICE? Rice may be the greatest ever at any position and for him not to be mentioned as the best #80 is crazy

Marvin Harrison doesn't get mentioned at all for #88??? Check his stats.

And I can't see any good #67s but Ugoh has only played one year.

Jerry Rice is tied for 80 i think.
    • TheDean1
whitejordan...I agree with #80, as for #88, for me it was a hard pick, but I could only pick one to be the best. I do though think Marvin just may end up there with Rice to be called the BEST to ever play the position. What do you think?

As for #67, Ugoh, I can't think of anyone else that even wore #67, can you or anyone in the YARD have anyone in mind???
  • TheDean1
Who does the Yard think should be called the BEST to EVER WEAR the #88? Please also back up your pick for all of us.

I'm gonna go with Marvin. The guy is automatic. He's been better than T.O and Randy Moss who get all the attention for one reason or the other. As a guy who lives in Indy, it's crazy to see how Marv's name gets called on ESPN about once for every time T.O is named and Marv is better, and has been better. Marv has over 100 more receptions and almost 1000 more yards. He has 6 less touchdowns but he has Marv has had Reggie Wayne to share the TD load with him while T.O hasn't had anyone close to him since Rice was there when T.O was young. I know its not between T.O and Marvin, but I think Marvin isn't as "sexy" to many people because he doesn't get noticed as much.
      • TheDean1
WhiteJordan...I am a SUPER HUGE MARVIN FAN, I had season tickets for 3 years at the DOME in Syracuse when he played and said then he'd be something special at the next level. However, is he the BEST EVER to wear #88 out of John Mackey Marvin Harrison Alan Page? I mean he will be a HOF'er but do still think he was the best over the other two?

Picking right now today, as much as I love Marvin and the Orange of SU, I still have to go John Mackey.

What do all you YARDBARKERS SAY? Speak up now... Help us out here. WJ, has a valed pick here what's the yard say and back up your pick now....
        • squish059
what about HOF WR Michael Irvin? 3 SBs.... his name has to be in there with the 88s
        • TheDean1
I don't think he's the BEST EVER to wear the #88, not over the other 3, but he's on there.
    • htkrocks
Marvin Harrison and not just because I went to middle school with him and know his sister well. In a time where #1 WRs are looked at for there size and flamboyance, Harrison is barely 6'0" and 175lbs yet is quietly on his way to retiring #2 behind Rice in just about every receiving category. He also has a ring to go with his stats.
      • TheDean1
htkrocks....I agree with you. Marvin has always been a private and quiet person. He always let his actions speak for themselves. I haven't looked as of yet, but just how far behind Rice is he, in the more key stats?

        Great post and back-up, thanks
  • bzr034
Barry Sanders was the best to wear #20. And where is Cris Carter on #80? It's still a tough call between Carter and Rice, but I'd have to say those two are the best at the number. And, I know I'm going to take flack for this, but I think Jerome Bettis should be at #36. I'm sorry, Eagles fans. Please don't hate me...

    • rhcp879
nope, you are right about Jerome Bettis, maybe one day B-West can take that spot, but i twill be hard for him 2 keep these #'s up.
      • TheDean1
So, rhcp, do you say, on the record, Bettis over Westbrook right now today is the BEST EVER to WEAR #36?

        • squish059
no way.... Westbrook is better in every single way than Bettis. Bettis got yards cuz he carried 100 times a game for a run happy Steelers Off. He was a freakin lineman with speed at best.
        • TheDean1
Squish, I don't know if you realize it or not but you just make points to have Bettis there. Work Horse, Big, and speed for his size. and better in every way? You may want to recheck that statement.
        • rhcp879
yup, Bettis over Westbrook, as of today.
        • squish059
he wasn't terrible.... ask bettis to make a catch out of the backfield....?
bettis had no moves.... he lowered his head and went straigh until he found the ground. westbrook is like a figured skater out there dancing around defenders and he has solid power.
I know statistically bettis has plenty of yards for a career but i watched him play every damn game and never once was i impressed.
if you compare stats, then the argument can't be made, but if you had to choose a RB to build a team around today and they were both rookies who would you pick....? honestly its not really that hard to get a find a glorified FB to pound the ball play after play.....
look at the avg yds per carry...Bettis has a significantly lower avg but 5 times had 300+ carries for a season, if Westbrook had those carries then he would be setting rushing records...
        • TheDean1
Squish059... to address your comments in your post # 8.1.1.4.
First of all, Westbrook, as good as he is, would make it carrying the rock 300+ times a year. He is to injury prone for that, however, he is smart enough to move around and not take those head on hits as much and learned to catch the ball at an early age and its that combo that makes, Brian Westbrook special. But he does get nicked up, a lot, as for an around RB he is far better. The schemes they play(ed) in suit their assets and the teams play books.

By the way, if you have me blocked, why do you keep coming in to post? Don't get me wrong, I don't mind, but why play both sides of the fence?
        • squish059
if i had you blocked you wouldn't be able to reply to any (all) of my comments... de de dee.

you have some kinda prob with me and thats too bad for you....
I offer my opinion and you seem to think yours is "better" therefore mine is discredited.... get over yourself

furthermore, just because you think Westbrook can't handle that many carries does not make it true, i'm very sure if he weren't catching 90 passes he could handle 90 more carries.... bringing his 2007 total touches toooo.... 368? yeah he cant hadle 300 plus.( please excuse his versatility, the reason he doesn't have more carries)..... the most touches Bettis had in any year was 390.... in comparison Westbrook had more yards and more TDs..... therefore more efficient(or effective) when he touches the ball...... thank you come again

      • TheDean1
Potter... My bad, Betts wore #46 not #45.

mike webster over ray lewis? really? and how is charlie joiner a "coin flip" choice against manning? and obviously jerry rice is beyond any competition.
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • TheDean1
Webster has 4 rings and has been vote by all his peers to be the best center to ever play the position. His peers, not the media or fans, but by the people who played against him. Ray lewis has been said by his peers to be a great LB, but the BEST? I don't think as great as Lewis was/is that I'd go as far as calling him the best LB in history, which is a tag Mike Webster has been given by players, coaches, and even fellow centers from all eras so far.

The only Center in the NFL to ever play the position was Dwight Stephenson (Dolphins) 1980-87, and he even said, Mike Webster is the best center to ever play the game, and Stephenson made the ALL CENTURY TEAM. the SLEEVELESS WONDER. May he rest in peace.

As for Joiner, he was a great when passing wasn't the biggest part of the game like it is today, however he was on a pass happy team for years. But Manning has and arm like a laser, is in my option the BEST STUDY of the game and he calls his own plays during the game which isn't done on very many teams these days, so that why I pick Manning, but also, between the two, that's why I said coin flip. In their primes, I'd take either one on my team.

As for Rice, I think we both agree, for #80 the BEST to EVER wear the number.

Thanks for your post, points and job well done.
  • bzr034
I found a #45. Emlen Tunnell played DB for the Giants and Packers in the 50s. In the Hall of Fame as of 1967. Sounds like a winner to me. Thank you, internet.

Bzr034, GREAT JOB, I have to admit though, never thought of him, yet alone for the #45. We'll add him and I'll look into him and career. WOW, Emlen Tunnell, and a HOF'er. Good call BZR034.

      What do you think BARKERS?
  • DreadsSwayin
whoa whoa whoa....no deion at 21? his primetime! the best shutdown corner ever! (and maybe the faster). I respect LT to the fullest but come on.....its primetime.

      defly Deion
      • TheDean1
Squish059........please see 13.2 post RE: Deion Sanders and why he's not up for the BEST to Wear #21 over LT2.
    • TheDean1
I agree PRIMETIME was the best and most feared shutdown corner and don't forget in his time, also return man.
But the guy wouldn't and didn't want to TACKLE ANYONE. Sorry as great as he was, I'd take LT2 over Deion.

that is why I wouldn't count PRIMETIME as the BEST to EVER wear #21, not over LT. Now I would say he wore the BEST NUMBER if he wore #45, look at some of our posts here and you'll see why, LOL. But sorry, I can't at #21.

Good post though and he was great at what he did, just wish he wasn't so afraid to tackle.
      • squish059
primetime also lined up at WR and was listed as #5 QB for th Cowboys.... the model of what speed and agility can do for an athlete..... not even mentioning his baseball career.....
LT is great..... but if Westbrook can't be the best at 36 because of his lack of years then LT can't be #21 for that reason also.

i'm seeing a trend, in your opinion a stronger player is better than a faster player...

every time i offer my opinion you try to cut me down and assume yours is that only one that can be "true".... not sure i wanna bother joining the conversation anymore???
        • squish059
since when does knowing Deion is the best ever warrant and explanation? are you serious.... if you don't how great he is i'm not gonna waste time copying and pasting a bunch of stats like you do. In ur opinion LT is best.... and who can argue with that? he'll probably retire as the best RB ever hands down...... Deion is ALREADY the best CB ever without a doubt as well as one of the best pure athletes to play and sport...... I think we all know that a 4 page report is not needed to explain why Primetime belongs at least as an honorable mention if not a tie(i'm sure you've heard of this concept).... he being listed as a backup QB only shows more of his versatility

its a great article, I love it.... wouldn't be blogging otherwise.... i disagree with 2 out of 100 and you can't accept my opinion.... its sad. Then try to tell me I need more concrete evidence showing an argument... dude we both know enough about sports that I dont need to go and list the career stats of every player i mention.....

as for best coach ever I'm gonna have to think of that a bit.... it really comes down to what type of coach you're looking for.... and what your team needs... longevity, rebuilding, tough love, etc.

love blogging with ya, Rock on!
        • TheDean1
We don't disagree with Westbrook nor Deion, but I can't add Deion to the List it's to late unless I repost it. I do think he should be considered and I missed him and yes I do think LT2 is the best to wear the #21, as for Westbrook I do have him over Bettis. As you said, it really comes down to what type of________ you're looking for.... and what your team needs... longevity, rebuilding, tough love, etc. was my point when we started on the Westbrook and Bettis debate, you just said it better, to shay.

As for your accepting your opinions, 'cmon, if I didn't why would I spend the time ruffling an Eagles feathers? LOL.

Here's one for ya, Why in the hell can't Marty Schottenhymer win the BIG one? The man can coach, and he's proven that with lesser talented teams and th man can win regular season games but I'll be damed if he can get to the second round or better. What are your thoughts on the one?

          Cheers for now.
        • TheDean1
squish059...It's called an opinion, your never going to agree on everything, Please do speak your mind, its all good. Its not that I disagree with your choices or picks, its just some of the reasoning is all, and like you, its just an opinion. Of course it's my opinion, LOL, I did do the list, so my opinion is in the end product. Why don't you do yours and see what happens. At least I put it on the line in print for all to see and didn't just dance around a few numbers. This was a long and tough project believe you me. A lot of thought and study went into this list and I feel that as a whole it is a pretty good list and there will be a few on it that fans will question and thats okay, that is what this is all about.

That said, if you look at the list I do have Westbrook over Bettis. As for Deion, he was a great cover corner, however, really what's the #5 QB have to do with anything? There are teams that have the same thing, they just don't list them. All that aside, LT2 today, I feel is the BEST EVER to wear #21, he's not the flashiest, although he is pretty quick, LOL, no one was as flashy as PRIMETIME. LT2, holds the records in the NFL that won't be broke for awhile, short of a championship ring, he will, in my opinion go down in history as ONE of the BEST BACKS to EVER play the POSITION of RB. Can we agree on that?

As for your cutting you down, by no means am I doing that, we just don't see it the same way on some issues. A good example would be like, The Tuna, not everyone likes his ways or opinions but he does what he does and it is his way of doing what he does best. Here's one for you... It's like putting this out there as a question,

Who do you think is the BEST Coach EVER out of this list...

          Shula
          The Tuna
          Chuck Noll
          Lombardi
          Landry
          Gibbs

Well you may comeback with an answer and reason and also support your reason, however, there are going to be people out there thinking your full of crap no matter who you pick, others will pick some else on the list or not even on the list, and they to will give their reasons and support those reasons, then there are those who will come up with some someone like, Al Davis, when coached the Raiders. Just remember this my friend, I don't what anyone tells you, this is a FACT..."You can NEVER fail an opinion test. Please do speak your mind, its all good.

Great post, come on back if you'd like, you and ANYONE else in the YARD are always WELCOME.

Larry Centers was a better FB
      • TheDean1
Squish059... Larry Centers was a very good full back too. Why do you always just say this guy is better, but give no support as to why you feel that way, and this is about who wears the # the BEST not the BEST player. Neal wore #41 and could be a good argument over Newman. Centers wore #31 and in no way shape or form can you say that Centers wore #31 better than Jim Taylor.

FYI In his 14 NFL seasons, Centers rushed for 2,188 yards, caught 827 passes for 6,797 yards, returned 5 punts for 30 yards, returned 33 kickoffs for 617 yards. and scored 42 touchdowns (14 rushing/28 receiving).

Centers 826 receptions are currently the most by any non-wide receiver in NFL history. Because NFL fullbacks are now almost exclusively used as blockers, Centers may be remembered as the greatest pass receiving fullback, if not running backs in general, ever, and one of the last to be used as a ball carrier.

        * 3x Pro Bowl selection (1995, 1996, 2001)
        * All-Pro selection (1996)
        * Super Bowl champion (XXXVIII)
        Receptions 827
        Receiving Yards 6,797
        Total Touchdowns 42

Prior to playing for the Chargers, Neal has had stints with the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, and Cincinnati Bengals. Neal is also currently the NFL's highest paid fullback gaining a three year extension after becoming a free agent in 2007, which was worth 5.1 million dollars.

Neal is best known as an exceptional blocking fullback, and has lead blocked for 1000 yard rushers in 11 straight seasons (Adrian Murrell in 1997, Warrick Dunn in 1998, Eddie George in 1999-2000, Corey Dillon from 2001-2002, and LaDainian Tomlinson from 2003 to 2007.)

On February 28, 2008 Neal was released by San Diego because of Norv Turner's new offense and also
        * 4x Pro Bowl selection (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007)
        * 3x All-Pro selection (2005, 2006, 2007)

So when it comes to FB your team scheme plays a big part of it. Stats wise Centers was by far the better FB. As for a blocking FB, Centers couldn't carry Lorenzo Neal's jock. Again, all this depends on the Off. Coor./Head Coach and their schemes that makes or breaks a FB and in some cases, their career.

Centers was a multi propose FB and great at it, however, in a featured blocking back scheme and all you want is a blocker, hands down Neal would be my pick. All that aside, can you imagine being able to say you have or were a lead blocker for 11 straight seasons and your starting RB's all rushed for over 1000 yards. I'd have to say, if I was a coach or coordinator I'd want him.

        Thanks for the post.
        • squish059
haha.... he said Neal was the best FB he has seen... and i suggested Centers.... just my opinion..... I think the Moose was better also.
wasn't even talkin bout numbers just saying there have been some damn good FBs in the game....Neal is one of them but not quite the best.... again thats simply my opinion without even checkin any stats
        • squish059
btw your reply was 99% verbatim off wikipedia

          thanks for the "post"
        • squish059
in 1994, Larry rushed for 336 yds 5TDs caught 77 passes for 647 yds and 2TDs, in 1995 Centers caught 101 passes for 963 yards... rushed for 254 yards and 4 TDs...in 1996, 99 receptions for 766 yards and 7 touchdowns, while also gaining a career high 425 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.....
in just these 3 seasons he eclipsed every stat Neal has....easily, as well as blocking for 1000 yd rushers throughout his career..... there is not even an argument here, surprised you're even trying..
Centers is not better than Taylor... never said that
      • TheDean1
Squish... Neal for a BLOCKING BACK, is the BEST I have ever SEEN. And based on the MONEY he got for his contracts to JUST BLOCK, the NFL agree with me too. Now as for the BEST OVERALL FB EVER, hell no I don't Neal's the best. And I think you and I may even agree on who the best ever WAS.

As for the stats put of THAT POST you were replying to from wikipedia, it was from there and damn it, it should have been 100%, what did I miss, LOL...

AS for arguments over your FB thing, there's no arguement, and STAT wise Centers was a great FB. MY point was and still is, AS A BLOCKING FB, NEAL WAS THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN., LOL... Centers did everything you'd ask of a running back not a fullback and his stats prove that fact, I agree with you there so why are you so upset?

        Great posts

        • squish059
Neal is great.... how do you feel about Daryl "the moose" Johnston? He seems to be the best of both worlds he put up respectable numbers and must have been a fine blocker given Emmitt Smith's career yards were padded behind him( and maybe an all time great line)
I guess with some (most) positions it comes down to what your team scheme is built around.... Center would more than thrive in a good west coast Off.. and Neal could make a running game thrive anywhere...
i'm wondering does LT get credit for being great although having had a great FB.... or does Neal get credit for being great for having a great RB?
        • TheDean1
MOOSe is a an Alum, I'm basis. Although I think Emmitts line was more of an impact on his #'s. Now a good match-up would be moose and centers. I agree centers would thrive in a west coast scheme. As for LT2 or any back for that matter I think is better off when they have that extra body blocking in front of them and leading them to a hole, remember neal blocked for several back on several teams and they all had success, so I think that speaks for itself not to mention he was the highest paid fullback in the league and for teams to pay that kind of money these days for just a blocker( per say since he really didn't carry that much nor catch the ball out of the back field, although he did have more TD's rec than rushing,) is amazing and says volumes, don't you think?

For your LT2 credit for being great comment, we'll see, won't we.
        • squish059
how bout this.... with a back like Westbrook you'd rather have Neal as FB... but with a back like Bettis you'd rather have Centers at FB..... funny turnabout

        • TheDean1
Squish059....That is 100% where I was coming from. BINGO! Don't you think both would very good back fields?
        • squish059
absolutely.... depending on what type of team you have they would both be great combos
        • TheDean1
At last, just for kicks...out of the guys we've spoke of so far, if you could pick your dream back field (QB, FB, RB) lets make this fun, 1 for a running team and one for a passing team, who would you pick if you were the coach of the team?
    • TheDean1
      DreadsSwayin, very good post...
Joe Green is Mean Joe Green of the Pittsburgh Steelers and has 4 SB Rings, great teams for Pitts in the 70's. He was a Line coach in the NFL, he still maybe, however he was with the dolphins, and since the TUNA came to town I don't know if he's still there I'd have to check. Jonathon Ogden, great player, a HOF player, I think he'll make 1st ballot. Your right, he should be on the list, however, I still think Decon Jones was the Best to wear #75. If sack records were kept back then he'dave the record for most sacks in a season, career and maybe even game. He was great against the run and O-lineman hated and, YES, FEARED him. I still wonder what a team would have been like with Decon Jones and Dick Butkus, whewwww, Dangerous, they both had the same attitude both on and off the field. Great guys and friends off the field, but on the field, including practices, everyone on the opposing team had a target on their back and jones and butkus were the bullets and teams knew that, but couldn't do anything about it. Again, whewwww.

Lorenzo Neal was a great full back, he blocked like a tank and opened damn good holes for the RB's to see and get through.
    • TheDean1
Sorry DreadsSwayin, as for Randy Moss, you have a good case if he does, he's worn 3 #'s now, 84, 18, 81, he has been quoted that 18 is his favorite number. Knowing randy, he just may suprise everyone by going into the hall of fame as #18 just tick people off, LOL.
      • DreadsSwayin
okay u answered all my questions except...PRIMETIME, tell me your thoughts on him not being at 21 over LT?

    2 things:
    1) I've got to take my man Steve Young over Troy Aikman. I think Aikman is overrated because the offense around him was so good, specifically the offensive line. Aikman was had all the time in the world and was hardly ever touched. Emmit Smith was one of the best backs in the game and ran through gaping holes, setting up an easy passing game.

    2) Merriman shouldn't be mentioned next to LT.

Athlete Number 67 - Bob Kuechenberg

The story of the best athlete to wear the jersey number 67 is an interesting one. Bob Kuechenberg was drafted out of Notre Dame by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 1969 NFL draft. He was subsequently cut by the Eagles and picked up by the Atlanta Falcons whereby he was immediately released. After working as a salesman for a period of time, Kuechenberg was picked up as a free agent by the Miami Dolphins. He went on to play fourteen seasons as a guard with the Miami Dolphins, being named to six Pro Bowls.

Kuechenberg was a part of the Dolphins championship teams in Super Bowls VII and VIII. Bob was extremely durable as an NFL lineman, with consecutive start streaks of 53, 42 and 49 games. He also fractured his back in August of 1977 and was still able to come back as a starter that season after missing only two regular season games.

Did you know.....that only Dan Marino has played in more Dolphins games than Bob Kuechenberg?

the site i went to only rates nfl players #1 - #50 something so your list is more complete... nice post!

  • htkrocks
I have to go with Deon Sanders as the best to where #21 currently, nothing against LT. I agree with pretty much every other number though.
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • TheDean1
htkrocks... Deion seems to be the pick at #21. You know, tell me this, since I put Jim "The Legend" Thorpe at #1, he wore #'s 1, 3, and 21. This is just me playing here, but do you think, I should have put him at all 3 #'s, I don't, but just a question.

When I showed the list around for the groups opinion before posting it, I asked this question...Which one of the three following lists would make for a stronger and more accreate list... These were my 3 choices for them.

      List #3
      At #1 Warren Moon
      At #3 Bronko Nagurski and
      At #21 Jim Thorpe
But we didn't think Moon was better than Thorpe, Nagurski had to be on the list, and if we put Thorpe at #21 what about Deion and LT2. Any by avoiding the Deion, LT2 issue by putting Jim Thorpe at #21, was the wimps way out of doing the right thing, but would it make for a stronger list? That was the $64,000 question I had.

      List #2

      At #1 Warren Moon
      At #3 Jim Thorpe
      At #21 Deion Sanders
Should Bronko Nagurski be completely off the list to add Deion at #21? Would that make for a stronger more accurate list?

      List #1
      At #1 Jim Thorpe
      At #3 Bronko Nagurski and
      At #21 LT2
This list won on our poll by 17 votes over list #3, As a team here we felt that Thorpe and Nagurski had to be on the final list and more people thought LT2 over Deion would make for a stronger more accurate list so we went with that one for print. However, the YARD likes Deion better so it seems.

Our next tough spots were #'s 45 and 67. We just couldn't come up with any real SOLID PICKS other than what you see. Do you or the YARD have any for those 2 #'s? Honestly, we thought that those 2 #'s would be the biggest issue in the YARD vs the #21 pick, funny how things turned out.

Great post and thank for coming in to comment.

Bronko, please read post #24.1 and you'll see what our issues were. It came down to LT2 and Deion and where we put Jim Thorpe (Who wore #'s 1, 3, & 21). The YARD is with you on the #21 pick.

hey uh no worries man, philly fans dont bite west is probably higher only cus he never faked an injury, but bettis was definitely a legend, and well Art Monk should be no. 1, love 88, and Barry is a tie with Brian, and well i dont want to be want to be one of those old days kind of guy, but the entire steel curtain ought to get recognition, i think 67 was Dwight White, and uh 45 sounds like Herm Edwards lol

    • TheDean1
hey dawks, those steel curtain days were great weren't they? thanks for the input on your pick ideas for #'s 45 & 67. You made think back and I'd say Herm is a better coach than a player and I wonder what Dwight is up to these days, I haven't followed up on him in years, do you know? I know Wester died and Holmes just died a little while ago. The Webster story after he left the game is a sad one too. He was a great guy.

    • TheDean1
Again in the YARD these are what I feel are the BEST to EVER wear the #, so some the players today are great, but can we really put them all over the players from the past. Stats in the olds, well some of the stats kept today weren't even kept in the day. A good example, SACKS. If they kept that stat since the beginning of the game, I think the DEACON, would hold the record. Its sometimes more than just stats.

This was a hard list to put out there, but I did just that, put it out there. I want to thank all of you YARDBARKERS for your comments and I hope that by the beginning of the season together we can come up with a list that we can all be proud to call our own.
      • well could you put his name up there just cuz :)

You are dead on here too, we thought about taking the easy way out and putting him there and Moss at 81 or 18, but then you would be putting him up at #81 with night train and TO, and I would pick night train, and at #18 he would have been up with Payton and I'd take Payton over Moss. So I feel Moss should be on the list too as should Sharpe, but I felt with Sharpe on Moss would have been off the list if we put him at #18 or #81. So as you can see we went with not putting Sharpe on the list vs not putting moss on the list.

      What do you guys think?

Annt74, a lot of great guys wore #12, Kelly, was also one of them.
Ernie Davis never played after he got drafted, what a back field that would have been with him and Jim Brown. He's the only Heisman trophy winner for Syracuse Univ. and to think Jim Brown played there too and didn't win it. Believe it or not Jim Browns best sport wasn't football, it was Lacrosse. Ernie also played his High School ball about 20 minutes from me, in the Elmira, ny area. Great kid, life cut way short to soon.

As for Klecko, liked him too but I didn't consider him for the list though at #73, good pick.

      Good post Annt...

You know i like your #91 pick, #14 is a tough one, Hutson was GREAT, I like that pick too but hard one with YA. I am a HUGH 70's Steelers fan, but I disagree with your #68 pick, as for #36, I think they both go to the hall when its said and done, however, Bus has a ring and WESTBROOK doesn't yet, and with some life still in him he just might surpass Buses #'s on the ground, so tough one for me, Pace, GREAT OL man, hall for sure.

Now Haley, those 5SB rings is very amazing and over WARE right now I'd have to agree, Bruce Matthews is also a very good pick, But I'd still take Olsen.

Not doubting this pick at #46, by why do you say Edwards?

Overall very impressive picks, GREAT job...
      • Edwards was better then betts
        • Betts don't even start half the time
        • Lou Groza get's 46 he wore it before becoming 76 he gets 76 as well... he was voted my ESPN as being the best athlete to ever wear 76
  • LC Greenwood is 68 not 8 oh yea Roger staughbach is better than jim kelly with 12

good pick Pink, but I find it hard to pick him over a HOF guy and a guy that they give out an award named after him.

      you what I mean?

now I disagree here, Moss is great in his own right, however Night Train is in the Hall and I don't know how old you are, but you might want to look him up. Randy could be a 18 or 81, but at this moment in time I think he misses out on both.
