Open Letter to Donovan McNabb...
Dear 5, I'm gonna try to do this without coming off as corny as possible. But I'm actually writing an open letter on a website to a premier athlete, so I realize the irony. But regardless, as a DIE-HARD Eagles fan who just witnessed another division foe add another Lombardi to their trophy case, I feel the need to express the thoughts and feelings of my fellow disheartened brethren everywhere. Well, that and I can't sleep. There isn't even a debate that you are the greatest QB this city has ever seen. Some people may not believe that the fans of this team agree with that sentiment. But the fact remains that we are the ones who actually made that proclamation this year when we voted you in for the 75th anniversary team. There's always gonna be haters, no matter where you go. But they will never outnumber the true fans of this team. Before your arrival, we were perennial basement dwellers. Our annual motto contained something along the lines of "Wildcard or bust"....and we'd even fail to achieve that. Now, missing the playoffs is a shock. It's damn near impossible to disagree that your arrival and tenure is what raised this city's expectations and gave birth to its yearly legitimate championship hopes. With all that being said, I'm just a regular-ass dude. I don't have a clue as to what's on your brain when it comes to this organization and to this city's fanbase. I don't have any inside info nor do I have the opportunity to ask you personal questions "off the record" like Pam Oliver can. All I can do is give you the true perspective of a typical Eagles fan. Being born into "the family" 24 years ago, and still waiting on that first championship, I feel I've earned the right to speak for Philly fans alike, or at least the majority of them. I speak to Philly fans everyday. I interact with Philly fans on the internet everyday. And I'm completely confident that any fan who reads this article will agree whole-heartedly. You're our guy. And you will be until the day that you no longer represent this team. We'll never question your commitment and loyalty to this team or to us, no matter what any sideline reporters have to say. We understand you're human and take a lot of heat from the local and national media. We understand the overwhelming number of times you've been counted out and written off. Because we've been here defending you. Needless to say, the New York Giants just won their 3rd Superbowl. We're still waiting on our first. Anxiety and impatience can definitely get the best of us at times, but it certainly isn't our identity. Our identity is our unquestionable fidelity and desire to see our team succeed. And when you go from the 3-13 and the 5-11 seasons to the 12-4 and 13-3 seasons, you don't tend to forget who got you there. We know you're our guy, and we know you can take us where we want to go. Whether you read this or not, I felt the need to reinforce the FACT that the vast majority of this city and this fanbase is behind you through it all. Every night, in every city in America, there is an Eagles fan somewhere defending your name and defending this team with all they've got. And it's not gonna change anytime soon. So 5, please understand right now, that we got your back and we look forward to you barking out the signals and marching us down the field again in 2008. Andy Reid hit it perfectly with this quote: "He has been doing it for 9 years and just keeps playing. You're never going to make everyone happy. I think 90 percent of the people love him to death and 10 percent of them don't". Whether you believe it or not, this is the truth. We say this year after year, but if we didn't say it again, we'd be lying to our hearts. McNabb and the Eagles in '08! See you in Tampa! E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone seems to do it - starting with Angelo in the morning - easily within a couple of minutes he's bashing away despite Hugh Douglas trying to inject an adult point.
In the afternoon, there's that nut job on WPEN who keeps screaming how Five runs his stats up against weak teams. He doesn't seem to grasp that good teams are suppose to beat weak teams and that's an indicator of a weak team - that a better team scores a lot against them!
Jody Mac does about the best job of them all - even then he gets the wacko callers who want to start Cobb instead of a top five QB. Geez.
After last years first pick of the draft, not one talk show host was screaming about how management got 5 no help, essentially saying that we were good enough as we were.
The media. What a joke.

This article is written to Donovan McNabb, but it is open because I wanted every eagles fan on this website to echo my statements to prove to him it's not just some random dude's thoughts. It really is what the majority of Philly thinks.
Trading McNabb is not in the cards if this team is going to get over the hump any time soon. And I'm pretty sure the FO understands this. I just wanted to be sure McNabb understands that this is the way we feel.

Trust me the effort is there. It's been my life's ambition to win a championship at this level. In 1999, when Coach Reid and I first got together, we each envisioned what it would be like to win a Super Bowl for Philadelphia. We still share that dream of seeing it become a reality.
It all starts with winning the NFC East. We have to get back on top of the division. Congratulations go to the Giants for their Super Bowl win but that was for the 2007 season. As we get ready for 2008, we have a fresh start. We must find a way to be better than the Giants, the Cowboys and the Redskins.
So "J," thanks again for the kind words and support. Please keep the faith in me and the Eagles!

you seemed to play well with todd pinkston, james thrash, and greg lewis back in '03, '02 and '01. i wouldn't call these guys playmakers. the recievers we have now are a lot better, so why isn't our offense succeeding as much as it did back in those years?
you have probably been asked these questions millions of times, but hopefully you read this. maybe you can get another perspective of how eagles fans feel.

Get your facts straight, idiot. This kind of ignorant comment is exactly how rumors get out of control in this media saturated age. It has not been reported anywhere that the Philadelphia Eagles Organization is thinking about trading McNabb. It HAS been reported that the Baltimore Ravens are making a play for a trade offer to Philly.
Think about what you are saying. That's all.

You can laugh if you want to folks, but Philly has the best quarterback in the league. Can you imagine what the Eagles would look like if McNabb didn't have to run for his life on every play and if he had one or two star receivers? Oh yeah, you do know. When that happens, we win the division or go to the Big Bowl. Who in their right mind would believe that Eli or Romo is better. An argument can be made for Brady, but who's fool enough to believe that if you planted Brady amid the Eagles team and McNabb amid the Patriots that No. 5 wouldn't have a few SB's under his belt? If you want some serious info on how great McNabb is, click on the Yardbarker blogs posted by Phillyphan. He's got his McNabb's stats down pat -- and they're irrefutable!

i would like to see a lombardi trophy!!!
yes i did watch the game and watch eli march the giants down the field in the final seconds and win against a far better patriots team than we faced in sb 39!!! guess you missed that part of the game though????
so i have facts to back my conclusions!!!!
jheisey replied February 12, 2008
2) "The pass into the middle of the field" was actually right into LJ Smith, our tight end's hands, and THEN into Rodney Harrison's hands. So really, it should have been caught. Get it right.
3) The most notable difference between the Giants Superbowl and our Superbowl was the play of the offensive and Defensive lines. Go back and rewatch our game again. If you open your eyes you'll notice that Donovan McNabb was running for his life for the entire game. Contrary to what you may believe, it's not too easy to run an offense when you're on your back every other play. And on top of that, Brady had all day to pick us apart. If you're going to put the Giants win on Eli and our loss on McNabb, you need to study the game of football a little more.
4) Eli Manning "marched his team down the field in the final seconds". Let me just Iemind you that if it wasn't for Asante Samuel and Brandon Meriweather's inability to catch a football, you wouldn't even be mentioning his name in the same breath as McNabb's. Eli's poor passes were dropped by the defense, McNabb's weren't. Think about that for a minute. Another thing: Can you imagine Greg Lewis, or ANYONE on our team for that matter, making the same catch that David Tyree did? No, you can't.
And finally 5) The patriots certainly are a far better offense than we faced in SB 39. But their DEFENSE is worse. They have almost the exact same roster defensively, except all the over-the-hill guys that barely made it through this year were 3 years younger.
And as a matter of fact, yeah I am pretty happy with the NFC Championship trophy. I'm a fan of the team. Would I rather have a Lombardi trophy? Sure, but to get a Lombardi trophy you have to win the Halas Trophy. I'm not gonna ignore my team's accomplishments just because they haven't won a Super Bowl yet. It seems to me that you fall into the category of the far too impatient fan, which you have a right to be, but complaining about it and saying things like "I would like to see a lombardi trophy!!!!!" do nothing but make you look bitter and annoying. You aren't the only person going through this.
To give you an idea: There are 15 (YES fifteen) teams in the NFL that have yet to win a Super Bowl. We aren't alone. So stop crying like a baby, stick by your team and realize that they are suffering through it just like you are. If you can't take it then go sign up for one of the 17 other teams that have won it before.
willardj
replied February 12, 2008
i guess the fact that the eagles have one of the oldest franchises and have been around for all superbowls unlike the other 14 teams who are mostly relatively new to the nfl.
david tyree had no catches in the regular season. the catch wasn't skill. it was luck, he caught it on his helmet.
if you were actually satisfied by an nfc championship trophy, that just shows that you you aren't the kind of die-hard fan that you say you are. it also shows that you became a fan probably recently during mcnabb's good years. if you have been a fan for over twenty years, believe me you become impatient.
i read your letter. i guess you made it positive-sounding enough for mcnabb to respond to it. unfortunatly, mcnabb won't respond to any that criticize him in any way...
jheisey replied February 12, 2008
2) Point me to where I said I was "SATISFIED" with an NFC Championship. YOU CAN'T. I said I was happy about it. Are you going to tell me that as an eagles fan you aren't happy your team won an NFC Championship?
3)So if David Tyree's catch was "luck" as you call it, then how does that make Eli a better QB than McNabb if he has to rely on LUCK???? That's all I'm saying. Don't crown Eli as this great QB and dog on McNabb after saying the most pivotal play in Eli's SB game was LUCK. Don't you see how stupid that is?
4) I have been a fan since the day I was born. I haven't witnessed one of my favorite teams win a single championship in my entire life. Not one. If anybody should be impatient it should be me. But my point was that crying about it and complaining does nothing but bring pointless negativity towards the team and to the fanbase. We're all in it together: The players, coaches, and fans. When I wrote this letter, I spoke up for the people that have been through it all and know how close we have come since the McNabb era began. I spoke for the people that understand we have the best chance with him at QB. I never once acquitted McNabb of any of his faults. But I'm not stupid enough to put all of the blame on one person or one unit. Football is the most team-oriented game in the world. If you can't understand that, then i guess it makes sense to blame McNabb and assume that once he's gone all will be right in the organization. Open your eyes and think logically.
I'm not gonna keep arguing back and forth. It's clear that I was right with what I said in my letter when you look at all the responses. So you can jump to conclusions and formulate an opinion about me all you want. I know who I am and I know who I spoke for. And way more people agreed with me than disagreed with me. So that's all that really matters.
willardj
replied February 12, 2008
obviously people will agree with you because most people log onto this site to support their athletes not criticize them. all that really matters is what matters this offseason and what the eagles decide to do with mcnabb. the eagles will definitely get offers, i think they probably have, there is no denying that. because reid will be making the decision mcnabb will most likely stay another year, unless they get an offer they can't refuse, such as a couple of first round draft picks and/or a veteran player; if they ever get offered this deal i guarantee we accept it (in the trenton times it says we have been looking for offers for mcnabb and this is what we were looking for). the odds we are offered this, are close to none.
if donovan starts next year, you as will many other fans will be disappointed. if you don't want a back and forth argument then dont respond to this post.
by the way, you can't claim that all these responses reflect the majority of eagles fans. the eagles fans i know and go to the games with have very different opinions. like i said earlier, only the fans who want to support their athletes write here which begs the question, why am i still here?

If Donovan McNabb isn't a member of the Philadelphia Eagles next year, its because the organization has decided it's time to rebuild and because they don't value a Super Bowl in the immediate future. In which case, you as a fan should be pissed because that means more waiting, and more wasting of the best Running Back this franchise has ever seen in Brian Westbrook.
With all that being said, I am completely convinced that Donovan McNabb will be back in Eagles green next year. Especially with the franchising of LJ Smith.

hes saying mcnabb wasn't able to win a superbowl against a much weaker offense our defense was just as good as new englands but our offense was much better. the pats had recievers like deion branch, david givens, and reche caldwell, all who aren't even on the team any more. mcnabb had a much better offensive line a better running back and better recievers. the key statistic in this game was three interceptions by mcnabb. we were the better team going in, just as well coached, and yet we still lose. i agree, mcnabb has had a great career but after 4 legitimate superbowl chances (3 nfc champ appearances), we weren't able to bring any home. now that mcnabb is declining with not as good of an offense or defense, what makes you think he can win the superbowl now?

Thank you for ruining your own argument. Does McNabb play Defensive End too? Or maybe he goes back and plays Corner once in a while. You've got a great point....I mean why couldn't McNabb take care of that much weaker offense on the other side of the ball? You aren't even making sense!!!!
He put up more points than Eli did against the same defense that was 3 years younger and 3 years faster. He just didn't have the luxury of the most dominant front 7 in the National Football League.
Dude give up. Your making "the other 10-15%" look more stupid than they already are.
willardj
replied February 19, 2008
in the game of football the object of the game is to score the most points. mcnabb and the eagles offense scored less than tom brady and their offense.
our front seven was just as good if not better. just look at our defensive line, jevon kearse, derrick burgess, corey simon, and darwin walker. that is an all-star line-up. just look at what burgess has done for oakland. we had the top 3 run defense because of players like simon and walker and then jeremiah trotter middle linebacker. dhani jones and mark simoneau were actually good then and are much better than mitchell, antonio pierce, and torbor. the giants defensive playcalling (steve spagnuola) was derived from Jim johnsons blitz happy 4-3. and then our secondary. i mean how more amazing could a secondary get from lito shepphard, sheldon brown, brian dawkins, and michael lewis. this was easily the second best secondary at that time behind denver. if anything the giants defense this year can be looked at as a poor man's 2004 eagles defense. We had 7 pro bowlers that year. our team had all the playoff experience after 3 consecutive nfc champ losses. what more could you ask for from a defense?
unfortunatly games come down to who made the most mistakes and mcnabb led in that category. he had a qb rating of 75 with 3 picks how can you say that he played well? eli manning had a decent game overall but played well when it counted, something i have failed to see mcnabb do.
when you see mcnabb do that, respond, otherwise you have nothing to say.

I have often thought about Eagles who have deserved to win a Championship or Super Bowl, just because of the way they play the game and the energy they bring to the game and fans. Guys like Bill Bergey who always seemed to make a big play when one was needed. Or Wes Hopkins, or Jerome Brown or Chad Lewis or Brian Dawkins or Brian Westbrook, but in the NFL you need a quarterback to get to the plateau. I remember watching the first Super Bowl we were in, I loved Jaworski and Vermeil for getting us there, but I still can't get out of my mind the look in his eyes when he was introduced. He was so sky high that...bang...interception, right out of the box.
With all that being said, I believe you are the guy who will win it for us. With some help (like a #1 W/R, a defensive end who can rush the passer, a punt returner, and maybe another D/B) and good health, this is the year. Eagles 2008-2009 Super Bowl Champs.
