Wow this must have taken a lot of time it's cool that you did this though as some people would have never thought of it

    • thanks, it was hard, especially with some numbers, but it was also a fun list to do.
  • Dewey
Patrick Willis is good (OK, great) but Ray Lewis is the best #52!

Great list. Thanks for sharing this with the Yard.

    • i know, thats one of the onesi had trouble with. i chose willis because he just won the def. rookie of the year, but more importantly because he has so much talent and potential. i'm not taking anything away from lewis.
      • Dewey
What were some of the other tough calls you had to make?
        • #9-Romo, Brees, Palmer
#21-LT and Bob Sanders (the best off. player against maybe the best def. player)
          #39-Willie Parker and Steven Jackson
          #52-Ray and Pat Willis
          #81-T.O. and Moss
          #85-Gates and Ocho Cinco
        • fbkid15
My guess is that 9 would be one of the hardest considering 3 pro bowl quarterbacks wear it in Drew Brees,Romo and Carson Palmer that or 81 with Moss and TO
        • Buyeaisphat
i dont no about willie parker though
        • steve212527
brees nd palmer r better than romo
        • well that one was hard but i figured he has his team contending to win the super bowl. yeah i know he has a lot aroung him but still he has had a great season
    • number1fanof89
      89. Mark Clayton

      52. Ray Lewis
      • steve smith is better than mark clayton.
  • JKing12
willis is on his way up, lewis is on his way down. good choice.

    Oh my god. Nice work!
Definitely not out to debunk your list - but even as a Seahawks fan I feel OK saying that Rodney Harrison deserves that #37 spot. Too bad Mack Strong had a retire...he owned #38 for years!!

Thanks for taking the time to put that together - it was a fun read, and pretty much impossible to disagree with.

    • yeah, i would have had Strong up there, he was really good.
    • gerrykrauss
Rodney Harrison and Merrimen are on drugs, so they can't count. The JUICE is loose baby!!!!

Great Stuff...Next up you should do all time numbers...

    • man, i had a hard time with this list. it would be sweet, i'll see if i can get time to do it.
  • Nice effort.

10 non Hall of Famers ahead of Tom Brady, a lock Hall of Famer. I'm from Philly and like McNabb but Brady has the rings, stats and fewer missed games due to injury.

Someday Reggie Bush will probably be better than Brian Westbrook but not currently.

it's not in order of how good they are...it's by their jersey number..

I'd put Mike Vrabel at #50 and Vince Wilfork at #75. Ogden is a Hall of Famer but if this list is for the best at the position right now I 'd have to go with my boys from the 16-0 Patriots.

    • might have to agree with you on Wilfork, but not on Vrabel. Ernie Sims is flat out beast. He has only played two season and has 259 total tackles. He can also drop into coverage well with his 4.5 speed.
      • Thanks for the Sims props. Us Lion's fans don't get much credit for what we do actually do right.
    • Mobster24
Wilfork def deserves to be at #75
  • Buyeaisphat
i like how u put eli manning at 10 and shaun o'hara at 60 but i think that 13 should be jared lorenzen...but not really

  • Aaron Kampman should be in at #74

awesome list other wise. great job.

    • man, i total missed him. sorry about that. yeah, he's better than mangold. he's the best 74.
      • gerrykrauss
        I agree, Kampman is amazing!!!

very cool but now see if you can do it for best player of all time that has worn that number or better yet the best player to have worn the number through history by idividual team (start with the birds). i know if you do that there will definitly be more birds on that list.

To put my two cents in, the all-time number 51 belongs to Dick Butkus, Chicago Bears middle linebacker from 1965-1973. Butkus was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, and was perhaps the meanest, most ferocious player in the history of the league. Butkus had major knee problems that forced him into retirement (few were sad to seem him go), and played as if he were possessed. It wasn't about money, fame, earrings, hip-hop credibility, or any of the other "look at me" bullshit that you see now. Butkus played because he truly enjoyed punishing people. A true throwback. Nobody else comes close.

Though he never played for a winner, opposing offensive players wet themselves in fear of having to face the evil Butkus, who looked to put every player he hit into the cemetery (according to Deacon Jones, the greatest defensive lineman of all time, IMO).

There. That's out of my system.

  • Kampman # 74 and Hawk #50, consistently is better than Sims.

alot of newer players in the league......it would have been nice to see some more older players repping their number instead of the young guns stealing the spot light
    Sign In/Register to reply
  • ur right about marshawn lynch, but wasn't he injured a lot this season? he is good, dont get me wrong, but i hester just has so much more potential and is much more of a threat but lynch is definitely the next best guy...willis mcgahee aint too shabby either.
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • he was injured a little bit. definately hester is the best though. marshawn is real good though.
  • great list but terrell suggs should be 55

  • Tatupu over Vilma? Fine. (#51)

    • both are real good. i'm actually surprised at myself b/c i didn't pick Vilma b/c players from the U are sweet.
  • GoCowboys
    Cromartie over Roy Williams????

    ARE YOU CRAZY!!!!????

Cromartie is awesome... Don't get that wrong but Roy Williams is One of the best Safeties in the entire league...

    In my mind...

    Good pick with DeMarcus Ware...

What about Ken Hamlin and Marion Barber????

    Moss over T.O.????

    come on...

    Other than that good list...

i would love to see what you have for the all time list...

you better have Emmitt Smith at #22
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • I didn't pick Marion, even though he's a beast, b/c 24 belongs to Champ. You can't find a better football player or athlete than Champ Bailey. I like Owens better and I think Owens is better, but all these stupid Pats fans on here would have gone nuts and its hard to listen to Pats fans a the time. I've heard enough from them. But yeah, T.O. is better. I definately would have Emmitt Smith, he's the all time leader in rushing.
    • gerrykrauss
Horsecollars don't count either, out goes Roy!
  • Cromartie over R. Williams is a great call, Roy Williams is a great hitter but is AWFUL in coverage. he only gets pro bowl nods bc of his reputation or if someone dies. and Matt Light over Osi Umenyoira at #72 is a joke

    #70-"The Man Bear" Logan Mankins!!!!!!!
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • Mankins is good, but not as good as Leonard Davis.
  • Great list. Might change slightly if you still limit it to current players, but include their entire career for consideration. ie: Ed Reed is a phenominal player (#20), but Brian Dawkins has had a better career to this point.
Enjoyed it immensely, though, well done!

I agree with most (that I know) but there has got to be a better #10. He cannot be the best for anything unless you are talking about cry babies.
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • Not really, I looked at every teams roster. The only other notable 10 was Vince Young, but he sucks so I had to choose Manning.
      • DBin805
I dig the list and I respect what you've done here but imho #10 should be Marc Bulger. He is way better than Manning or Young. Granted, Manning got a SB win, but please. Young was great at Texas but what else?
  • General_Zod
    #92 Haynesworth over Strahan?...Arguable.
    Sign In/Register to reply
    • Definately arguable, but i think right now Haynesworth is better.
  • eagleman94
I think you could argue Reed, Ronder Barber and Dawkins for #20. There all older so I think Reed would still win that.

  • #44 Davenport? How about Dallas Clark? Davenport is a backup RB!

  • And 55... I'll take Lance Briggs all day over Brooks. Or as mentioned Suggs. Brooks is on the down side of what was a great career, but it's over.

  • i agree with robbo, briggs is definitely the best 55, although suggs is pretty damn good

If we're talkin all-time Rathman has to get 44 and Okoye 45 :)

  • Boy the fanhood bias on the comments is rediculous.... people need to realize everyone on the cowboys is not the best player in the NFL.
    But Great list

  • Next time consider all NFL teams, ie one of the oldest the Chicago Bears. Numbers 34, 40 and 51 are absolute, undisputably Bears players. For the rest of the NFL fan base I dont need to name them but you can look them up.

  • # 50 Patrick Willis? Willis is 2x as good as Ernie Sims and Willis has been in the league only 2 years
