Under Armour signs UFC champ Georges St-Pierre to multi-year endorsement deal

Sports apparel giant Under Armour today announced it has signed UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre to a multi-year endorsement deal.

St-Pierre will serve as the face of Under Armour's Underwear, one of the company's most popular items, and will be featured in its multi-platform media campaign beginning this holiday season.

St-Pierre is the first MMA fighter to score such a major deal with the company.

Time to drool ladies. However, I wanted this to be more than just about GSP. A deal like this is huge for the whole sport of MMA. As MMA becomes more mainstream and popular, more fighters will be getting deals just as this one. A deal like this is great for the sport.

Thats great news all around! Congrats to GSP!

GSP has been pushing down a lot of mainstream doors the past year. Great on himself, CAA and his management team, because of the fair amount of odds (due to a lingering bad image of mma) stacked against the sport. It may take a while before most mma fighters benefit from the exposure, but it is a step in the right direction nonetheless.

In line with this milestone, i for one am consistently noticing an increase in popularity for the sport. Im randomly encountering more and more people who have marginal to deep knowledge of mma.

The latest occured when i was at the airport over the weekend. I came across a middle aged couple:
man: He should kick his butt for that.
woman: yeah he should, and he knows the mixed martial arts stuff.

Now, yars ago, it might have been "he knows that karate stuff, or that wrestling stuff". The fact that mma was distinguished as a martial art in and of itself, coupled with who the words came out of, show mma is slowing, but surely going mainstream...

He has some talent in his own weight class to fight before he goes jumping up in weight to fight A. Silva. He IS supposed to fight Hardy, and if he wins that he has to fight, IMO, Anthony Johnson. This guy is a beast and I think he is a good match up for GSP. Now, he beats those two then he should be getting ready for Silva. But..., I don't think that fight is going to go how you want it.

Johnson will have his hands full with Kos.
    • klmall
Mitressehc, I dont know if Hardy will actually get the chance..... I know it was implyed however Dana likes to pull fighters for bigger $$$$ opportunites. Johnson oh ya, that guy is a beast at 170 however much like Hardy I just dont think Johnson is quite ready for GSP. Now as far as A.Silva, its been my belief all along that the reason we havent seen much of GSP these past few months is due to him bulking up. There is absolutly no other reason for him to be putting this added muscle on, none. Win or lose, I think it will be one fantastic fight!
    • klmall
Totally agree Canuck.... now that fight should be alot of fun to watch.

I actually think Rumble is gonna whoop koschek. just my humble opinion. Of course in the Octagon anything is possible. But if someone had a gun to my head I'd bet Anthony. Besides shouldn't GSP defend his belt against a couple of real contenders in his weight class which he currently holds the belt? Or go do a "prize" fight against a guy he probably doesn't think he could beat.
    • klmall
Im sorry, real contenders? What in the f*ck do you call Alves, Fitch, Penn, Hughes etc.? And as far as GSP not thinking he can beat A.Silva well I dont agree at all, not even a little bit. Jackson camp are humble fighters, they train hard, they dont boast nor talk sh*t but rather respect ever opponent they face. Sorry but the "real contenders" comment real got me fired up :)

      Sorry for the typo's :(

I meant real contenders as to say two opponents that are ready to fight for the title "right now". I'm not talking about his past fights or the validity of the competition. I fully agree those guys were tough competition. But, we are talking about right now, and those two guys are ready to fight right now. Two real contenders in his weight class, that he has been dominating are challenging him for the belt, and there is speculatiobn that he might fight Silva? I don't think this is a good move for him now, Silva will win. HE needs to give one of these guys a shot. But no klmall I was not trying to take anything away from those other fighters, you just got my point misconstrued.

OMG! Im telling you he's put on more mucsle, can you see it. He is going to fight A.Silva early/mid next year WATCH! Dana will do to Hardy what he did to Velasquez (Carwin/Lesnar). Purity where in the are you?
    • BCswede
In his Q&A session at 105 he said he's put on 10 pounds of muscle since he's been using a nutritionist.(walks around at 195-196 now) My only concern is how will that effect him when it come time to cut.(endurance wise)
    • klmall
Just got a chance to catch that :) Ya he's not going to fight Hardy ..... Why would he be doing this only to have to cut so much weight.....This muscle gain is for A.Silva.
