25 Most Overpaid NBA Players....

This is in no particular order. I put this list together based on what these players are schedule to make in the '08-'09 season and their '07-'08 stats in addition to a few personal observations..... http://hoopshype.com/salaries 25 most overpaid NBA players 1.Samuel Dalembert($10,500,000) He does what he does pretty good, but there are plenty of players of his position willing to do what he does and more for half of what he does. One of those Billy King moves...... 2.Kenny Thomas($7,942,187) Another Billy King special move.....Now he plays 12 min/game averaging 1.4pts and 2.7 rebs/game....WOW!!!! 3.Lamar Odom($14,600,000) Not a bad player, but he's worth about half his salary. He also has a tendency to disappear when Kobe needs him most..... 4.The entire New Knicks roster(current payroll $90,467,471) The highest payroll in the league produced a whopping record of 23-59 last year(151-259 the past 5 years; last above .500 season was '00-'01) 5.Ben Wallace ($14,500,000) When signed by the Bulls he was a high commodity but he has deteriorated into someone worth the veteran's minimum 6.Steve Francis($19,814,480) Highly talented, but spends more time having his contract shopped around then producing on the court. 7.Wally Szcerbiak($13,000,000) Another contract teams try to stay away from. Too injury prone and slow.... 8.Nazr Mohammed ($6,049,400) Gets paid basically to distract opponents from his PF counterpart(Was Tim Duncan, now Emeka Okafor). 9.Larry Hughes ($12,827,676) Not a leader, Not a top notch scorer(only two seasons out of ten leading team in scoring), Not a true PG.....Every time I see this cat, I just see the worst 1st round draft decision the Sixers made in recent memory(This guy was chosen over Paul Pierce!!!...and Dirk Nowitzski!!!) 10.Eric Dampier ($9,550,000) Please explain why this guy's on the same pay scale as Josh Howard when Diop might very well take his spot at starting C. 11.Troy Murphy ($10,126,984) Currently the Pacers highest paid player. Obviously their in transition mode. 12.Tim Thomas ($6,049,400) Very talented, but a prime example of why some players should stay in school and polish their game. 13.Vladimir Radmanovic ($6,049,400) Just check the Finals highlights. The Lakers definitely need a healthy Bynum to succeed because Radmanovic was pretty much worthless. 14.Antoine Walker ($9,320,500) Hasn't been worth more than the minimum since the Celtics traded him in '03. 15.Darko Milicic ($7,000,000) This guy has done NOTHING since he was drafted #2 overall by the Pistons 16.Shawn Marion ($17,000,000) Talented but a lot of money for a 3rd fiddle always shopped around to make room for someone else(First to put Amare at PF, now to make room for Beasley) 17.Dan Gadzuric ($6,246,250) Compared to a lot of players not much, but 3.2 pts and 2.8 rebs/game?? Come on!!! 18.Jason Collins ($6,200,000) Most famous for taking fouls on Shaq in '02 Finals. Hasn't done anything else besides that. 19.Bobby Simmons ($9,920,000) Needs to produce a lot more than 7.6pts and 3.2 rebs/game 20.Rashard Lewis ($17,238,000) The Magic overpaid for someone to be Dwight Howard's sidekick. 21.James Posey (apprx. $8.5 million) Getting paid for his good luck on Eastern Conference Final reps rather than on court production. 22.Reggie Evans ($4.640,000) Anything over the league minimum is overpaying for this cat. 23.Etan Thomas ($6,860,000) To think this cat literally fought Brendan Haywood for the starting C position. 24.Nene ($9,680,000) He'll have plenty of opportunities to earn his money this year, but so far he hasn't produced $2 million worth. 25.Vince Carter ($15,200,000) All money and flash but no heart at all. He sits out when his pinky gets banged up. As a Tarheel fan, he embarasses me!!!

umm...the whole Knicks thats a bit of an overstatement.....Jamal Crawford deserves all the money he gets, as does David Lee, Nate Robinson and Wilson Chandler...Other than that yes for the rest of the scrubs on my pathetic Knicks....

Raef Lafrentz, Adonal Foyle, Dampier...basically all the centers in NBA are overpaid....

I agree, but I couldn't ignore their overall payroll compared to their overall record....
    • you're out of your mind Jamal Crawford is terrible. Strictly offensive minded. No defense at all. If his shot isn't dropping you might as well sit him down. Even if he is hitting it, who ever he's sticking is gonna score more. Believe it! He used to be a Bull, so glad Isiah stuck around long enough to unload him on the Knicks.
  • huh, VC sits out when his pinky gets banged up? he missed less than two weeks in the past 2 years and that was with a serverly sprained ankle which he played on for the rest of the year and needed surgery to repair....as a blogger, you embarass me

The one on this list I'd most contest is Dalembert

  • You can't put a price on a championship and lately Posey has been a key component to getting one so I'd have to disagree a bit with 21. James Posey. About 24. Nene, yeah he is going to have to show his worth now with the Camby giveaway and all. Mostly a Good List though.

  • Dude you really don't know your business, how could SHAQ not be on this list?
    20+ Mil for 12pts, 8 boards, 50 games, and 30 minutes a game. Give me a break

Yeah I would have to agree with that wholeheartedly ... Take Shawn Marion OUT (cuz let's face it, he can do a lot more for a LOT LESS) and put Shaq IN. Good list overall though.... Lamar O-dumb has been one of the most overpaid players (along with his butt-buddy KWAME) for about 5 yrs now .... no results but continues to put his hand out. it's really shameful if you ask me.
    • dude your stupid SHAQ has four rings and one of the top fifty players of all time!

despite current #4, I humbly submit Jerome James of the New York Knicks. He is deserving of separate and special distinction.

I don't how I missed Raef LaFrentz!! My bad, he's worse than Dalembert making $12,000,000. I also would've put Kwame Brown on here if he had signed before I posted this.......Now.....I love debates.....Dear Mr. Spartan, before you get anymore embarrassed please look up the words hyperbole and exageration next time, thank you....My point is: Vince Carter has no heart, he punks out and looks for excuse when he's looked at to step up in crunch time. Charles Oakley pointed it out eons ago to the point his mom had to speak up for him!! That was almost 10 years ago and he STILL hasn't evolved. Michael Finley's a UFA right now, that's why I didn't put him on here. Shaq was not put on here because when he signed his contract he was still posting big numbers. Right after he won his 4th chip he immediately went down. Regardless, it's hard to put a 1st ballot hall of famer with 4 rings and 3 finals MVPs on this list......

    • rules of the yard no 3. MAKE A POINT...shaq wasnt in the list because he signed his contract when he was still posting big numbers ???? you should have shaq listed next to ben wallace because they were both a HOT COMMODITY when they both signed their contracts..
  • I have to disagree with Marion being on the this list he is a great talent he's been a all-star and played on an olympic team he deserves the money he is getting

i only made one comment on this article...H8 on Crawford, its not my fault he was pretty consistent last year running a position he doesnt or shouldnt, PG and the ignorant fans still think hes inconsistent...I watched the Knicks games last yr and as entertaining and pathetic they were those 4 players deserve their money....Of course you would know PhillyFanz since Philly offers MSG in your cable services..Quit making pathetic correlations Sigmund Freud (Idiots b/c Knicks fans, Pretty Logical) and spill your haterade on someone else...Peace yo...

      .
    • the lakers would not have made it without fisher and gasol so the lakers whole squad could have been put on this list minus ball hog
  • Have to disagree with some of your picks. Etan Thomas had surgery which reduced his productivity. Nene as well (cancer). James Posey won two chips in to yrsl as a vital piece, I would give him the change before Sammy. Marion may be high, but on the Sun's roster he was worth every penny. He got no plays ran for him and still put up 19 and 10 at 6-8in, and injury-free for yrs. I noticed 5 of your picks had some Sixers ties or something Sixers related. Need to do a blog on Sixer's greatest mistakes, salaries and otherwise.

  • Sam Dalembert at the TOP of your list of most overpaid players in the NBA? Methinks you've been reading a little too much Bill "I'm not an NBA GM, I just pretend I'm one in my columns" Simmons.

There were exactly NINE players in the NBA last season who averaged a double-double in points and rebounds...out of those nine, Dalembert was only paid more than the following players:

Dwight Howard (Final year of his rookie contract, he will be paid 3 million more than Dalembert next year)
Al Jefferson (Final year of his rookie contract, he'll be making about a million more than Dalembert next season)
Emeka Okafor (Final year of his rookie contract, depending on how his extension breaks down, he'll be getting a similar or larger salary in 2008/2009 than Sammy)

The best comparison on the list of 9 players to Dalembert is Tyson Chandler from NO, who averaged about 1 point and 1 rebound better a game than Dalembert, and 1 block fewer than Dalembert per game. They make almost the exact same salary. Is Tyson Chandler overpaid? Dalembert is NEVER going to be an offensively dominant center in the NBA, but 10+ million is pretty much the going rate for a starting center who averages 10+ points & rebounds. Given that Ben Wallace was making almost 5 million more than Dalembert for about HALF of his production, it seems kind of stupid to have Sammy at the top of this list, no?

  • Oh, and any time you want to post that list of "plenty of players who are willing" (I notice you didn't say ABLE) "to do what [Dalembert] does, and more for half of what he does" (I assume you meant 'half of what he makes'), I'd be VERY interested to see it. Like who, exactly?

    • htkrocks
BookerT said it best..."Basically all centers are overpaid" so the average center makes too much.....$10mil is what you pay someone to be part of the core of your squad and being that there are very few true centers out there to build around these days, it's a very replaceable position. Problem is, it's hard to replace if nobody wants to take on that salary....Stats are important, but there are intangibles to look at as well....Dalembert is very inconsistent and gets into foul trouble a bit much without a quality backup center to depend on....Personally, I'd rather had Brendan Haywood or Joakim Noah at this point of their careers and at their pay scale. That way, the Sixers would be able to bring in quality depth at that position because it is a physical, foul prone one that needs the depth. Don't think that will happen anytime soon though.
  • kgoon1590
Steve Francis/ the Knicks have to be the worst items on this list. Franchise sits on the bench most of the time. The Knicks might as well all be sitting on the bench.

Look at #4. He's on the Knicks roster.
  • I'm STILL pissed with Joe Dumars for drafting Darko. Of all the players available with the #2 pick, Carmelo, Wade, Bosh.... He picks Darko, who was suppose to be the next Dirk. Darko is overpaid at $5.50hr. He's not even good enought to get in at garbage time...

    • whitejordan32
Darko isn't overpaid. He wasn't supposed to be good right away. And Darko wasn't supposed to be Dirk, he's more of your traditional center. Last year he averaged 7 points and 6 boards in only 23 minutes a game. Detroit was just too impatient with a player they knew were gonna have to be patient with when it all started. If Darko were to play 35 minutes a game, he'd be around 12 points and 10 boards, which would make him easily a top center in the league.

I think Al Harrington definitely deserves a place on that list. The guy makes 10 million a year as a 3-point specialist center. That concept alone makes me want to shoot myself in the head!

    • he is a power forward not cneter
    • kgoon1590
Rashard Lewis also trumped Harrington in the "6-10 shooting specialist" category.
  • abaoaa
Way off with Posey -- the length is a little too long, but he's definitely not overpaid. The guy gets good teams over the top... there's no price too high for what he brings to the court (well, maybe there is), but the MLE sure isn't too high.

I think New Orleans went overboard to talk him out of Boston, so he better get New Orleans over the top because they're stuck with that roster for a minute....The length is way too long.
  • What about Antoine Walker?

  • Gotta have K-Mart on this list. He should replace Dalembert IMO.

  • marion and posey dont belong on here, good ole pat riley isnt gonna shop a producer like marion, once wade gets a new contract, look for marion to get some decent money as well, posey is THE sixth man right now, the only thing im worried about is that NO wants to start him, bad idea, he proved that he was WAY more productive off the bench in Miami.

  • Well, Well, If you are really considering who carry's their weight, you have to consider Who fills the bleachers. Shaq has a good 1-2 years of "Draw" That is what makes a player valuable, Either they win championships, or Draw the fans in for a "Show". Same for D Wade, or Lebron. Speaking of course as a cav's fan I could not avoid noticing that two on your list were Cavaliers. Wow Big Ben and Wally Rough! I do think Ben is definatly on his way out, I've loved his play for ever and was jazzed to have him in the wine and gold, But he does not have the legs he used to have. Wally has to have play's ran for him, He will not create his own shots, He cannot as he is not that strong of a dribbler and mover. So "Top Heavy" yes this is a Danny Ferry Trait, which brings me to another name on the list Larry Hughes! ARG!! Your hard on VC, PLEASE Vince is a BEAST compared to Larry.

You're beyond dumb to even say he single handedly won the chop for Boston.....Boston won with great team D and a man name Paul who's block of Kobe's fadeaway in Game 4 altered his condfidence. If anyone came close to singlehandedly winning the chip it was Pierce. Posey took advantage of opportunities given to him which gave him the opportunity to earn big contract.
  • I THOUGHT SHAQ WOULD BE NUMBER 1....Posey is worth it and Vince Carter id have to disagree. The list should start like this
    1.shaq
    2.antoine walker
    3.steve francis
    4.darco milicic
    4.lamar odom
    5.stephon marbury

    • actually that rule was put in place for Wilt Chamberlain not Shaq. I don't mind that rule but during the playoffs I got tired of hearing Doug Collins sat the rules committee should revisit this rule and stop teams from doing this at any point in the game. if you don't want him sent to the line sit his sorry butt down.
  • no boady is the next dirk he is a horrible player not worth half of what he is payed plain and simple he ant there when he needs to be where is he he dont carry no team seems like they carry him and his salary he should be no 1 on your list along with mcgrady what the hell has he done has he took his team or any team he has been on passed the first round i think he is an outstanding player but when it counts where is he now thats what definds a player and there worth to me playoff time and steve nash as well great player but come time when it counts where is he why rnt these guys on your lis mr iverson where is he come playoff time and excuse me but didnt big ben win a championship and earn his money he is getting paid after playing for years for less than his value was worth. so to the gentleman who makes this so called list most of these guys on the list r pons for the big boys and if the big boys rnt doing there jobs how can most of these guys do theres basketball is a team sport with one or 2 key guys on a team they r the ones that should be on the list so think before you pass your useless judgement on who you think should be on this list because blog or not these r men who have worked there ass off and get shit on and there not even the key guys in most cases if you had half the determination thses guys do you would have put more thought into who really needs to be on this list the big boys i dont see any big boys on the list they r the captains of there ship so to speak so how many of the big boys hell id even put koby in the list of flops a dud a player who think for him self has he done it buy himself yet nope came close but only took shaq a few years to do .so yes those r the boys that need to be on the list this is just my opionion

Also Larry Hughes is WAY too low on this list, he should be much much higher up on this list.

My bad everyone....He's actually averaging $6.5 million per year on his contract.....I didn't put the list in any particular order.
  • Shaq has been overrated for years. He can't do anything but dunk. He's basically the Darryl dawkins of his era. he couldn't do anything against real centers. He lucked and played in an era without ant real centers so he got to be the league bully. He has no skill and it shows now that he can't run as fast and beat everyobne down the court for good position. moses was a really old cat doing more than this bum.

    • shaq dominated when he was in la not many people could dunk on him only like 6 people total did
  • I have to disagree with Steve Francis.
I think he played his contracts too well to be considered overpaid. He convinced Houston hes still got
game when its pretty clear he is on the decline.

  • I think an important point was made that the value of a player is more than just what he brings to the game. Putting peoples' butts in the seats or watching on TV brings in the money. You look at a player like Gilbert Arenas who in my opinion, strictly from a basketball point of view, is overpaid. However, people will buy tickets to watch him, so maybe he's not so overpaid. LeBron is a big draw as well, but even from just a basketball standpoint he deserves the maximum. Players like that are rare.

rashard lewis is getting a max contract. he's being paid like their franchise player. not only is he getting a max contract, when orlando signed him, they essentially were competing with themselves in salary - they didn't need to to pay him so much. hopefully he and DH can win a title cuz that's all they can afford.
      • htkrocks
Which is exactly why I put him on the list....
  • These players are terrible. But every player that sits on the bench is in these guys category. One year Carter was taking long 3s and missing them really bad. Even Barkley talked about all those three point shots. Marion is a hustle player. That 3 point shot is a guess and a hope. Howard has no game. All he does is dunk. He can't do anything else. Lewis can shoot and he can drive to the basket. Most of the players in the league are not that good. Money not talent has taken over the game. Shaq is just like Howard,no game. He can't make a layup. The Refs gave him all four of his rings. Pippen and Shaq should come off the top Fifty players list. The end of their careers was terrible. The league got so bad they had to go foreign. And getting all those teenagers did not help at all. I watch Pro sports as a last resort. It's all terrible. A bunch of dumb whiny children with money.
