King James and his Disciples

As you have heard over the last couple of years, "if LeBron James doesn't get an adequate supporting cast in Cleveland, then he will opt out in 2010 or 2011 and go play for the Knicks, Nets etc." Well the only way that is going to happen for the Cavs, considering the salary cap situation they are in ($25,687,763 over the cap in 08?), is via trade. They do have the 19th pick in the draft, but they will probably be looking for the best player available (Ty Lawson, Kosta Koufos, or Marreese Speights etc.). So lets look at the best way to make the Cavs a viable contender in the East immediately. Step 1:Trade for a shooter that can spot up along the 3 point line to be ready for kicks from B on his dribble-drives. Answer: Cavs Get: Michael Redd Bucks Get:Wally Szczerbiak, Damon Jones (both are expiring contracts) Analysis: Now, people that do not follow basketball the way that i follow basketball might look at this trade and think, "there is no way that the Bucks will do that." Quite the contrary however, the bucks are looking to unload Redd and his max deal ($14.52 mill) for expiring contracts. Jones and Szczerbiak equal deals that would come off the books in 09? to the tune of $16,447,432 mill. That would put the Bucks about $6 mill under the cap, giving them some flexibility to add players in free agency. Plus, Redd went to Ohio State and the Cavs made a run at him last summer when he was a free agent, its a marriage made in heaven. Step 2: Find a big man that can rebound and score on the block. Now many people have heard the Jermaine O'Neal rumors, but the Pacers are asking a King's ransom for a player that isn't worth the compensation, let alone his own contract. So here is another option that will come at a much cheaper price. Answer: Cavs Get: Zach Randolph Knicks Get: Joe Smith, Eric Snow Analysis: As I previously stated the Knicks are trying to clear cap space for the 2010 season when LeBron, Wade, Bosh and Chris Paul could become free agents. The only way that could happen is by unloading Randolph's contract. This could pose a catch 22 for the Cavs however, because in making this trade the Cavs instantly become better on the floor, but it gives a potential suitor the cap space needed to make a run at their King later. I say worry about Now Cavs! New Lineup PG-Delonte West / Daniel Gibson SG-Michael Redd / Sasha Pavlovic SF- LeBron James / Sasha Pavlovic PF- Zach Randolph / Anderson Varejao C- Zydrunus Illgaukas / Ben Wallace That lineup should be enough to propel the Cavs into the Eastern Conference finals or the NBA finals. They have shooters in Redd and Gibson. Energy guys in Wallace and Varejao. Post scorers in Randolph and Illgaukas. Role players in West and Pavlovic. The ultimate playmaker in LeBron James. Sounds good to me. Make LBJ happy, Danny Ferry, or you will be sorry.

The only flaw in your logic is that teams other than the Cavs are interested in both Redd and Z-Bo, and that is going to drive the price up higher than just a couple of expiring contracts. I think Cleveland has a better shot at Redd than Randolph, simply because they can trade Wally-world's huge expiring contract to the rebuilding Bucks. I also think Cleveland will need to include Varejao in any deal - I'm pretty sure he can opt out after this season and considering how long it took to sign him last summer, I doubt he's staying in Cleveland any longer than he has to. If Cleveland offers Varejao, Szczerbiak, and either a young talent (Gibson or Delonte West) and/or a draft pick to Milwaukee, they've got a good shot at making a deal. I wonder how well it will work without Varejao, but Redd's scoring ability would really open up the offense and make LBJ even more dangerous.

  • Cavs should trade for a mid first draft choice, deep draft good talent, make a few small moves with the mid level exception for better overall team talent (pref. someone who can pass) . Save expiring contracts for during the season moves, when they are most valuable. We have one more shot to make this team better before Lebrons contrat time comes around.
