How to play pre-flop in Texas Holdem

In simple terms, we want to learn how to maximise our chances in the build-up to the three community cards being placed on the table. We know we are going to have to pay to play. But in an early position we don't know how much. Late-position players will have the advantage of seeing who has raised and how many people want to get involved before either committing further or folding.
