Al Golden to be Next Penn State Head Football Coach
I know most of you are scratching your head going who the (cough) is Al Golden? Well he is the head coach at Temple and has won 7 straight. Al inherited one of the worst football programs in the country and the fact that Temple has won 7 games is just awesome. That speaks volumes about Al's ability to focus and to win in an environment that was just in shambles, remember the Big East had ousted them a few years prior and this program looked like Duke's or SMU's with no real sunlight over the horizon. Most coaches would have shied away from the Temple job but Al embraced the job as a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY with the thought that if he can build Temple he can prove his coaching ability, and boy has he done that.
People after reading the first paragraph still do not know who this guy is, well let me tell you , he is a Penn State national champion football player that was a converted Linebacker from tightend. Al Golden grew up in Monmouth County New Jersey and played two seasons at St. John Vianney and two Seasons at Red Bank Catholic High School. Al is a guy who will be able to recruit for Penn State with ease since he is already established with all the area football coaches since temple is in the same region. Al has built up infrastructure for recruiting the best players for a program like Penn State, this means that Penn State will be the sought after program in the region unlike any other program in the region.
Now the only thing left to consider is when will Joe Pa step down and my answer is why should he step down? Why not give Joe Pa a step up as in Director of all Football operations, like a CEO to help with the transition of a new football coach. Joe Pa should not be forced out but there needs to be a plan in place that makes the program succeed long after Joe Pa is gone and that is what he wants too. Joe Pa is the best coach in my opinion hands down but to appease a few crotchety readers, I will say that Joe Pa is in the top three old time with no order assessed. Satisfied, all you Woodies out there and you know who you are, and a few Bears out there were ready to come out of hybernation on that one. Seriously, the time for Joe Pa to pick a successor is in the here and now especially since the program is on top, and Al Golden will be recruited from other schools and if PSU does not get him now other schools will and so the opportunity is now. Joe Pa knows in his heart what he needs to do and Al Golden is a respectful guy and will take the GOLDEN opportunity to learn from the living legend especially since he was a student already of Joe Pa's. As a Pitt Alumnus I must hope that Al will put Pitt back on a home and home schedule as that game had many fond memories for all involved. Hail Pitt!!!!!
