50 wings in 1 sitting... not bad!

A friend of mine who is an aspiring and amateur competitive eater had recently come back to San Jose after being in Davis for school. We trek over to Hooters in Campbell, CA (about 15 minutes or so from where we both lived) to celebrate his 21st birthday. We originally intended to only have a normal lunch and not what he would end up doing later. We were continuing our talk about competitive eating and the elite eaters, when I jokingly dared him to eat 50 wings while we were there. He said he was game. Now, had he finish this feat, I had offered to pay for everything. I honestly did not expect him to finish more than 30 wings. As we place my order of a grilled chicken sandwich (which was so bland and something I don't recommend) and his 50 wings, our Hooters girl Megan did a double take and asked "are you sure? You could always take them home if you don't finish them." Now for those who try to imagine how 50 wings may look like in front of a person, just imagine a bar tray filled with the deep fried goodness. As he easily munches on the first 20 wings, the grease and continuous filling stomach starts to catch up with him. He slows down his speed and starts taking his time, believing he could finish all 50 wings for the duration we were there. There were times he wanted to just stop but Megan kept coming back every so often encouraging him that he could do it. I start looking at the bar tray and notice the thick layer of fat and was thinking "O gross, I would've stopped at 30 if anything". As he munches away and we continue to talk about competitive eating and the upcoming Gyoza contest in Los Angeles, our Hooters girl joins in our conversation and reveals that Hooters might be holding a Monday Night Football wing challenge. She told my friend that he should compete considering his attempt today. She also reveals that Joey Chestnut may even make an appearance in the future and have whoever is interested in challenging him to a wing chowdown. For someone who recently ate 241 wings in 30 minutes earlier this year, there would be interesting match-ups, kind of like a Pros vs. Joes type of deal. As 45 minutes or so passes by from the initial wing, my friend Jason finally finishes the last one and collapses into his seat. For someone who was recently VEGAN for 1 1/2 months, eating 50 wings alone was a big accomplishment. Also noting the fact that he didn't train for this attempt and he had done this on a random dare when we sat down. Our Hooters girl Megan checks back and is in utter shock (so was her manager on duty). I keep my end of the bargain and had to pay for the bill. Here's how I would sum up this experience: 50 wings........... $35 Drinks, my tasteless lunch, and tax.......... $30 30% tip for awesome service and having a good time.......... $20 Witnessing this feat.......... priceless Be sure to check on my main blog that I will soon dually post my articles and random tidbits!
