The 1980's Friggin' Ruled!

As a child of the 80's, I often wonder If I grew up in one of the coolest decades, ever?

How bout' a trip down memory lane, when things were "awesome" and it was cool to say the word "awesome".

Pictures, Icons, Events, Tragedies, Sports, Technology, Clothes, Hair, Music, Advertisements, Candy, Pepsi or Coke?

Basically post some stuff that you remember from the 1980's.

Give it a personal touch if you feel like it.

(That's what she said).

I'm not a big fan of the 80s which is surprising given that it was the decade of my childhood. Hearing old 80s songs makes me depressed. You'd think I had a traumatic childhood or something (I didn't). Oh well, here's some of the things I haven't erased from my memory:
    Mac Tonight
pop rocks (eat them with Coke and your stomach will explode!)
    Boy George
hats with 'tails' (It's a baseball cap and a mullet, yeah!)
    MC Hammer
    Gazelle glasses
the amount of Aquanet that was required to properly 'slam' your hair
    jelly shoes
blindingly neon colors (WTF was up with that?)
Demi Moore as an A cup (sure, you've never had plastic surgery, sure)

The ole' fizz wizz and coke spontaneous combustion theory!

Hammertime... Can't touch this... I remember getting Gazelle sneakers?

Aquanet, that's classic... Hair Spray was HUGE, so was hair.

Demi Moore in "One Crazy Summer" along side, who else, john cusack!

Guess Jeans, JF Thibied, Soft soled Reebok's

I guess Coke won the Pepsi challenge, because it seems to be a sonstant.

Then again I remember being the Pepsi Generation.

      Good Stuff Shanelle!

Can`t believe that no one mentioned:

ATARI- the first video game system. Remember chasing the dumb dragon around the `dungeon` once you had the sword?

SPACE INVADERS-the first arcade video game, followed not long after by PAC-MAN. Bonus question, name the three ghosts.

AMIGA COMPUTERS-the first dedicated graphics computer, partially developed by an unknown named Bill Gates. I still use an Amiga hybrid in my 3-D video work.

    LASER-DISCS-movies on TV.

Finally, a bit of correction to Raz, The Pepsi Generation was first used in the mid-60`s for ads that tied in with a daytime beach-bash show produced by Dick Clark, "Where The Action Is". Sonny & Cher headlined the first episode.

YUGO-the automotive answer to Rodney Dangerfield. Later parodied in "Throw Momma From The Train".
    • speedwell
      Placard_complete_small
atari is 70s buddy. now if you mean atari 5600 or 7200, that's 80s. space invaders 70s. pacman that's 80s. yugo is 80s but never made it big in the usa.

Cockrum did 210, Byrne did 150. I have almost a complete run of X-Men. I am HUGE comic book geek. The cartoons in the 80's were the sh*t too. Thundarcats, Silverhawks, Thundar the Barbarian, Hall of Justice, etc....

my brother and i collected a huge run of x-men, from giant sized #94 to somewhere in the mid or late 200s. we stopped when we realized that chris claremont lost his touch. my bro ended up moving them all to his house a ways back and i haven't seen any of them for probably 15+ years. also had the frank miller run on daredevil, i think from 158-170 something. really frank's intro to comics. developed elektra, bullseye, one of the best runs ever in my opinion.
    • speedwell
      Placard_complete_small
john romita jr is fail. i never liked his art. the barry windsor smith x-men were done beautifully. and i always liked bill sienkiewitz' new mutants, especially the covers.
    • jaymz77
      Placard_complete_small
I think that DD run was some of Miller's best work. But the Maleev and Bendis DD is the best DD stuff ever.

I just really dug the x-men characters and Logan was always my favorite. I started out doing Giant Size #1 or Uncanny 94 but once I started earning a decent payheck I went back and collected the older ones too.
    • speedwell
      Placard_complete_small
yeah, you can pick up the old stan lee and jack kirby x-men for a song. at least back when we were kids. they were really under appreciated in the 80s because the current issues were so good.
    • jaymz77
      Placard_complete_small
I never really dug Romita's art that much. It still told a good story. BWS Valiant comics were pretty sweet too. His Weapon-X story will always influence artists and Bill S(whatever his name is) was amazing. His Electra art was amazing.

I was marrried in the Eighties and my first born was in the 80's but unfortunately dudes the late 60's early 70's was without a doubt the best time socially and musically. Still imitated.
    • jaymz77
      Placard_complete_small
The 50's and 20's are still imitated as well. To me the 60s and 70s started the whole "me" generational swing which caused the very selfish and materialistic 80s to happen. I happen to appreciate my Grandfather's generation more than any other. Went off to war and never asked "what's in it for me?" They knew that there were things more important than themselves and they sacrificed their lives for those things. We didn't sit back here and protest the war, we supported our Government, freedom and our troops. The last thing that generation would have done is spit on our kids when they came home. Granted, civil rights was no where near being fixed, but we were a much less selfish America back then.

    • hockeygoddess
      Placard_complete_small
How true jaymz - most all men who came back from the war came home and started their lives again, no moaning. I had a great-uncle see a lot of action and particpated in D-Day invasion. The few times I heard him talk about it sounded like he**, but he came home and lived a long and productive life - never asking for anything. People now days are wimps - always thinking they deserve this or that. I get so mad when I'm behind someone at the grocery store buying steak and seafood with foodstamps, and I can barely afford the basics.
