Defense Positioning in the Offensive Zone

I believe that puck support in the offensive zone has brought many second chances and more puck control. So my question is why cant the Defense race to the blue line and get set up before the break-out starts?

And there position on the offensive zone blue line never follows the play from side to side. Or right to left. In other words a defensive player say left defense should play from his boards to the opposite far post when looking into the zone so the defense overlaps?? It a lot easier to hold the puck in the zone that way.
