Astros invite infielder Cesar Izturis to Spring Training

Monday the Houston Astros signed 33-year-old, switch-hitting, infielder Cesar Izturis, to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The report comes from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, who writes that Izturis "would seem to have a good shot" to make the Astros' Opening Day roster as a utilityman.

Last season Izturis, who is not a threat offensively, batted just .209/.259/.271, over 142 plate appearances with the Reds. He is considered a solid above average defender, who can play at second, short and at third. He’s likely to make the Astros club out of spring training as a utility infielder to back up the Astros young infielders.
