Jack Toffey Gets A Sweet Bonus For Dwyer

The Kansas City Royals seem to be committed to spending decent money on their 2009 draft picks. Rumor has it that the club made an offer to Aaron Crow for $3 million. And Jim Callis recently reported that the Royals signed a fourth rounder for $1.45 million. This is big news for many reasons.

  1. $1.45 million is the most money a team has ever spent on a fourth round selection. It is $150,000 more than the previous high in that round.
  2. The team beating the previous high (held by the Yankees) is the small market KC Royals. Whaaat?
  3. The man receiving the bonus (Chris Dwyer) is represented by Jack Toffey Sports Management.

Who is Jack Toffey Sports Management? Dwyer is the only top 10 round selection advised by the company, and a quick visit to their website, shows a page with the title, “Welcome to Test,” a short animated photo, and some inspirational music. But Jack Toffey, himself, is no amateur in the game of baseball.

Before starting Jack Toffey Sports Management, he was the VP of the Baseball Division for Orpheus Sports & Entertainment. He represented Kris Benson, the #1 overall pick in the 1996 Rule 4 Draft and Brian McCann, before McCann went on to Jet Sports Management.

Now Jack Toffey is busy breaking slot values in the 4th round…and the best part about it is that he is working for himself.
