A Breath of Fresh Air
I recently read the LA Times article about Dodgers First Baseman James Loney and his easy going, "goofy", personality. The article indicates that he frequently brings a smile to the faces of teammates and coaches. That, in turn, brought a smile to my face.
That's the way athletes should be. In this world of millionaire athletes, huge incentive based salaries, and prima donna athletes, it is refreshing to hear about an athlete who doesn't let all of that go to his head. Let's face it; today's athletes are under an enormous amount of pressure to perform. They always have been, but as the dollar signs increase in today's age, the pressure increases right along with it. It's a breath of fresh air to see a player who can go out there and play the game the way it is supposed to be played; with a serving of fun. It's one thing to conduct youself in that manner, but it is another to do so AND still keep your focus and produce.
Last year Loney lead the Dodgers with 90 RBI and he is doing the same this year with 43 to date. Not to mention his .299 career BA. This 25 year old has a bright future in front of him and hopefully as his dollar signs tumble in with increasing numbers, he can keep that loose attitude and be THE role model for aspiring athletes.
