Dodgers on TV in SD is PAINFUL
To preface, I am a frustrated Dodger fan. I can't handle their complete second half meltdown. Yet, pushing aside the futility of the Boys in Blue, I find something that makes my blood boil more than a Shea Hillenbrand at-bat...PADRE TELECASTS!!! As a second year student at the prestigious San Diego State University, the only Dodger games I can watch on TV are against the Padres. That is where my angst lies. The local, independent station of the Padres is Channel 4 San Diego. The telecast is provided by the oh-so-clever Matt Vasgersian and Mark Grant. These guys take the joy out of watching a baseball game. And here's why. They are complete and utter "homers". Traditionally, guys in the booth should have some neutrality. Yet, when the Padres make a "PHENOMENAL" play in the field or get "SCREWED" on balls-and-strikes, its like the biggest fu*king deal. The exclamation in their voices resemble that of high-pitched sorority girls rather than of professional television broadcasters. Who knows? Maybe I am being too tough on these guys. I will profess that I have not paid much attention to other baseball telecasts in other cities. But I can't believe that all these guys sound like this. Perhaps I am spoiled in a sense. I have had the great fortune in my 19 years of being a Los Angeles sports fan growing up with great sports media figures. The obvious is Vin Scully. The man is the best in the business. The list of memorable calls he has made is endless. I've also been blessed with Chick Hearn of Lakers lore. Even in old age (really, really old age) he was still very good. He coined "slam dunk" for crying out loud. Hell, we LA fans even have had Hall of Fame hockey announcer Bob Miller of the Kings. Basically, it comes down to this. I feel absolutely violated when watching the Dodger games on TV in San Diego. Like Cruel and Unusual Punishment-type shit. Some Padre fans might say, "Oh, dude, like, no one is forcing you to watch the games." This concept may be foreign to you Padre fan/dudes, but us loyal dodger fans will not miss an opportunity to watch a Dodger game on TV, even when we are out of the smoggy comforts of Los Angeles. In conclusion, I would like to borrow a line from PlasticFish004. The next time Padre broadcasters feel the urge to blow their loads over a called-strike on the corner of the plate, I say, "Why don't you have a glass of SHUT THE HELL UP."
