Raw deal for senior QB
Arizona State senior quarterback Sam Keller was the next big thing for the Sun Devils when he replaced starter Andrew Walter last year. He enjoyed success early but when he tore ligaments in his thumb against Oregon, his season was over. In steps redshirt freshman Rudy Carpenter and finishes the year with 2,273 yards and 17 touchdowns. Entering camp this spring a QB battle ensued, one which Keller had apparently won by last Friday, but the next day coach Dirk Koetter flip-flopped and named Carpenter the starter. I feel horrible for Keller; this guy bided his time, waited behind Walter, and then showed that he was one of the premier QB’s in the nation until he got hurt. Have some loyalty to the starter, the senior, and a leader. Koetter remarked earlier in camp that the battle was so close he didn’t know when a decision would be made, and that whoever isn’t chosen would be crushed. So why not go with the senior and former starter, give him his last year and then have two solid years with Carpenter at the helm? Koetter screwed up big time by going back on his word to Keller, who had to be in shock. The guy has one year of eligibility left and he’s one of the best in the nation, give it to him! Carpenter has time to spare, although he may not want to, he can afford it unlike Keller. Nebraska is lucky to get one of the preeminent passers in college football next year, especially after losing starter Zac Taylor to graduation following this season.
