Both on and off the field?

We all live and die by our sports teams but I think collegiate sports are at an entirely different level. Don't get me wrong, I love my Redskins and for some insane reason, still listen or watch every Devil Rays game, but neither team gets me as excited or pissed off as watching my beloved University of Central Florida Knights. I have season tickets to both football and basketball and go jogging through campus with my son in his stroller three days a week. Obessed? Sure, I have no problem admitting that. If you fly as much as I do, you've probably seen me on your flight as I always travel with my UCF shirt(s) on. My point being, I take pride in my school. Which is why I also care so much about the athletes that make up the teams I pull for. I am happy that since George O'Leary has taken over the program, discplinary issues that riddled the past regime are gone. We don't see players' showing up on police blotters like our rivals 90 miles to the west of us at the University of South Florida (yes, they are directionally challenged) and players know better than to test O'Leary's borders. Star running back Kevin Smith found out the hard way when he was 5 minutes late for a curfew last year prior to the home game against USF. Most coaches would have brow-beat the player, maybe even given him a hug, but O'Leary sat Smith for the entire game which turned out to be a 7 point home loss because the Knights were unable to run the ball effectively in the second half. Lesson learned. Anyhow, I wonder how other fans feel about their schools and what happens when players get in trouble. Is it par for the course, or does it piss you off. Should we care how our student athletes represent the school both on and off the field?
