My take on the Phil's-Yank's World Series.
Well Ladies and Gent's, it's fall classic time again and once more We as Philadelphian's have the pleasure of witnessing our Phil's attempt to repeat as World Champions. Their opponents; the God Damn Yankees! The team with the two-hundred million dollar payroll. The one who has done their best to buy a World title since the last time they bought the World Series title in 2001.
Last night the Yankees won the American League Championship Series over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, four games to two. The Angels were supposedly a better, more sound team then the New York Yankees and still they were unable to defeat them. The Yankees were supposedly a less sound team then the team they took on during the American League Divisional Series, the Minnesota Twins. Yet, they managed to sweep them right out of the playoffs.
So with the Yankees supposedly this less physically sound team then the two teams they beat during the American League Playoff Series, just how were they able to defeat them? Well, in both series against the Twins and Angels, the Yankees key wins came when the opposing teams made key mistakes.
The Angels whose manager was known for running a tight, mistake-free ship, and yet during that series the Angels were prone to mistakes, miscues, and overthrows. The reason this happened, many are chalking up to the mystique of the New York Yankees.
Sure, it's sounds like a bunch of superstitious nonsense, but when you think about it, the world of Major League Baseball is entirely built on superstitions.
I believe the Angels and the Twins both were pressing to defeat the Yankees, because in my opinion I don't believe that in these teams minds that they are simply facing the 2009 New York Yankees. I believe that when a team faces a Yankees team during the playoffs they are facing the Evil Empire; The Yankees who won twenty-six world series titles. The Yankees empire which has an endless roster of hall of famers, which include Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig and so-on and so-forth.
Teams press against the Yankees because they carry with them where ever they go, their mystique. Now, that doesn't mean that they are no good. A team doesn't win 103 games during a season simply by carrying with them a mystique. No this team has a great amount of talent, this team is like an All-Star team which plays all season long.
I am not the only one who believe this, all the critics, the sports writers, sports talk radio hosts, they all know what kind of team the Phillies are set to face this Wednesday. I woke up this morning searching for someone to pick the Phillies over the Yankees on ESPN, Sports talk radio and on the internet and I couldn't find a legit member of the media who was willing to commit to the Phightin' Phil's. It was as if I was the only person this morning who strongly believed in my team.
It is almost as if the media has fallen victim to the Yankees mystique as well.
Now what threw me over the top was the Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, "We're looking forward to our 27th ring." Steinbrenner said. As if the Phillies were just a mere bump in the road that he had to pay someone to flatten in order to get around.
Well, Steinbrenner I hope you mean American League Championship Ring, because if the Phillies have anything to say about it, you won't be getting sized up for another World Series ring anytime soon.
If the Phillies never win another World Series, heck if they never win another game I will be just fine. As long as they beat the Yankees during this series. I hate Steinbrenner and its time someone knocked him off of his high-horse. And who better then a team who wins the right way, by drafting and bringing players along in their farm system and not simply buying each All-Star ball player who hits the open market.
