OPEN LETTER TO CHRIS WHEELER
Dear Mr. Wheeler.
During the first game against the Yankees on Friday evening, in the first inning after Chase Utley was hit by a pitch and on first, You went into a lengthy explanation about how having a man on first opened a hole because the first baseman had to hold the base runner on and this led to a base hit and utley going from 1st to third. Your partner joined in with replay so we all could enjoy this insight.
Thanks for this insight. I Tivo’d it for my 8 year old grandson and his friends and will keep it along with the explanation (with replay and telestrater) from last years game against the Cubs when the wind was blowing in and you spent several minutes explaining how the wind holds up a fly ball and the outfielders don’t have to play as deep as when there is NO wind!
Truly, having a choice of letting a game breath or filling ‘dead’ time with insight like this, I’ll take the ‘insight’. Not to mention that you get to talk more and if I’m lucky, McCarthy will get involved and repeat almost everything you say so I get to hear it two or three times with replay and circles and arrows!
Awesome.
Keep up the good work.
My parents use to enjoy the sounds of the game and when watching one, they pretty much knew what they were seeing and didn’t have to have anyone explain complicated situations like this from announcers like Bill Campbell, By Sohm, Ashburn and even Harry K. Their loss! They thought they were being treated like adult viewer! Suckers!
Remember, it’s not about the game - it’s about the announcers, so talk more! There are so many other topics for you to cover, like how a player catches the ball AND has his foot on the bag at the same time or how outfileders get UNDER a fly ball to catch it! Things like that you can fill many minutes with.
Sadly, the Yanks/Phils are on Fox today. Not much of an improvement chatter wise (they can talk more than Joe Morgan!) But without the T-ball insight you provide for my grandson and his friends.
I’m with you - more talk and less game, please!
