Three Phillies to have surgery
The Philadelphia Phillies announced that three players will undergo surgery during the upcoming days.
According to David Murphy's 'High Cheese' blog on Philly.com, a press release was sent out stating that right-hander Brad Lidge is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. Team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti will perform the surgery on the Phil's closer. Brad Lidge will also have his right flexor/pronator tendon evaluated.
The surgery which is to be done on Lidge may just answer why he was so off-and-on (really so off) during the 2009 season, after being so good during the Phillies 2008 World Series winning season.
Other members of the Phil's to have off-season surgery include outfielder Raul Ibanez, who is scheduled for surgery Monday to repair a sports hernia. Dr. Bill Meyers will perform the surgery. Meyers, a noted abdominal surgeon based at Drexel, also has repaired the sports hernias of several Philadelphia Eagles players, such as Donovan McNabb, Kevin Curtis, LJ Smith and Dirk Johnson, and he has also performed surgery of Danny Briere of the Flyers.
Left-handed reliever Scott Eyre is also scheduled for surgery Monday with Phillies team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti, like closer Brad Lidge Eyre is going under the knife in order to have loose bodies removed from his pitching elbow.
