Broncos Backfield Competition Update

Mike Shanahan announced on Wednesday that the Broncos starting running back job is still up for grabs (Thanks Shanny, let me see if I can undraft Mike Bell). It seems very likely that Denver will be using a committee this year as no one has stepped up and claimed the job for themselves. Entering tonight's preseason finale, linked is an article breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of the four backs fighting for time in Denver...Mike Bell, Tatum Bell, Ron Dayne and Cedric Cobbs.

I'm with ya...Mike, Tatum, Cedric, Ron?....make up your F'ing mind already Shanny...I wasn't about to waste 4 draft picks but anyone of those RB's could have 1,000 yards if given th chance.

The Bell situation didn’t get much clearer Thursday night, as Mike rushed for 74 yards on 9 carries and Tatum gained 48 yards with a touchdown. To add a little more to the mix, Cedric Cobbs picked up 34 yards on 8 carries. Both the Bell’s picked up some big gains, with Mike breaking a 38-yarder and Tatum rushing one for 22. This Denver running situation is ugly, but for Mike Shanahan it is great. This offensive line and run game are a dangerous combination. At this point it is still a toss up, as both Mike and Tatum should see their share of carries. Ron Dayne remains at the bottom of the list in this group. Denver will visit the Rams on September 1 for their first regular season matchup.

Ron Dayne is gone. Tatum has never carried the ball more than 17 times in a game, but you don't sit guys who ran for 5 yards a pop the year before. I'm starting to think we're looking at a pretty strict 15 carries each and I'm no suret a big game here or there by one or the other will change that distribution.
