15 Coaches Hired After Reid Have Done As Much If Not More Than Him.
In Andy Reid's tenure as the Head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles 15 different coaches who have been hired at the same time or after him have been to or have won the Super bowl. Some have multiple times. Ironically many of the names on this list have lost their jobs despite in some cases Super bowl success yet Andy Reid and his mediocrity remains constant. Many of the coach on this list have famously out coached Andy Reid on several occasions. Still Reid has kept his job. The bottom line is there are 15 guys on this list who could have at least done as good of a job as Reid if not better. SO PLEASE STOP THINKING NOBODY ELSE CAN DO THE JOB, BECAUSE THESE GUYS WHO HAVE BEEN HIRED AFTER REID HAVE DONE JUST AS GOOD IF NOT A BETTER JOB THAN REID! Not to mention a guy like Mike Smith who's team seems to boast double digit win seasons every year since he's been coaching. Tony Dungy seemed to get the Buccaneers to the playoffs every year and yet he still lost his job. The same went for Jim Mora in Indy yet he lost his job for Tony Dungy. In both cases THE NEXT GUY WON THE SUPER BOWL! Stop living in mediocre fear Eagles fans. Andy Reid is not the end and all.
Brian Billick Hired 1999 1 Super Bowl
Bill Bellichick Hired 2000 3 Super Bowl victories. 5 Super Bowl appearances.
Mike Martz Hired 2000 1 Super Bowl appearance
Bill Callahan Hired 2002 1 Super Bowl appearance
Jon Gruden Hired 2002 1 Super bowl victory
Jon Fox Hired 2002 1 Super Bowl appearance
Mike Holmgren Hired 1999 1 Super Bowl appearance
Tony Dungy Hired 2002 1 Super Bowl victory
Lovie Smith Hired 2006 1 Super Bowl appearance
Tom Coughlin Hired 2004 2 Super Bowl victories
Ken Whisenhunt Hired 2007 1 Super bowl appearance
Mike Tomlin Hired 2007 1 Super Bowl victory 2 appearances
Sean Payton Hired 2006 1 Super Bowl victory
Jim Caldwell Hired 2009 1 Super Bowl Appearance
Mike McCarthy Hired 2006 1 Super Bowl victory
-
So what if you have the most wins in Eagles history if you can't win the big game? Bill Bellichick was hired after Reid and not only has more Super Bowl victories than Reid, but he has more career victories than Reid!Heck he has more victories over Reid period!Keeping Reid is nothing more than the mentality of fear. There is no reason to keep him. These guys have proven they can do as much as he has with less time to do it. I will go further to submit that had the fired guys been with the Eagles they might have kept their jobs too and been able to also be the All Time Winningest Coach Of The Eagles!
-
And yet the stadium is filled, and the waiting list is long, and the players (See: De$ean Jackson) are never in a rush to leave here. Some even come back (for less money) after bitter partings.
Owner's vote.
Fan's dollars.
Player's confidence.
Player's buying in.
Seems like a recipe for keeping a job to me. -
Reid is a "players coach". So what? The fact that fans are in the seats only speaks to how great the Philadelphia fanbase really is and has nothing to do with Reid in general. People were putting their fannies in the seats to watch Rich Kotite! Tom Coughlin IS NOT A PLAYERS COACH YET HE WINS SUPER BOWLS. I don't care if the players love or hate the coach. I care about my team winning Super Bowls. REID IS NOT THE GUY TO GET IT DONE. You went on and on about who the Eagles can get to replace him, well I have shown you several guys who have been as good if not better than him who were hired at the same time or after him. The who "we can't find nobody else" argument is weak.
-
How great the fanbase is? Towards the end fans DIDN't put their butts in those seats, and Kotite was fired.
Ray Rhodes didn't put those fannies back in those seats, games were blacked-out, Lurie's investment was going south and so he then fired Rhodes. Lurie gave Rhodes FOUR years. In the last two Rhodes went 6-9 then 3-13 before Lurie pulled the trigger. And he owed Rhodes FAR less.
And again, I don't think he's irreplaceable. Again, my question is replaceable with who that would be better. Keep in mind replaceable means the prospective new guy wants to TAKE Reid's vacated spot. -
You're wrong. It's been hard to get an Eagles season ticket. When Lurie made that new stadium and charged for seat licenses people complained, but people paid despite the fact at that time the Eagles weren't that good. You ask who would be better and my answer is the responsibility to
find Andy Reid's replacement is the responsibility of the Eagles front office to do their due diligence and pick the right guy. Who thought a Fat Quarterbacks coach from Green Bay would one day become the Eagles All Time Winningest Coach? Don't act like Reid irreplaceable. Reid himself replaced somebody. -
Im not sure where anyone gets the idea he is a"players coach". Reid cant motivate anyone. Result- no superbowl win.
-
Well he certainly can't motivate players to get him wins in close games.
-
What is the point of the fire Reid campaign? I said WEEKS ago that Reid was never in danger of being fired and lo and behold...TA DA! There's been a contingent after that man's job for seven or so years now. Doesn't it get exhausting after a while?
Eventually Andy Reid won't be the Eagles coach anymore. He'll either retire, or be fired, or die in office. But the fact is, Lurie sticks with him EVERY year and is not about to deep six a guy who goes 8-8 in a bad year, never misses the playoffs two years in row, and keeps paying butts in the seats. There's much more to this game than just Super Bowl wins.
Lurie went into debt to buy this team and is now a billionaire behind replacing Ray Rhodes with this guy. My guess is Reid will need to string together a couple of SUB .500 seasons in order for Lurie to even review his status.
-
"There's much more to this game than just Super Bowl wins"
I will retort with a few quotes from Vince Lombardi.
“Success demands singleness of purpose.” Now what do you think the "singleness of purpose" Mr. Lombardi was speaking of? Do you think it was filling seats? Filling the owners pockets with money? I think the "singleness of purpose" is about winning championships.
Here's another....“Winning is not a sometime thing…it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while…you don’t do the right thing once in a while…you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit.” This quote is slightly incomplete as Mr. Lombardi also mentions how losing is also a habit and losing is something Mr. Reid has been doing in the playoffs (if he makes it) for some time now.
Here is another.
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." That's pretty much what Andy is right now isn't he? A good loser. Then again he isn't even that anymore.
Here's a good one for you. "Some people try to find things in this game that don't exist but football is only two things - blocking and tackling." Blocking and tackling... Two things Andy Reid's teams seem to be lacking in...
"There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay and I never want to finish second again." Of course we Eagles fans seem to be ecstatic about finishing second these days. We're number two!
"We would accomplish many more things if we did not think of them as impossible." Which is exactly what would happen if the Eagles weren't afraid to get rid of 8-8 Reid.
"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." Apparently unless your the Eagles. Then it's more to this game than just winning... Whatever that means...
-
To you winning is just bragging rights. Anytime you sink 185 million into an investment, your first priority will be solvency, then profit. Often then next thing is a legacy OUTSIDE of football.
The problem you have, is Lurie REPEATEDLY demonstrates that he has priorities that supersede your desire to see him hoist a trophy.
Him going from being 185 million in the hole to a billionaire IS HIM WINNING. CONSISTENTLY.
You keep wanting to define the priorities and governing principles of someone else's property, instead of simply respecting that the man is happy with what he has. If he wasn't he could afford to replace it.
By September you'll be rooting for Reid to win again. Either that or you'll root against your team, like some tin-foil hat wearers we know.
I root for the Raiders, but I NEVER root against the Eagles. Are you as dedicated a fan as I am ?
-
You know what? Forget that last bit. I have no right to challenge your fanhood. We all express in different ways.
-
First and foremost I never once wrote I am rooting against the Eagles nor have I written I am rooting against Reid. Second why do you as a fan give a crap about the pockets of Jeff Lurie? You as a fan should be more concerned with winning than money considering you as a fan aren't making a cent of HIS MONEY. Winning isn't about bragging rights to me. It's about a tradition. Do you know why the Eagles number one defense in 91 isn't considered one of the best all time? No Rings. Do you know why your bud McNabb is a fringe Hall of Fame player at best? No Rings. Do you know why Irvin and Aikman were first ballot HOF players even though there are guys with better stats than them not in the Hall? Three rings. This game is about winning for the fans not about who makes more money. You ought to know that, but as you mentioned YOU ARE A RAIDERS FAN so perhaps you perspective on this matter is off.
-
I care about Lurie's pockets because I have friends who feed their families with JOBS at that stadium. As long as Lurie's pockets are filled the team stays here. And in a tight economy more jobs won't disappear.
There are families who regard going to these games here as a tradition.
The power of the "We were THERE" moments shared by people who may have little else in common. EZ, I don't even know your name, yet here we are, passionately discussing OUR team.
As I said there are more important things than some dumb trophy. Be nice to win it and have all that city-wide goodwill and a parade? You bet your a$$ it would be; but we root for this team because it's ours. What makes this team OURS it that it's HERE.
My best friends team is about to move from San Francisco to Santa Clara. He says people back home are devastated. He's been here in Philly for 26 years and even HE'S wounded. He's a San Fran native and it feels like their taking his team away. Ask a Baltimore fan what that feels like. The Raiders (Oakland/Los Angeles/Oakland/Los Angeles?) practically have wheels. I feel for the passionate Oakland fans. I really do. I know what sports franchises can mean to families, neighborhoods and a city.
Bigger things EZ. Bigger things.
-
Flip I don't think your friends will go hungry if Lurie has to pay a few mil to Desean Jackson. In fact if Lurie is willing to nickel and dime his best receiver out of money he deserves, then you can bet he's doing the same to your friends. Don't let them pop off on facebook or twitter about it though. They would find themselves out of a job.
-
(Smh) Dude, nobody cares about De$ean Jackson. And none of my friends work for the Eagles organization.
You asked why I was concerned with Lurie's pockets, in a post that has to do with ANDY REID. My point is the team stays if it is profitable. It's prfoitable if it sells tickets. It sells tickets if the fans are happy. Fans are happy if the team does well. The team does well because it is well led. Who is this teams leader?
Andy Reid.
Why would Lurie change what works for him?
I care because in a tight economy you don't throw folks out of work, and if this team leaves that is PRECISELY what will happen to sales window clerks, janitors, shop vendors, parking valets, security officers, cooks, courtesy aids, staff engineers, sales executives, maintenance workers, poster printing agencies, outside vendors of local services (like Maglio meats), and others. Literally THOUSANDS of livelihoods ride on the presence of THIS sports franchise alone.
So I of course see value in Lurie's team beyond a simple trophy. To keep this team here, means they guy who owns it must be paid. And THAT is why I care. -
You are 100% right. because someone has "some " experience on the field doesnt give him real good insight on winning.
-
great blog-i agree with everything, any time, you put unproven offensve line coach, who never call a defensive game. that,sh!!!t was out of line, juan could of been defensive back coach,if he wanted to coach defense, and hire proven coordinator, and now its backwards, look at this, bowles a proven defensive guy, could of been coordinator, backs coach, that hire could of been last year. Its time 14 years is long enough,to get yor act together, reid needs to put up or shut up this year with coaches and team.
-
The problem with hiring a legit D Coordinator is apparently connected to the Wide 9 system and Washburn. Apparently there aren't many coaches out there who like the system and there are even less who wish to work with Washburn. Once the Eagles hired him they made it difficult to bring in a real defensive mind. They got stuck with Juan.
-
All the eagle moves are about money and control. Nothing they have done is getting them closer to a superbowl. Its a mercenary team that can compete but doesnt have the guts to take it further. Its a leaderless group of fighters with no cause but to collect a paycheck. There are no roots to the fans , city ..etc This is a a loser formula.
-
I don't know if I would go that far, but I do think there is something wrong with Eagles fans that seem far more concerned with Lurie's bottom dollar than they are with the Eagles winning. I think something is wrong with fans more concerned with a player retiring here than they are with winning. As Herm Edwards once said "You play to win the game!"
-
u can make an argument for a lot of those coaches seasons being flukes. i mean its nice to get one ring n i would love it, but people like reid cause he gives the stability of knowing ur gonna make the playoffs, same as with dmac. however unlike with dmac it wouldnt bother me if reid left but i would be pissed if the team went to marty. i dont want gruden or cowher. i would need to see more on the possible replacements before i make a choice. im not gonna change for the sake of change. im gonna change to win n if i find out reid gives the best chance he comes back if someone else does they get the job
-
You can also make an argument for Reid to be replaced. Stability gets you nowhere in sports. The irony is many of the "flukes" have out coached Reid on countless occasions and that my friend is no fluke. People have clearly forgotten the fact Reid himself was a nobody before the Eagles scooped him up. He wasn't some great name from the past nor was he a hot commodity. He was the quarterbacks coach (NOT EVEN A COORDINATOR) for the Packers. I don't need to see names. I need for the people responsible for hiring a new coach to do their jobs. This also is not about change for the sake of change. This game is about winning championships and the fact is Andy Reid is not going to get that done in Philly. I would love to be wrong on this, but I know I'm right. Andy doesn't adjust well in games. Andy's teams have always been poor with clock management. Lately Andy's teams have taking unnecessary penalties and have been terrible with protecting of the football. in other words Andy's teams are undisciplined. That's not change for change sake. That's a coach failing to do his job properly. He needs to go.
-
So for the hundredth time: Who would be better?
-
My answer is that's not my job to find that person. The Eagles found Reid. What makes you so sure now they are incapable of finding his replacement?
-
Because like you they can't think of someone they like better. Even Newt Gingrich doesn't change wives until he has someone he likes better, ready to go.
Can you imagine if they fire Reid and have trouble replacing him the way they had a hard time replacing McDermott? Would you like to see them promote a cheerleader? She wouldn't be Reid, so I guess you'd be thrilled; but do you think she'd be an improvement? -
Wrong they simply aren't looking, because they are still making money. You can't actually believe that Andy is the only person capable. Out of countless Offensive/Defensive Coordinators, Position coaches, D1-D3 College coaches/coordinators, and former coaches you mean to tell me you actually believe Andy Reid is the only one capable of being a coach????? Under that type of logic you are then implying that Juan Castillio is the Eagles defensive coordinator, because they can't find anyone better. That's insane my friend.
-
I agree! They simply aren't looking. Why would they? Lurie is happy with what he has. So are 66,000 paying fans. If it ain't broke...
-
sounds like the same things u were saying about dmac. maybe u just have no clue whats going on???
-
I have no clue? What's D-Mac done since he left? Truth of the matter is I saw the writing on the wall with D-Mac. The Eagles mad that clear, but fans who lead with their hearts and not with their heads got their hearts broken. Now you are leading with fear. You would rather keep the mediocrity of today (the known) rather than make a move to improve the team. Coaches get fired all the time. Reid's past his prime here. The fact is he's getting stale here and so is his message. The time to move from him is now. Get an new coach in here who can get these players to play.
-
people said the same about coughlin. dmac has sucked but his last season here was one of his best. he would of been better here than with the skins or vikes. we havent had anything better than dmac since he left. what makes u think we can get someone better than reid? how many coaches since reid has been hired have been worse? im not looking at any numbers but im willing to bet its more than 15 a good deal more than 15
-
Your McNabb argument would hold water if the teams he was on did better once he left. They didn't. Both teams are still embarrassments to their respective cities. One of those teams has a coach who won TWO Super Bowls by the way.
-
Those teams are bad, because their quarterback play is bad. Before McNabb got to the Vikings and when Favre was good they were one of the best teams in the league. When Favre turned to crap so did the team. McNabb just perpetuated the same crappy quarterback play. Same goes for the Redskins. If they get a real quarterback they will be a better team. The fact no team wants to go near McNabb only furthers the point that the Eagles did right to replace him. Now all they need to do is replace Reid.
-
i have never seen Reid out coach anyone in a game. But to his credit he can game plan. Dont ask for any adjustments.
-
how many coaches hired after reid didnt work? what about del rio? wasnt he suppose to get the jags over the hump after coughlin couldnt? just like coughlin should of been fired in new york cause he couldnt do it there. how did raheem morris do after gruden? jim caldwell after dungy? all the coaches in san fran? seattle? st. louis? the bills? the browns find a coach yet? chiefs? skins? he did win 2 super bowls but what has he done with the skins? panthers? vikes? raiders? were looking good but got rid of their coach. titans make the right move getting rid of fisher? dolphins ? jets have anything to brag about? lots of teams havent done anything n how many coaches did they go through???? reid aint looking so bad now is he?
-
here you go,flip- Tony dungy, bill Parcells, Nick mangini, Jon Gruden. Bill Cowher...etc
-
mangini? really? what did parcells do in miami? cowher will change too much to win any time soon n took him 14 years n the worst super bowl in the history of super bowls to win. what did dungy ever win? he got the boot in tampa cause he couldnt get the team over the hump n could hardly win in indy with peyton manning. let me guess it was peytons fault right? gruden won fast but fell way off and his replacement hasnt done anything. point is all coaches have problems some as bad as reid. like mangini? really? u cant be serious about him
-
That whole list is laughable isn't it?
Aside from possibly Mangini, NONE of those guys is interested in coaching right now. So I guess there STILL is no one to replace Reid. -
plus why would we want mangini?
-
Who wrote anything about Mangini and why do you assume that his Reid's replacement will fail? After all Reid himself replaced someone and considering Reid was a quarterbacks coach at the time don't you think that give some credence to the abilities of the guys who picked him? Oh and although I wouldn't want Mangini as our coach, I don't think he's dumb enough to hire an offensive line coach to be his defensive coordinator. Just sayin.
-
hollywood mentioned mangini all im going off of is u mentioned 15 coaches who have out performed reid or done as well or close to as well. how many have done worse? i named a bunch of teams who havent had a good coach in a long time. thought they did but it didnt work out. hollywood named coaches he thought are better than reid. i wrote a response flip agreed we shared a laugh about holly wanting mangini. oh and mangini might. he did come from the pats where mangini n josh mcdaniels did the same thing, by switching sides n he thought it was a good move n is a good idea to do it this way. i seen him say it on first take straight out of his mouth.
-
What's laughable is this idea of Andy Reid suddenly becoming Bill Cowher and winning a super bowl. It's about as laughable as that argument people had that McNabb would suddenly become Jon Elway. Percentage wise you hoping Reid suddenly becomes Cowher has far less a chance of happening as the Eagles replacing Reid with a guy who is capable of getting this team to the Super bowl.
-
why cant he become cowher? was cowher so much better than him during his time before the refs handed him a super bowl?
-
Moot point. The coach is the coach. Here's to watching seven more years of idiots trying to get him canned.
-
I don't care if Reid is the coach for seven more years as long as he wins a super bowl at in that time frame. If that makes me an "idiot" than I am proud to be one, but I would rather be an idiot than insane, which those who are just happy in mediocrity clearly are. Choosing Riley Cooper over Desean Jackson is a clear case of someone being happy with mediocrity.
-
Then get ready to root for mediocrity, because the Eagles are about to do just that. LOL.
-
I fail to see why losing Jackson for Cooper would make any fan LOL. The Eagles might as well dump Vick for Kafka and McCoy for Chad Hall. I guess that would make you extremely ecstatic.
-
Well the Refs wont be handing Reid a Super Bowl as you called it, but if somehow Reid can be Cowher why then couldn't Reid's replacement be as good as a Tony Dungy or better yet Cowher replacement Mike Tomlin? You see there are far more sucess stories of guys going to a place and taking that team to a championship than there are of guys just hanging around and eventually winning Championships. You are comparing Reid to the wron coach that stayed to long. I liken him more to Jeff Fisher and he will ruin this team (like Fisher did) if they keep him around.
-
and there r far more cases of a coaches replacement being worse u just dont remember them cause people dont remember who lost. im still waiting to here how thw browns got better the bills dolphins panthers hell even the chargers. all teams who replaced a coach n havent done squat and thats just recently there r alot more teams out there that havent done anything after replacing their coach. far more failure stories
-
You don't think the Panthers have gotten better? Then you are in the minority. I tell you this. There are even fewer situations of a coach just staying in a situation and suddenly changing it around. Other than Bill Cowher name me one other situation where a coach was in a place for a long period of time an won the Super Bowl?
-
panthers got a QB that wont them some games still not improved overall n its been how long since they were relavent? took tom landry 10 years to win a championship
