Eagles fans, do you want Andy Reid to stay or go?
There has simply been no better head coach in Philadelphia Eagles history. But over the last couple years there have been various repots stating that 2010 could be Andy Reid's last season as Eagles head coach. The reasoning behind this varies from Andy's personal struggles with trying to keep he two Son's out of trouble and off drugs, to the speculation that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is angry that Reid has yet to win him a Super Bowl.
Even as early as last November when the Eagles lost to the Baltimore Ravens 36-7, Andy's job security in Philadelphia was in serious jeopardy or at least everyone assumed that it was. But Andy's move to bench his starting quarterback Donovan McNabb turned out to be what saved their 2008 season.
From that point on the Eagles went from a 5-5-1 team to almost making a trip back to the Super Bowl.
This season the Eagles are 2-1, with 13 games to go. The way things look the Eagles are one of the best team in the NFC, but they normally are one of the better teams in the NFC. It has become rare to find the Eagles at the bottom of the barrel in the league.
The problem that has plagued Andy's career is winning the big one, and does he actually have what it takes to do so. Sure, Andy Reid is a great coach, no doubt about it. But when the chips are down he tends to make the same mistakes year in and year out. For instance, not running the ball or not properly running a two-minute offense.
Andy has been compared to Bill Cowher, who in Pittsburgh went years without winning the big game. When some beg to differ that Andy's tenure in Philly is more like Coach Dungy's in Tampa Bay. Where Tony Dungy was extremely good for a very long time but needed that "other" coach to help push them over the breaking point in order to win it all. In Tampa it was Coach Gruden who did it for the Buccaneers.
Here some fans and media members like Sal Paolantonio believe that Andy has done all he can do and is now at his wits end trying trick plays like the Wildcat believing that may be the key to winning a Super Bowl here in Philadelphia. Sal Paolantonio said on Daily New Live that he believes that Joe Banner and Jeffrey Lurie should go in a different direction and not offer Reid a new contract.
Sal believes that one of the Super Bowl winning coaches who are currently still out on the market would be more likely to bring the Eagles a world championship. Coaches like, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden.
Team President Joe Banner told Larry Kane of Comcast in an interview to be aired Sunday night that Reid's tenure will continue in Philadelphia.
"Yeah, I'm sure it will be," Banner said about the possibility of Andy Reid getting a new contract extension in the Philadelphia Inquirer. "We have a phenomenal relationship with him. We view him as being in the top couple of coaches in the league."
"Andy could have a bad week, have a bad year, and that wouldn't change the fact that he's in the upper echelon of coaches in this league, and we feel lucky to have him," Banner said. "So, at whatever point, I'm sure that issue will be resolved."
I don't normally ever agree with Joe Banner, but in this case I will make an exception. I have been an Eagles fan for my entire life. I recall as a young kid having the worst coaches money could buy and also having some okay, mediocre ones too. But only one Andy Reid.
For those of you who are calling for Andy's walking papers and begging the team to pursue one of the other head coaches, remember this; Andy is only one win away from being as good is not better then the head coaches mentioned above. I believe that in time, perhaps this season (Hopefully). Once he obtains that one win and he will be named not as one of the best coaches to never win a Super Bowl. But one of the best coaches to win a Super Bowl!
