Eagles sign a running back

It was almost a week ago that Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid announced that middle linebacker Omar Gaither would have surgery on his left foot due to the injury he sustained during the Eagles loss to the Oakland Raiders. Wednesday, the Eagles made another announcement concerning Omar Gaither, that they have gone ahead and placed him on injury reserve.

Omar's place wouldn't remain vacant for long, the Eagles signed running back P.J. Hill from the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Using Omar's roster spot to sign a running back is obvious and revealing some might say, considering that starting running back Brian Westbrook suffered a sever concussion during Monday night's game against the Washington Redskins.

Still, even with the addition of Hill, Andy Reid is not willing to rule Westbrook out for Sunday afternoon's game against the rival New York Giants. But Andy really doesn't have to say a peep. With the signing of Hill he has told the world that Brian Westbrook will be resting his concussed head this Sunday.

Running Back P.J. Hill is an undrafted rookie, who played his college ball for the Wisconsin Badgers. During his three seasons for the Badgers, Hill rushed for 4,000 yards and 42 touchdowns. Although he was quite productive at Wisconsin, he didn't rate as excellent in any one facet of his game and scouts wondered if he could hold up in the National Football League considering his Physical running style.

Hill is an unlikely candidate for a Philadelphia Eagles running back, by that I mean he lacks the receiving skills that Andy Reid looks for in a running back (see Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy). Which means he would potentially be used on third down and short yardage situations.
