How about Witherspoon's first game as an Eagle?

He and Akeem Jordan led the game with 8 tackles, and Will also forced a fumble, and took an interception in for a TD. I was really impressed with what I saw from him and hope it continues on...

glad to have him. can't wait to see him with stewart bradley. i still wanna draft an LB in the first round to see those three in action. WTF were the rams thinkin in getting rid of him? i missed brandon gibson tremendously but felt better watchin witherspoon.
    • hollywoodeagle
He played very well last night. Showed versatility and speed. Thats what you get with good solid veterans.

He was a must have cause with no one in the middle we are done. He can cover and tackle and he compliments are defense very well. he appears to be very smart as well. He has already showed he's a playmaker and that's what I like.
    • hollywoodeagle
sort of a hybrid player. Sideline to sideline capable but not the best and strong at the point of attack but not the best and a solid cover guy but not the best. But overall, a really interesting player in the scheme. As long as he stays as active as he was vs. skins he might take the position from bradley. "might"
  • DeJack_10
Hmmm... draft a LB in the first round? I honestly wouldnt be surprised if the Eagles drafted another Safety. Im not exactly sold on Macho.

But back on topic: Witherspoon is a beast! Lol
    • hollywoodeagle
Macho not making many plays. But pretty good cover safety just not much on run support so far.
    • NPhillyBirdman
      Placard_complete_small
Give him time, he's still learning the system and like they said, the last rookie free safety to start was Dawk so that tells a lot about his work ethic and play. What's killing me is Asante and his tackling.

Witherspoon makes our defense looke even faster. This is a huge pick up.
    • hollywoodeagle
Yeah, I agree the defense seemed unusually fast. This is Reids strength choosing personel. Nice pickup and worth a 6th round speculation.
  • EazyEagleZ
Witherspoon looked good. The offense did not.
    • hollywoodeagle
I still think eagles need a RB. Im not sold on McCoy. I would like to see Bunkley get some snaps.
    • EazyEagleZ
I hear you. Especially when you look at how welll Buck has played for Denver. DeJack is starting to come into his own now. I think Shady will eventually be good, but right now the running game is just not there.
    • NPhillyBirdman
      Placard_complete_small
I think you mean Buckley. If you want Bunkley our defensive lineman to take snaps like the FRIDGE did with Chicago on goaline then IDK but I think you mean Buckley and I like McCoy. he is not a power back that will run up the gut. I feel that's what we need. We shoulda kept Buckhalter, I liked him.
    • calieagle99
Lol NP! Hopefully Andy reads this and gives Broderick some carries on third and short! lol

All he has to do is run and fall down lol. He;ll you saw the lineman for the Chiefs off that deflection. Give these big boys the ball and let them show us a thing or two.

I know about the mistake didnt feel like correcting. But you get my drift. at least you read my posts. thanks.

Witherspoon proved himself to be an EAGLE yesterday, but I agree with Eazy, the Offense looked terrible. I know we got the W, but I feel as though all we accomplished was not losing the game.
    • hollywoodeagle
If this was the 10th game of the season I would be worried but i think the next few weeks will shed light on how good this team can be.

SPOON. but, still can`t stop tight ends. that needs to happen very soon.
    • EazyEagleZ
They also need to cut down on the penalties, establish a running game, and play better offensively. They can't win against good teams playing like they did.
    • khollen
      Placard_complete_small
agree. they still need to establish the running game.
    • hollywoodeagle
A MLB alone on tight end always looks a little odd but he was close and wasnt what i would call "beat"
  • eagles4ever05
Offense looked terrible I think what the Eagles need is a power running back we kept getting stopped at the line of scrimmage. McNabb wasnt all that great either though we need a spark other than Desean Jackson. Witherspoon is a great pickup He was everywhere. The Eagles should look into getting another LB in the draft or a FS Macho is just not what we need.
    • EazyEagleZ
I don't think a power back matters here. The offensive line did not hold their blocks and the scheme was poor as well. The line gave up 3 sacks. Look at the skind line. Portis looked bad too, and he is suppose to be a good back, and in the past he has hurt us in the run game. The line has to play better.
    • khollen
      Placard_complete_small
agree, the line wasn`t very good.
    • DeJack_10
Power RB?! We got that. I still dont understand why they dont use Weaver more often.
    • eagles4ever05
yea the line did suck. We never did use the FB much but we do need to use Weaver more
    • hollywoodeagle
I will say this when running westbrook looked exceptionally fast but he needs additional help. Will anyone be willing to have a looksy at Duece McCallister
    • eagles4ever05
      No Dueces career is over
    • hollywoodeagle
4ever Macho is a rookie and he is helping out in the secondary in coverage just not a big presence. hes small and his game isnt to come up fast and hard and hit a RB head on. He was a cornerback/safety in college. hes learning. at least he is out there.
    • eagles4ever05
We need a safety that can HIT a RB head on or a TE/WR Macho can cover thats it. But I hope I can be proven wrong I really hope so
    • hollywoodeagle
He might be a bit outclassed at this level. Physical strong safeties usually lack speed. Its hard to find both unless you draft near 1st round.
    • hollywoodeagle
dont mean strong like a strong safety position
  • EazyEagleZ
I am stunned to see the Phillies going with Pedro game 2. I wonder how Cole feels about it?
    • eagles4ever05
Hopefully mad enough to win game 3 for us
    • EazyEagleZ
I hope you are right. He will have the home crowd behind him.
    • DeJack_10
I really hope they beat the Yanks. They beat my Angels. Anyway, I can definitely see why they went with him for Game 2. Pedro begged the Phils to let him take the mound Game 2 and he has AL playoff experience behind him. Lets hope that translates to a win for the Phillies.
    • Pedro is VERY familiar with the Yankees...I don't think its a shot a Cole.
    • Spotella
      Placard_complete_small
I agree with you here, but what does Pedro have to do with Witherspoon?
    • DeJack_10
^ Both Philly newcomers... Lol. I see what you mean though. Lets get back on topic.

I thought Witherspoon played better than any of us expected for a fist game. While I am still very excited about the trade, I think he will not only improve, but will have a direct effect on how Akeem Jordan plays. Jordan has been playing pretty well so far this season, but with another fast LB added to the mix, it's looking like we will have a nice 1-2 combo with our linebackers. Very fast defense now that Witherspoon is on the field.

Macho Harris. I think everyone's perception of a FS is what we had with Dawk. Yeah, he's not exactly the biggest "playmaker" in the universe (yet) nor does he lay the wood and knock ppl back into their previous life. But...

Macho does provide excellent coverage on the back end. He is a big reason why our CB's have so many ints on defense. Quarterbacks are obviously NOT throwing in his direction. The only "big play" I remember Macho surrendering was against Kellen Winslow who made a fantastic catch. Sure, Macho is probably not going to be the "8th LB" but he is a sure tackler, has very good persuit angles and can chase down Darius Heyward Bey from behind. I'll take that any day of the week. Good/solid player who will only get better. I think you are people are underestimting his potential. Remember, he was a CORNER in college and this is his first stint at Safety. So far he's made a seamless transition and will only improve.

I don't know who the Eagles are lining up against TE's but apparently it's a scheme problem. Our linebackers had decent coverage most of the game and Akeem Jordans coverage on Chris Cooley was ANKLE BREAKING. HAHAHA (sorry skins fans ha). Our defense will steadily improve as the year progresses and our team might be dominating on D once the season begins to wind down and the playoffs begin. Be patient.

Our running game is still lacking. But before Westbrooks injury, it looked as if we were going to run the ball (and do it well I might add). We have 3 of our projected 5 starting OL from the beginning of the year. Stacy Andrews (baring any setback) should be 100% healthy in by week 13 and will stop rotating in and out like a yo-yo. Herremans had his first game of the year, and Peters is still pretty banged up. We have a MASSIVE OL and it will only get better. Trust me. As long as we can avoid the injury bug, we should be fine and have another shot at winning the Superbowl. Now is the time to go on a run since we are playing the NFC EAST. Let's kill the GIANTS.
    • Spotella
      Placard_complete_small
I do hope your last line comes true Latinferno. My biggest problem is the )-line, which I think ties into the problem with the running game. If the O-line tightens up our RB's should be able to do something big. I just hope this happens by next week. It has been shown the past 2 weeks that the giants record was padded by the lack of opponents so far this season. If the EAGLES play as well as the can/should we will have no problem, but if our O-line stays away again, we're in trouble.
    • hollywoodeagle
Very true on macho. he is not the same type of safety as Dawkins. But when you talk about bone jarring safeties I dont appreciate people forgetting about Wes Hopkins. He was as hard hitting if not harder hitting than Dawkins. i dont care what anyone says thats a fact. And he laid it on the line when the Eagles sucked. About the running game I think the line created some holes but I dont think McCoy has great acceleration or speed. He has good footwork but carries the ball way to loosely. he will lose the eagles a game with a fumble book it.
    • Latinferno
      Placard_complete_small
I haven't forgotten about #48. He was one of the better safeties we have had in Philly. I voted for him to start opposite Dawkins when they had the "Best Ever Eagle Team". If our linebackers can stay healthy, and with the addition of Witherspoon, we could have the best group of LB's outside of Evans, Small and Joyner.
    • hollywoodeagle
I agree latin. Veterans have value. The guy is at his peak right now. He may be better suited for outside but he was stout and around the ball on runs. He looks like he is in excellent condition. Strong.
    • bSchu92
Oh yeah did you see how massive spoon's arms were?
    • hollywoodeagle
He looked tough. No doubt. If you look at his salary he isnt junk. He commands good money and is worth it. You get what you pay for. Trotter is league minimum and Spoon is 2.5 million.
    • Latinferno
      Placard_complete_small
I think Trotter is going to make some key stops for us on defense vs the Giants this year. Look for him to be on the field when Jacobs is there. And off when Bradshaw is in (Witherspoon obviously). While Trotter will get more playing time, it will be tough to have him on the field vs Jacobs the ENTIRE game due to his lack of coverage skills. But if it gets near the goal line, you better believe Trotter will lay the AX for the first time this season.
  • Good ole Panama City Boy. Im just glad he doesnt have to play for a "Rams" team anymore. See Rutherford and St. Louis
  • I agree, That was a big addition to the LBs, lets see what he can do against the lil giants

i tell u what this guy gives us a great problem to have with all the talent were gonna have at LB come next season good lord man jordan stewart and witherspoon dang that sounds good and we'll have a healthy beasty oline i tell u what thew eagles are gonna be scary next year but this year i see us making it to the divisional round of the playoffs maybe the NFC championship IF were lucky and dont lose anybody else. but i telll u what DJ was the star last night that boy was sick YES SIR and maclin had a decent game as well
    • hollywoodeagle
I dont think Stewart will recover so fast and a bum knee at MLB isnt a good description on his resume.
    • Tblitz25
Witherspoon Plays WLB Bradley MLB and Gocong SLB unless we get another SLB that will be the LB situation next year. Spoon only plays W or M

    INSTANT IMPACT THANK GOD!!!!
  • Yea this is a good sign for sure... Btw anyone want the Eagles to trade up and get the safety from USC this year? That would be sick
    • bSchu92
Ah yes. Taylor Mays is an ANIMAL. or Eric Berry from Tennesee
    • DeJack_10
Ah! It would be sick to get Taylor Mays. But what would happen to Macho? I suppose going back to corner???
    • Latinferno
      Placard_complete_small
I highly doubt that will happen. We are suffering from the poor play of our offensive line and they can't stay helthy. Shawn Andrews has played a game and a half over the past 2 years. And who knows if he will ever be able to play given his back problems. Stacy Andrews is still healing from his knee surgery so the verdict is still out. I'm tired of OL who can't push the pocket and create running lanes. Give me the best interior lineman in the draft and I'll be happy. We also need a pass rusher to start opposite Cole. If Babin/Abiramiri/Clemons/Parker can't step up their game.

I would suggest a vet at linebacker, and let Gocong hit free agency (I think his contract will be up). Not sure who might be out there, but NOW I think Andy realizes the importance of having a good LB who is already NFL savvy. The Patriots were very successful with vet LB's and I don't see why we don't follow the same mold.

As for Macho, I think he will be fine at FS but it never hurts to add competition to the mix. A little early to ponder next season since we are in week 7 of the NFL. But I guess not too early to guestimate who might be available. We might even consider adding another good RB since Westbrook won't be here much longer and McCoy has been OK but not as impressive as I would have hoped.

I have always liked Taylor Mays, but have you guys not been watching USC this season? He is the majority of the reason that their middle D has been getting thrown on as of recent. He has been biting on PA, and seems to have lost some ball instincts. There was a segment on College Football Live today, and dude is getting BURNED..Plus, no way we go safety in 1st rd. We will either go OT/C/G or DE...
    • hollywoodeagle
latin. thats a good point. Eagles havent valued linebacker until they didnt have one. I think good linebackers add a great dimension to this team. Spoon is like a big Ike Reese and if Jordan keeps improving and we get a veteran next year for or a top flight rookie all of a sudden we got something here. Quality depth. Everyone dogs Gocong but he might be a good replacement for Bradley in middle. he has speed ,size and is physical. from time to time he seems a little lost out there but he is learning too and continues to be closer to the action.
  • hollywoodeagle
Looks like we might have a sideline to sideline MLB. It was impressive.
    • hollywoodeagle
Oh and by the way, the eagles had to dig into their wallets for him. Proves that if you want quality players you have to be willing to spend. I think front office knew the defense was dead in the water without linebacker help. It was a must to get spoon to compete this season.
    • apollokid
      Placard_complete_small
He is due to earn $2.5 mil this year...far from "digging into their wallets" lol. That # does jump to $5 next 2 years, but who knows if he will still be an Eagle. I hope so, but we'll see.
    • hollywoodeagle
but apollo there are a lot of $900,000 players out there. im going to research LB payroll. Be back
  • DMcnabb4MVP
I am replying to your blog, per your request. lol

I have to admit that the trade for Witherspoon didn't excite me at first, especially since we had to give away Gibson to make the deal happen. But, if he continues to play like he did during Monday Night then it may just be worth the trade.
    • apollokid
      Placard_complete_small
Gibson wasn't even active on gamedays. He would have never played in Philly. I don't understand how people are so upset over losing a promising slot WR. ESP for the player we got in return!!??
    • hollywoodeagle
Im not at all. But he was impressive in preseason. oh thats right preseason.
    • DeJack_10
Lol. My bad DM, for the repost. Its just that my post wouldnt appear. Even when I refreshed it. (Still hate the new YB format, btw)
  • Zukny1
In Fantasy football, I told someone to start the TE going against the Eagles, because I figured he would have needed more time to learn the game.

The fact is, the man came in there and was awesome! I am totally cool with giving up Gibson and a 5th round pick for this guy. Plus thinking next year, Where do we move him?
    • hollywoodeagle
Im not convinced he should be moved. When he gets pushed around I might change my mind but right now I say he stays. Any thoghts on that?
