THE AXE IS BACK!!!!!!!!

Yesterday, Eagles head coach broke the news during his weekly radio show on 610 WIP, that he had brought in four-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker and former Philadelphia Eagle Jeremiah Trotter for the second time within a week.

Initially there was speculation out there that the only reason Trotter was brought in for a workout was because Andy Reid was simply doing Trotter a favor and that there would be no further pursuit of Trotter after the first workout.

But after the news of not only a second workout but a physical by Eagles doctors which was reported by ESPN's Adam Shefter last night, Eagles fans got wondering and hoping if all these reports were leading to one of the most beloved linebackers in recent years returning to the Eagles?

Well, fellow Eagles fans I am happy to say that according to many sources Trotters workouts not only looked good for a guy over thirty, but they looked good enough to land the Axe-man a contract, on a team that almost never signs players over thirty years of age.

That's right, according to Foxsports.com, the Philadelphia Eagles and the "Axe-man" Jeremiah Trotter have agreed on Tuesday to a one-year deal with Trotter getting the league minimum.

As I stated previously, Jeremiah Trotter is 32, and he last played football in 2007 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shortly after the Eagles let him go.

"They said I looked like I was in great shape." Said Trotter after last week's workout. "I told them I've been working out and training. They knew I have visited a team this off-season and I was staying in shape. I told them I could help them out."

And so the Eagles brought him for an evaluation.

"They said I did a good job. I looked light on my feet. I looked quick and had explosion." Trotter said.

Trotter said that he was very excited, not only to get a chance to play in the NFL again, but to have that chance with the team where he had so much success at and where it all started at; the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jeremiah Trotter was drafted by the Eagles during the 1998 draft, shortly after being drafted he became a popular sports figure in the city of Philadelphia, loved by all Eagles fans, young and old alike.

But he burnt a few bridges when the Eagles only offered him the franchise tag instead of the long-term contract that he desired in 2002. He refused the tag and shortly thereafter signed with one of the Eagles rival teams, the Washington Redskins.

Trotter never achieved the type of success in Washington that he had in Philadelphia. So the Redskins cut Trot two-years into his seven year, 36-million dollar contract.

In 2004 he found his way back to Philadelphia, but he would have to earn his wings all over again. Reid did not care what he did prior to that season. So he started out as a back-up middle linebacker, while also contributing on Special teams.

Jeremiah eventually made it back to his old starting middle linebacker position, overcoming former starter Mark Simoneau. Prior to Trotter getting his old starting job back, the Birds were among the worst in the league at stopping the run. But once the "Axe-man" took the position back over again, the axes started flying and the Eagles became one of the best teams at stopping the run. The contribution made by Trotter was one of the most important in helping the Philadelphia Eagles win the 2004 NFC Championship and appear in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Currently the Eagles are 15th in the league and run defense. So it goes without saying that Andy Reid hopes that with the recent signing of Trotter, he may be able to pull-off a similar act to what he did in 2004, taking the birds run defense to among the tops in the league.

It is unlikely that Trotter will regain his role as starting middle linebacker yet again, and at the same time it's not as highly UNLIKELY as you may think, the position right now is paper thin and other than Omar Gaither, the rest of the players who play middle linebacker are either battling injury problems or are too young to manage the position as well as Trot could.

I am not saying expect Trot to come in and raise hell and take the position back like he did in 2004. But he still can be very, very useful to this team in so many ways.

Great move Andy, thank you!
