Witherspoon. Could he secure the MLB into next season?

Looking at Spoon on the field he looks like a strong 240 to 245pds. I think fans are basing their judgement of Witherspoon being a permanent fixture at MLB based on his weight. I dont believe that Stewart Bradley owns the position. A bad knee at MLB is major disadvantage when playing that position and if Spoon continues at this level I dont see any rationale for moving him next season to the outside. Byron Evans wasnt big and was probably the best MLB I can remember watching in an Eagle uniform. Gocong has almost the same physical sttributes of Bradley he would be a a safer choice upon Bradleys return. But give me your thoughts on moving Spoon.

I loved watching Witherspoon last week, he showed himself to be a hard player, but I need to give it a little more time before making a decision on where he should be.
  • I think Spotella thinks he's Andy Reid....lol "but I need to give it a little more time before making a decision on where he should play"

They said when they brought him in that they will use him and middle and outside backer. You can't just toss Bradley to the wayside... he's a talent and is more suited for the middle backer role, Witherspoon seems a little more versatile, but he really did have a heckuva first game.

When Ray lewis entered the league they said he might be too small at 235. the result?

      Will Witherspoon isn't Ray Lewis.

I don't think anyone is saying he just can't play middle because he is too small. But going into next year, you want your most talented players out on the field. If Bradley is one of the most talented, he will have middle because he can't shift over and Witherspoon can. Whose to say Witherspoon can't be just as successful outside?

Witherspoon is actually better on the outside. That's where he played in St. Louis.
    • BWestPhan
Yes, I know he played outside there. The post said that if he plays better than Bradley, and I was saying he could be just as successful if not more on the outside and pairing the two together would only make the team better.
  • DMSUPER5
No. The real question is whether Witherspoon can challenge Gocong's spot.

Also, Witherspoon's natural position is on the outside. Whereas, Bradley has always played in the middle.

Why should we fix what isnt broken? Bradley had a incredible year last year... I agree with DM leave things as it is and move Spoon to the outside.
  • Jordan Bradley and Witherspoon would be my move. Then I'd let Gocong try to become the DE opposite Trent cause he has the talent.

Gocong is to light for defensive end. I guess we have a ways to go with spoon. But if the defense gets better I could see him taking the position from Bradley. Like dejack says if aint broken why fix it.

I'd like to hear your logic behind Gocong being "too small" to play DE... Cole, one of the best pass rushers in the league is 6'3" 270 lbs and Gocong is 6'2" 263. Gocong is already listed as a LB/DE on the team's roster and he was drafted as a DE from Cal Poly, I think he'd do just fine if he made the transition.

I like bigger DE thats all. I believe you need bigger ends for better durability. Using a rotation system only goes so far eventually you need that one guy that can play a full game and impact a game. Cole has gotten better vs run but he was at first a run defending liability. There is a reason Gocong isnt a DE now. I think he should stay at linebacker.

we should get a big ass DT and have a 3-4 d to put on the field with gocong and jordan outside and spoon and bradley on the inside. as for our base 4-3 bench gocong and put spoon there.

This is Philly. 3-4 is not their style. bad idea.
