ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION.

THIS team needs a psychological make-over. Before you bring in junkyard dogs, you need to move out all the chihuahuas. None of the guys I suggest moving on from, are what we Philadelphian's would call "emotional leaders". We not only need those leaders, we need a locker room that's filled with guys who would respond to that leadership. The fewer cold fish we have, the more likely that we'll see a re-emergence of the pride, intensity and toughness we've been lacking these last few years.

Time to move on:

DE Victor Abiamiri (I walk around clutching a fistful of confetti waiting for the day)

DE Juqua Parker

DT Trevor Laws

FB Owen Schmitt

OT King Dunlap

QB Vince Young

WR DeSean Jackson

WR Steve Smith

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guys to re-sign:

DT Antonio Dixon

DT Derek Landri

G Evan Mathis (I think we can upgrade here, but he's excellent depth)

RB Ronnie Brown (Once they draft a guy, THEN they can cut him)

48 Comments:
  • Getting rid of Jackson would be subtraction by subtraction. Also how come Andy Reid isn't on your list? That would be the greatest addition by subtraction. If the players are soft look no further than the coach. Also Asante Samuel needs to go. Who needs a playmaking corner who no longer makes plays?
  • I didn't mention Samuel because I think he's on a greased slide anyway, so I left that dead horse where it was.

I think the players are soft not only because of Reid, but also the image that the F.O. wants to project of the players on the roster.

They like the idea that they've got upstanding citizens who build houses and playgrounds. Like Jimmy Carter.

That's nice to have I suppose, but when was the last time Jimmy Carter punked anybody?

  • Then the truth is it's an organizational matter. Ray Rhodes may not have been the best coach, but one thing is for sure he wasn't soft. When Reid had JJ his defenses weren't soft. Reid has abandoned his roots on defense. He wastes time protecting the players. He needs to stop thinking about his kids and trying to be an accepting father to these players. They need discipline. It's his job to instill that into them.
  • De$ean Jackson looks like he'll be franchised after all.

Unless they trade him prior to camp, this can only be looked at one way:
    JEFFREY LURIE BLINKED FIRST.

So much for the "right terms". If they give him a $9 million dollar raise (over this last season),and don't get any takers in a trade, they are effectively stuck with him...on HIS terms. Until next season if they sign him to a long-term deal, or are forced to franchise him again... or let him walk with Lurie's 9 mill for 1 year.(smh)

  • To be honest the Eagles have screwed themselves on this one. How can you get fair market value on a player who you think isn't worth very much? On top of that Jackson isn't going to give any team looking to trade for him a discount. Franchising Jackson gives him a 9 Million dollar raise which is fine in my opinion considering he's been severely underpaid for sometime now. We'll see if he's capable of playing up to his new contract and if he is the Eagles would have let a great young talent just walk away, because they wanted to be cheap.
  • U don't get rid of ur good players n keep junk. Keeping Ronnie brown over desean is just stupid. Good teams have talent everywhere. How many good WRs r on the packers saints hell even the giants. Keep desean replace the crap like Cooper behind him with a better player in the draft. Sign LT for a cheap backup role he is ready for or bring in someone like Steve slaton who has something to prove and plays the style of play we coach plus he's from here. Add talent let dogs go is how good teams r built.
  • If we replace a 30 year old RB, it makes little long-term sense to replace him with a 32 year old back. I'm no longer on the Steve Slaton bandwagon either.

I would rather they pick up a young guy, or sign 27 year old Le'Ron McClain as the answer to replacing Schmitt/Weaver, AND Ronnie Brown in one sweeping motion.
  • i just thinkn LT is a better fit for our offense and knows he is a back up. slaton plays the same style as well plus he was in my sisters grade in high school n always hit on her. too bad that didnt work out stupid b!tch anyway back on topic. mcclain would be a great pick up but i dont see it happening so im going to focus on other players i think might. would take McClain over all but im trying to look at players i think they would target.
  • The funny thing is Smith was bad last year, but he was still hurt. He stole money from the Eagles (money they could have used to give to Jackson or to sign Burress), but I get the feeling Smith will be a much better player next year for some other team.
  • I mentioned 12 other players in this post, but all the responses are about De$ean Jackson. He wasn't the reason we were 8-8, and he won't be the reason we improve. There are still 52 other players to discuss.

So, what about the other 11 guys I mentioned?
  • Wait, Ronnie Brown did get a mention, but I wouldn't keep him OVER De$ean as they play 2 different positions. Also I DID suggest that Brown's stay here be conditional.
  • i only said over desean cause the money wasted on a high priced back up can be given to desean. i also said replace cooper, could do so with plax but we shall see. i been pleaing my case for schmitt but coming to think why pay a guy we dont use? he is a poor mans weaver. he can run block catch break tackles everything u mentioned about weaver in ur other post. and the rest i agree on. why bring up players we agree on? that convo ends in two posts. so i guess i would bring back schmitt. he is alot better than the stuff we had before weaver and isnt as bad as people act. people were just use to weaver really quick n think all FBs are FB/HB type players cause of weaver n mcclain sharing big years together about the same time. keep Desean and schmitt. bring in plax n slaton (who may still be use to the way schmitt blocks) and then go all defense. lots of good LBs out there alot of them better than Kirk Morrison who i agree would be a nice pick up himself
  • I like Morrison because if they draft a MLB high, I want to see him start soon. The better LB's out there will cost more and that'll invite the Eagles to try getting their money's worth, keeping the young guy on the bench. I like a cheap mentor who's mostly sitting by week 9. It worked well with Pederson/McNabb. I think a similar approach could work well here.
  • only problem i see is we need more than one LB. i say go after lofton, dan connor, or david hawthorne. all 3 start for us, can play middle or outside and only lofton will cost alot. the mentor situation would be nice if we didnt need to fill more than one hole. if we get one of those players or maybe even two then draft a guy like hightower or burfict we will finally have alot of talent at LB something we have always lacked and then we can get rid of players like akeem jordan and others who dont play
  • seriously how is victor abiamiri still on the team? i feel like to tell graham to look at his future. i think graham should be playing in a 3-4 OLB rusher role. dont think he is fit for DE
  • Understanding that Jackson had a bad season (yet still out gained every other Eagle receiver), yet I still don't get how anyone could view the departure of Jackson and replacing him with an unproven (so far disappointing) prospect is an addition. Desean isn't an old player so it's not like his skills are declining. All teams must account for him while he's on the field while Cooper disappears in one on one coverage. I still see him getting out muscled for that ball in the playoffs. What's next? When Shady McCoy starts asking for money we are suppose to think Chad Hall would be a better running back?
  • ha ur right the way people r acting is like they believe chad hall is as good as shady
  • Now you're just being ridiculous.

Chad Hall is punt returner who Reid keeps trying to invent roles for. He's a feel good story for the organization, that's why he keeps getting cut and coming back. He's Brian Finneran all over again.

  • Ridiculous? Implying that Riley Cooper is a better option than Desean Jackson is just as absurd. Here's a fact. If the Eagles were that confident in Riley Cooper they never would have signed Steve Smith. After all they had Jackson's replacement already on the team right?
  • I think they did. I think they see that too, now. remember when they announced that he'd be WR coach Culley's offseason project? There was no way to think that last summer because Riley didn't play much (or practice with the One's much) in his rookie year.

If they don't grab a Colston, or a Bowe, their options are Cooper and Avant. Avant won't spend the offseason in a coaches pocket, so you do the math.
  • why not keep desean n sign burress? both players r better than cooper
  • Burress or Moss may come here, but Jackson will be traded. (Why is this so hard to see coming?)
  • i dont think anyone is saying it isnt coming. i know im saying it SHOULDNT happen u were making a case before that the team is better without him. that is why i argue we r better with him n SHOULD keep him. i believe EZ is doing the same
  • One more thing. Chad Hall isn't a punt returner. In fact he isn't a game changer in any way shape or form. Very similar to Riley Cooper in that aspect.
  • That's weird, because according to his employers, (on THEIR website on the Depth Chart) he IS a PR.

In fact in the final 3 weeks of the season, Hall returned SIX punts to Jackson's ZERO.

Seems he TOOK a job AWAY from someone, doesn't it?
  • cause desean has been doing PR less n less maybe? the coaches didnt want him to get hurt doing something that a role player should do? desean said f*ck it why should i me n hall make about the same let him do something? plenty of reasons for that happening. if u seriously think hall is a better punt returner than desean u r insane. oh maybe the coaches wanted a chance to have a return n not have the ball punted out of bounds? this one makes pretty good sense
  • It's clear Flip has a agenda here. I don't know what Jackson did to him personally, but he is going out his way to try and make this point. Now he's trying to slant it as if it's the Eagles decision as if he doesn't feel this way, but he clearly does. How can anyone blame a player for wanting more money in a sport where the average player plays for three seasons and the organizations rarely honor contracts is beyond me.
  • An agenda? Really? Before I do what, cut him myself?

Slant it as if it was the Eagles decision? It WAS the Eagles decision! Or do you think I have some pull with Andy and the coaching staff?
  • Didn't say he was better, I said he was OUT THERE.

But I will not continue to argue this point. When Jackson is traded on or before draft day, suddenly everyone will forget me, and be mad at the Eagles, for doing yet another thing I KEEP saying is going to happen.
  • So I fail to see how a guy who is OUT THERE is in your words and ADDITION over Jackson. To be honest I don't care if they do trade Jackson, BUT if they do trade Jackson the replacement ACTUALLY SHOULD BE AN ADDITION AND NOT A SUBTRACTION. If not you can bet Andy Reid's days as head coach would be numbered and that is something I know will happen if they don't upgrade the position.
  • Read every word on this page and you will not see anywhere that I called Hall anything like an addition or improvement over anybody. In fact I called him a "feel good story".

It was you and 20Dawk that started in with the Chad Hall talk. I personally doubt that a guy listed at THIRD STRING PUNT RETURNER will make the roster next season. Like I said, he's the new Brian Finneran.
  • u said he took his job. to take someones job u r assumed to be better at that job than the person u r replacing. in other posts u or hollywood have said cooper n hall are better than desean i believe it was u. no one is saying he wont be traded we r saying it is better for the team to keep him. u wont continue to argue this point because once again i have proven u wrong. u did the same thing last time we talked about this n were ogna for a couple days until u came back with some more threads about it.
  • You haven't PROVEN anything. You can't PROVE an opinion.

I won't keep arguing the point, because 1)Even if you WERE right about who is and who isn't better the Eagles don't agree with you and Jackson is leaving because of that fact; and 2) I want to start working on this years THE 12 list.

Fact is, I don't think much of Chad Hall as player, but there is also no denying the endless stream of on-team auditions that took place this year, excluding Jason Avant, who the Eagles already have lots of film on.

I made the point MONTHS ago that Andy Reid's job was safe because you don't bench a starting WR (@Arizona), then not rush back your starting QB, then bench that same starting WR (New England, 4th quarter), if you're desperate to churn out wins. The auditioning continued unabated until Week 17.

On that Chad Hall TD against the Redskins, Maclin and Jackson were both on the field, split wide (Jackson to the right). Vick NEVER looked at Jackson as a endzone option. He looked left and threw the ball behind a Maclin clear-out route to Hall. He NEVER even LOOKED at Jackson. That says something, whether you know it or not. Couldn't be a pre-snap read, because your hero EZ says Vick doesn't know his playbook. If it wasn't a read, then it could only be a judgement call based on TRUST. To hell with Hall, Vick NEVER even LOOKED at Jackson because he didn't TRUST him. Instead he threw the ball to a covered man who scored on second effort because he ISN'T a soft player who can't get open without 30 yards of field in front of him.

And for the LAST TIME. YES, Cooper I think would be better for this offense than Jackson; and NO, Chad Hall isn't a big deal in ANY facet of the game football.

    I cannot make that clearer.
  • or maybe and this is a big maybe its a designed play for the slot guy?? desean has run this route i have seen d@mn near all our WR run this route except cooper. i have proven u wrong. before u said cooper n hall are better than desean now u dont. something happened to change ur mind. maybe me maybe something else all i know is ur view has changed. well atleast what ur writing has changed. what does reids job have to do with this? i knew all year he isnt going anywhere. u dont know if the eagles think jackson is better or not. jackson does have an agent who tells players to hold out n tries to do everything possible to get the most money. its no opinion that desean is better numbers show he is. being on the field more than cooper despite being benched shows he is better. being able to do everything he has on the field shows he is better. i will bet u anything cooper is not the starting WR for the eagles this year unless an injury happens to the real starters whoever they r.
  • oh n i guess i made u a little upset even though u wont admit it. i kept it to football n u gotta bring in ur made up personal feelings. funny
  • OMG! A Nickelback fan! Says a ton right there. LMAO

Dude I'm not upset with you. Why would I be? Because you like De$ean Jackson? LOTS of people like De$ean Jackson. One of them is even a friend of mine. Okay, I apologize for the "hero" crack. It wasn't related to anything previously posted on this page, so that WAS me on a late hit.

It's just a football thread. Now that the trolls are gone, there's nothing worth catching emotions about on here.
  • Who the hell is a nickelback fan? I typed hero in YouTube n it was either this or Enrique inglasias or however his name is spelt
  • oh and i find it very funny that u try to apologies for one failed personal attack right after u fail on another. so what if someone is a nickelback fan? whats that gotta do with their view on football? shake my motherlovin head
  • Do you really think Hall is in the same league talent wise as Desean Jackson? Sorry but I don't see any team scared to kick the ball to Chad Hall. In fact if the Eagles put Chad Hall and Jackson back there at the same time every game Hall would get the ball 100 percent of the time. Does that make Chad Hall better? I think not.
  • I gotta say I can't wait for the next "Addition By Subtraction" thread when someone writes the Eagles will be better off with Dion Lewis and Chad Hall over Shady McCoy.
  • The upshot here is that everyone agrees with all but one name on either list.

If we can see it, then surely the Eagles can. Mathis, Dixon and Landri is not a tall order. Try to make a move (Le'Ron McClain) BEFORE inking Brown, and we're off to a good start with cap and roster space.
  • but why bring in mcclain? he isnt gonna be used that much. he isnt as good of a pass catcher as weaver was. for the price/amount of playing time we r better off bringing back schmitt n adding another RB who plays andys style.
  • I dunno, you seemed to agree with it just 2 days ago ON THIS VERY PAGE when you said: " would take McClain over all but im trying to look at players i think they would target."

  • I would love to have him if we would use him. He's a great talent but his skills won't be used in this offense it would be wasted money to bring in someone for his price. N I would rather look at players I think have a chance to come here. Say McClain gets 5mil a year we could give schmitt 1-2 mil a year n get the same numbers out of him. So why bring in McClain if he won't be used right?
  • McClain won't command 5 mil, not after the year he just had. He pulled in 1.5 last season and had a decrease in involvement as KC tried anybody BUT HIM as their primary ballcarrier last year.

If his figure is around 1.5-2 million and he's already proven he can carry the load as a running FB, I would go with McClain. I haven't seen McClain block in years, but (let's be honest) while we like Schmitt he's not exactly a great blocker either is he?

This one's a no-brainer (insert joke at my expense here).
  • schmitt hasnt blocked alot for us but i watched him alot in college n he would blow guys up. he did break something like 13 facemasks in college while blocking n i think a couple of his own on his own face. when he had the ball thrown to him he caught it n moved down field. i think he is under used n underrated. thought mcclain got a bigger pay day when he left baltimore but i guess not. either way for the amount we use a FB i think schmitt is the more likely of the two to be signed. having mcclain would be nice but i doubt it happens.
