Best Draft in 3 YEARS!

I like most of you.. was attached to the TV watching the DRAFT & ofcourse philadelphiaeagles.com for all the Eagles picks!

Personally, this has grown into my favorite time of the year for football. I truly love finding out what teams go after & the strategy that is involved in moving around in the draft.

Here are the picks:

1 12 Fletcher Cox DT 6-4 298 Mississippi State **LOVE IT**

2 46 Mychal Kendricks LB 5-11 239 California **LOVE IT**

2 59 Vinny Curry DE 6-3 266 Marshall **LOVE IT**

3 88 Nick Foles QB 6-6 243 Arizona *who is this guy again*

4 123 Brandon Boykin CB 5-9 182 Georgia **SWEEET**

5 153 Dennis Kelly T 6’8 321 Purdue

6 194 Marvin McNutt WR 6-2 216 Iowa

6 200 Brandon Washington G 6-2 320 Miami

7 229 Bryce Brown RB 6-0 223 Kansas State **Love it**

The first three picks of the draft were clearly the best players that were left on the board! getting Vinny Curry @ pick 59 was just awesome! We are sure to have the best D-Line in football for yEARS To come!

The Linebacker group just got sickly talented! Demeco Ryans, Kendricks & Who ever else you want to start is going to be one awesome linebacker group.

WHo else feels that this draft was just Awesome as hell

  • I love the draft, also loved some of the UDFA signings. We got Tulsa wr/kr Damaris Johnson, Oregon CB Cliff Harris, and Wash RB Chris Polk among some other guys I hadn't ever heard of. Johnson has the all time NCAA record in all purpose yards, and was absolutley nasy on returns in college. He is stupid fast. Between him Boykin, hopefully we have our returner for a while now and NEVER have to put DeJack or insert scrub here back there again. Johnson had character issues due to basically being caught getting free crap from Macy's, but whatever getting free gear from a buddy that worked there honestly isnt that big of a deal to me.

Agree with most of your sentiments above, except also would like to add a **Love it** next to McNutt, but can you explain who is Bryce Brown? I hadnt heard of him, just looked up his stats but it looks like he barely even played? Any reasoning behind this?

I would have liked it if they took Burfict in the 7th or tried to sign him as an UDFA, but I guess Johnson is their "questionable character" guy for now. Burfict went to the Bengals where I fear his bad qualities may be allowed to flourish and cost him a career.
  • Bryce Brown is a former Tennessee recruit. He was the highest rated running back out of high school since Adrian Peterson. He was higher ranked than Trent Richardson who went 3rd in the draft. After Kiffin left for USC he transferred to Kent State to play with his brother, but for some reason he left the team. He is a low risk high reward guy. He compares to Ronnie Brown/Correll Buckhalter as a big guy who can do many things on the field. I think if the Eagles can keep his mind right he could be a sleeper in this draft. The Eagles running backs coach Ted Williams has had a fairly good run with running backs since Ricky Watters. He's coached up a lot of good backs since that time. He ran a workout with the kid and loved him. Here is a list of some of the guys he's developed:
    Ricky Watters
    Charlie Garner
    Duece Staley
    Brian Westbrook
    Correll Buckhalter
    Shady McCoy

Of course there is also the Darnell Autry types who failed to make it in the league, but he's been able to pick out some great backs for the Eagles.
  • I agree this was a great draft and I like many of the picks this year. I believe 2 of their guys are week one starters and at least 5 will be legit contributors early. I think the Guard from Miami can develop into a nice fill in guy. Not so sure about the QB and the Purdue Tackle. From what I heard about Foles is that he was a higher ranked senior at the beginning of the college season, but he didn't have a great year and some younger guys played better. I am interested in seeing him play.
  • Oregons Lamichael james now 49er and staying on the west coast
  • listening to philadelphiaeagles.com .. These guys *every season* talk like each player we got is the diamond in the rough don't they! lol

  • Yeah, but Spuds was somewhat skeptical of the young back. He didn't think the Eagles should have 3 young backs.
  • he was against the young back from round 1 on lol ..>He loves Dion Lewis for some reason!
  • love Lewis? The guy is hardly NFL material
  • Lewis lacks shiftiness for a guy who is so small. He's to much of a straight line runner and he lacks the ability to sense defensive players around him. Maybe he improves in this area, but he's far to small to run the way he does. He also holds the ball too loosely. I know he didn't fumble much, but I just don't like how he carries it.
  • Thats a pretty fair analysis. he isnt explosive either. Worse than chad hall
  • At least Hall can be shifty. I don't think Lewis is a lock to make this team.
  • I stll think they need a veteran RB. Plenty still available.
  • From their comments it doesn't seem like they play to get one.
  • They have a great draft followed up by stupid comments. Again, if you look at the additions vs subtractions the Eagles are dropping payroll & veterans. Im not impressed by the free agency the last couple years no matter how they spin it.
  • He's skeptical of a young backfield but young backs come into the league and are successful early on. Why can't McCoy be the veteran leader of the backfield group? Actually the kid from Washington (Polk, 5'11", 215) that they picked up as a rookie free agent could make the team if he is healthy (I saw someone comment on a blog that he has a degenerative hip but he denies injuries and says he is fine) . Supposedly has power and decent speed, catches the ball out of the backfield very well and sounds like he could have been an early to mid rounder if he didn't have medical questions. Pretty sure he must have stayed healthy all year last season because he finished with 1488 yards rushing and 12 TDs and 37 catches with another 3 TDs. Doesn't seem like anything is bothering him with those kind of numbers.
  • well I just watched some videos on "Shoulder Degeneration" I believe I have that issue.. lol. but man, doesn't look good for Chris Polk!

I mean.. he is going to tear his shoulder up playing football and he someday may have to replace his shoulder bone because of it.. the way it seems to me anyway.
  • Well athletes know they will be broken up when their playing days are over, but they don't care. They sacrifice the body so they can play the game. Most backs on average have three year careers so he has a little while at least.
  • We care! It's just that we truly get the Braveheart quote "All men die. Not all men really live."

My grandmother has bad knees and has never played a down. My woman's ex wears a back brace at 39, and he has never played a SPORT.

Time and wear catches up to all of us; but when some choose to chase what we love, it's not that we disregarded the cost, it's that we accepted the deal knowing full well that one day the bill would come due.
  • When you hear players like Urlacher saying he would lie to the physician to get back on the field to play tells me he care more about the money than his personal health. He's not alone. We all risk something at our jobs for money. I hear several athletes on the RADIO talk about how they didn't care and how they just wanted to play. Obviously if you don't play there is somebody else waiting to take your spot regardless of how good you are so guy risk it all to keep playing. They keep playing so the checks keep coming for as long as possible.
  • The Eagles had a very good draft. They added players that will play early or at least challenge our starters. Foles and the two linemen are the only players drafted that won't get a lot of play time assuming everyone makes the roster. So out of the 9 picks at least 6 will be able to contribute early. Cox and Curry are going to add to a already amazing pass rush. Kendricks will add a attitude to the defense and will tackle which hardly anyone could do last year. Cox and Kendricks could end up starting this year. I'm excited about Boykin he is a fast player that should become the slot CB spot and may be our returner he also played a little offense so that is also a plus. McNutt could beat out Cooper to become our 4th WR. Brown is a question mark he hardly played in college but the few highlights out there of him he looks like he could wind up becoming a steal. I'm excited about this draft class and think this is the best class in years.
  • I agree cox and kendricks will be on the field alot from day one. Curry will get reps and boykin will be returning kicks and punts?
  • Boykin could become their slot corner along with Hanson, eventually taking the job from him.
  • Why did Boykin drop?? People started talking about drafting him in the early second round!
  • I think it's because of his injury.
  • what injury? I also heard he has to "Grow UP" and i'm just not sure what red flags he has.
  • I thought I read he had a broken leg or something.
  • Found out, Broken Fibula .. still recovering apparnetly.
  • I think he will be ready by training camp though.
  • But i agree that we have too many young RB's. they will reach into free angency at some point and grab a veteran. there a alot of good ones still out there.
  • unless we just drafted a stud! And if we did, I think we keep all three: McCoy, Polk & Bryce watever
  • im not sure id say the best???
  • I read the Eagles plan to use Kendricks as a SAM. At just 5'11" I'm not sure I'd want him covering 6'4"-6'5" TEs. From the scouting reports I've read on him, Kendricks is best when he's able to attack downhill. Therefore, he would be best suited as a WILL.
  • thats what I think. He doesnt look 240 to me. More like 230.
  • I've watched the tape of him vs. Stanford and vs. USC. I noticed in the run game that even though he weighs in at 240, he sure doesn't play like it. He's a finisher.

The Stanford tape doesn't do him justice in my opinion. Then again, he was going against David DeCastro in a lot of that footage.
  • he is but is his sized exaggerated? Looks like a safety. Even at the combine they were calling him small. IDK. I have faith in Chaney but his injury could factor into all of this.
  • He can roll no doubt.
  • Meant to put my comment below, up here.
  • yeah, but Has the higheset jump, fastest speed, & is a great at wrapping up tackles..

Because of his other abilities I think he can definitely still do a real good job! & because of his height, QB's might not see him right away.
  • I said (yelled) the same thing when I read that. AT 5'11 Kendricks is perfect for the WILL because you can bring him on inside rushes and the guy would be almost invisible to stage 2 pass protectors until he was almost hugging the QB.

If they used him there he'd get a number of sacks where he "pushed" the RB into the QB. It would look like he ran through the RB, but in all honesty it's just because the RB would usually be too upright and wouldn't have the time to set his feet properly once he identified the blitzer. All the momentum would be with Kendricks. He'd have a nasty looking highlight reel for his career.
  • When you think about it there is only an inch that separates Kendricks and Chaney. I think they believe Kendricks is stronger and faster than Chaney. They also believe he will be better against TE's. Chaney is a liability in coverage and he isn't strong at the point of attack. That could be why they are planning to use Kendricks at the SAM, because he is a player who is fast enough to stick with the TE and strong enough to set the edge.
  • also, last time we gave up a 5'11 MLB he earned him self a nice little gig in Denver
  • he is stronger and faster but Chaney was not bad sideline to sideline. In addition, Chaney did assert himself and was highly visible during some games.
  • Chaney is a liability in coverage and he's not a player who is good at making tackling for losses
  • Before the draft, I told myself that the FO has to use their 1st 3 picks to give them some reps, this coming season. Just hoping this year's 3 picks, in Cox, Kendricks and Curry see the field and perform their talents at the next level. As with Kendricks saying, "Linemen can't touch me, RBs can't see me" attitude, I'd like to see him step it up in the NFL. He has some phenomenal quickness, but so is the NFL, add in the power of those veterans. Things like this should not be ignored coming out of college. If Kendricks plays SAM, there's telling how the coaches are going to use him, to his strengths. Cox and Curry will definitely be thrown into the rotation, both will have to learn to handle offensive linemen with new techniques, that comes with their strengths and quickness. Boykin should be able to see playing time on ST as a KR/PR, he has versatility as a CB on defense, and RB/WR on offense. I hope his injury are healed with weight room workout and limited stretch running and be ready by the time preseason starts. Polk, I'd like to see getting some reps in the preseason as well. Brown, hopefully he can keep his head on his shoulders, he's a gifted athlete, with high potentials at the NFL level. Foles, I'm not worried about, he won't have inexperience offensive line, he had at his SR year at Arizona. Strong arm but needs to work on accuracy and learn to understand his O-line strengths to protect himself better. Finally McNutt, he could shake up the defense, going up the middle and create mismatch with quick routes. I'm excited to see how much playmakers we'll see on both sides of the LOS, this season. I believe the FO did a real great job during the off season and the draft, I think it's really awesome.
  • I think Cox, Kendricks, Curry & Boykin are definitely all going to see the field quite a bit this year. Cox = best defensive linemen in draft, Kendricks = Would have been up w/ Keuchly if not for his height according to draft experts, Curry = A first round pick in many eyes, Boykin = Second round pick if not for the broken fibula.

TAKE ALL OF THAT and add in Demeco Ryans and this defense begins to look like one of the monster defenses in the league.. there is just nothing else about it.. Just AWESOME!

I'm not sitting here saying all these guys are Probowl talents, but our probowl talents on the defense now becomes: T Cole, J Babin, Cox, & Jenkins on the D line

Asomugha & DMC = probowl talents

    Demeco Ryans = Probowl Talent

That is 7 Probowl talents on the defense PLUS the addition of Kendicks who could be come one, Curry who could keep the Defensive line fresh & Boykin to play slot! OH I AM STOKED
  • With all those talents of 6 solid defensive probowlers, Demeco Ryan (MLB), J.Babin (DE), Kurt Cole (DE), N.Asomuhga (CB), D.M.C. (CB) and Cujo (C.Jenkins, UT), with the addition of possible rookie of the year in F.Cox (UT), a possible probowl prospect this season. Those are alot of elites talents, brought together to fortify the defense unit. Now with a Secondary coach of SB experience, as a player, Todd Bowles has some amazing talents to build probowl prospects, N.Allen, K.Coleman, JaiJar (J.Jarrett), B.Boykin, and Mychal Kendricks. Coach Washburn will work Vinny hard to give the kid a chance to make a name for himself, dubbed as a lifelong Eagles fan.

Coach T.Bowles, has strength in his experience coaching defense and the secondary. Coach Washburn has experience in HC at college level, and a premier linemen coach. Coach Castillo, was a defense coach in high school and college, pro offensive linemen coach and current DC. These Coaches have alot of experience, especially the strengths in each coaches abilities to be creative, with all the players they have and squeeze every ounce of talents, to use to their extreme potentials. I believe they're going to be similarities in the schemes, from the last 4 wins at the end of the season, but a tweak here and there to maximize the players strengths on the line and in the secondary. Question is can they stop our offensive unit? If there is any defensive unit in the NFL, that can stop our offense in the air and on the ground, that should be our defense.

There is 2 teams in particular, that I'm interested in, the Ravens defense and the Panthers offense, it's kind of a measuring stick pitting our offense against the Ravens defense, their HC John Harbaugh was Eagles defense coach. Ravens, imo, have a good solid defense and they attack very well in the trenches as well as in the air. Carolina has beef up the offense with weapons for Cam Newton, who is a dual threat himself. The Panthers could give our defense the test, they could've gotten from our offense. Panthers have deep ball threats, as well as RB and TE running routes up the middle and spreading our secondary for Cam to make a run. We'll see how creative both our units will match up against this season's opponents. Last year, I believe that we had it all, if u minus 30 percent of those awful mistakes we had, we'd be in the playoff. I'll say it this time, we have it all and few more. Can't wait for the gridiron to get underway. I'm really stacked, thx to our FO. Time for our coaches to get really creative.....
  • This team is truly stacked going into the season! If the Eagles don't make it far in the playoffs, then Andy Reid needs to go! Just way to much talent now w/ these draft picks, the trade for Demeco Ryans..

    Just so much talent now
  • Stacked?
