Chip Kelly and QB's

heres what I found today...

Chip Kelly doesn't need a fast QB January, 30, 2013 Jan 30 10:15 AM ET By Dan Graziano | ESPN.com The guys at the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News are doing a fine job of digging into Chip Kelly's coaching past for clues about how the Philadelphia Eagles will look with Kelly as their coach. The latest example this morning comes from the Daily News' Sam Donnellon, who went to New Hampshire to track down Ricky Santos -- the former New Hampshire quarterback whose success under Kelly disproved the notion that Kelly's offense required a fleet-footed quarterback to run it:
"Chip doesn't have to have a running quarterback," Santos says. "I said that to a lot of people who have asked me whether I thought Chip would struggle in Philly, whether he would have to keep [Michael] Vick in order to run his offense. You look how we did it: I would run for four or five big first downs in a game, but I would run in man coverage when I knew the situation."

Says Kelly: "He ran because they made him run. There's a lot of self-preservation in that."

The point, which we've discussed here a few times, is that Kelly's offense needs a detail-oriented decision-maker at quarterback more than it needs foot speed there. And when you look at it that way, you have to think it's even less likely that he'd keep Vick around, since details and good decisions aren't exactly Vick hallmarks.

Anyway, another interesting Chip Kelly read in Philadelphia this morning. Hope you enjoyed it.

  • Exactly the point. Mike Vick is a terrible decision maker. Even when he runs he screws up. He fumbles, and he doesn't know how to slide. When he's passing he often throws into double and triple coverage. Lets be honest. Is there anything about Mike Vick the guy who posted a picture of Milk bones on his twitter account that states good decision maker?
