HOW IT STANDS FOR THE EAGLES TODAY.

THE Eagles (it's off-season now, the all caps thing is at rest until preseason), go into the Draft holding 10 picks (1,2,2,3,4,4,5,6,6,6).

They're about to shed some weight in salary, as guys like Vince Young, Steve Smith, and Victor Abiamiri have deals that expire after this season. Add to that guys it's time to let go of like King Dunlap, Trevor Laws (made expendable by Derek Landri), Akeem Jordan, and Owen Schmitt. Toss in Evan Mathis's 1-year deal and you clear out about $10M on top of the $22M salary cap bump as it goes from 2011's $120M to 2012's $142M.

In a nutshell, the Eagles should have about $32M to work with.

Asante Samuel is due $9M this year and $11M next. If you can trade him and our 1st to say...Carolina, for the 10th overall and a 3rd rounder, his leaving clears space to pay for De$ean Jackson's replacement, sayyyyy Marques Colston, or Dwayne Bowe. The best part is, that that whole arrangement doesn't touch the $32M yet!

FIRST: Pay LeSean McCoy!

Draft a guy like Nigel Bradham. Then you go beef up the O-line (I like Carl Nicks). End it with a mad spending spree, grabbing depth to make the roster injury-proof. When satisfied, you announce that you'll open contract extension talks after Week 9.

  • We still have Vick Birdflipper and he was not good this year. This year was terrible for us. Now we have to watch the Giants play in the playoffs.
  • it's better then watching your team (cowboys)
  • Or you could just watch another channel. But that's too much like grown up behavior isn't it?
  • Romo, when i turn on my TV I get my local sports team coverage Eagles, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers and by the way i have to go watch the Flyers today in the winter classic so i can't stay laugh at you
  • The point I was making fellow fans is there is SO MUCH room for optimism for the upcoming season.

You all know I do the whole 'Pessimist, Realist, Optimist' bit. I'm in full on Optimism mode now.

With no OTA's and a short camp, this team took a bunch of new personnel, transformed an O-line coach into a DC with no stops in between, and still pulled 8-8.

Not what you wanted, but come on! You have to admit there is no doubt that this team got better, and has the fire power to keep getting better.
  • sign Jackson and then the optimism can begin. Until then its eagle business as usual.
  • Not sure what you mean. "the team got better". How do you figure?
  • A team that beat the Dolphins, Giants, Cowboys(when it didnt count), and Redskins(when it didnt count) got better? Not really a winning streak to base assumptions. Pretty lame if you ask me.
  • im sorry the Jets. even worse.
  • Flip, i agree even with the way our defense played we just had to many turnovers but thing are still looking up
  • the birds can be better than this year i think only if we bring back desean. no other WR in FA makes a defense set safeties as far back andd that opens it up for shady maclin celek avant and whoever else. bringing him back should be step 1. seems like it isnt gonna happen but i think he is more of a threat than bowe or colston. those two have different skill sets that we are missing and they would help particulary in the red zone but desean helps us more than anyone wants to give him credit for to get to the redzone. i think we just need to find a late round WR like colston was and pick him up. i wouldnt use a high pick on a WR unless desean is gone already and we can get justin blackmon who is gonna be the next TO attitude and all. i wanted vontez burcit or whatever his last name is cause he is a hard hitter and an emotional guy who plays with heart but he makes too many dumb penalties and he is late to the ball alot. first round needs to be a strong LB. i think thats obvious second round will probably be a lineman offense or defense, i still need to do some research on the players coming out this year but i think we should draft a LB and trade Asante for another. The CBs played alot better without him and Juan had them play more man and jam than soft zone and DRC looked grreat these last two games. second round i would like to see either a big DT to put next to jenkins and help stop the run or another CB. im tired of hanson being 5 steps behind the slot WR. since we have 2 picks get both.
  • With Antonio Dixon coming back from a triceps tear and not a knee injury maybe he can be the guy to put next to Cullen Jenkins. He certainly improved our interior run defense when Bunkley went down last season.

That would give us an interior rotation of Jenkins, Dixon, Patterson, and Landri. You'd be hard pressed to find better in this league.

You're dead on about the corners and you have been for weeks now. I mentioned a few weeks ago that the Eagles should roll the dice on Al Harris as a FS option to push Nate Allen, but he would also make for a NICE nickle CB.
  • Spags has been fired. I hope Andy can swallow the pride and make the call. It's the right thing to do. Juan is a great guy, but that doesn't mean he should be coaching defense for a team with Super Bowl aspirations next season. Get Spags in here and get him whatever he needs to make this a SB defense.
  • I agree with some of the guys on here that the Eagles need to look into hiring a DC with more experience than Castillo. Spagnuolo would be great but who knows if he would want to come back to a city where his assistants may be thrust on him and a head coach whose career in Philly may be winding down(although Reid's situation COULD benefit him I'm sure he will have his options). Although the defense played better the last 4 games it was against subpar offenses due to the QBs they faced. I'd rather the Eagles not go into next season with that kind of questionmark but if Castillo comes back I will root him on of course. I'd also love for them to get a linebacker and a RT (move Herremans back to LG were he has had much more success) in free agency or early in the draft and either sign Jackson or find a replacement and not just a body (and if Jackson leaves they need to also find someone to step in as a returner). They also have to think about who is going to take over for Vick and step in whenever he gets hurt which is almost a given after watching him in action these last two seasons. He also needs to start taking better care of the ball and better care of himself during games or next season will again end earlier than we want it to.
  • I agree with you in principal on Herremans. The only reason I leave him at RT is because there isn't a better option at OT out there this year. Teams are really locking down good lineman, and it seems the only way to get one is through them becoming a cap casualty (like Saints G Carl Nicks).
  • Sorry *principle".
    (Used the wrong one)
  • Either way would make me happy but I wouldn't be surprised to see them throw a small multi year deal at Mathis.
  • Jordan should be re-signed. With Mathis gone, I expect Herremens to move back to left guard.

The D-Jax situation is complicated considering how deep the WR free agent pool is. You have Bowe, Colston, Wallace, V. Jackson, S. Johnson, and Wayne. All of these guys are legit #1 guys. Hopefully that should allow us to get a good deal on Desean. If not, it is possible we could steal someone like Bowe or Johnson.

In the draft we HAVE to address middle linebacker. The best case scenario is Vontaze Burfict of Arizona State, who we would draft with our first pick. We will likely address right tackle with our second pick. Mike Adams of Ohio State is the perfect fit for us. Another hole is strong safety. Coleman is average at best. I don't like Jarrett at all. We should try and go for Mark Barron of Alabama. We might be able to trade Asante and a 3rd round to move into the second to try and steal him.
  • Don't forget that the Eagles also have Arizona's 2nd round pick willard. Let's hope that they don't turn one of their 2nd round picks into a half dozen fifth round picks. As much as I wouldn't mind seeing them go after a safety early I would think that they may not think it is a priority being that they used their last two 2nd round picks on safeties. We'll see in April.
  • I can see the Eagles going after Bowe or Colston to put a bullet in their redzone woes. In an average year Colston would be locked up by the Saints but with Drew Brees, Carl Nicks, Aubrayo Franklin, Tracy Porter, and Robert Meachem all hungry for fat deals; and Colston declaring "No hometown discount" last week, someone (maybe a couple someones) likely will become available.

Vincent Jackson is a head case. Steve Johnson actually blamed God for him dropping a pass last season (crazy). I like Wayne, but he's over 30 so the Eagles won't chase him.

Mike Wallace is MY DREAM WR! He gives you EVERYTHING De$ean Jackson gives you, but he's more physical. But I'm more likely to convert to Islam than Pittsburgh is to let Wallace get away. And I LOVE Italian (pork) cooking. So so much for that.

  • This post is about the Eagles.
This site is for Eagles fans.
I understand it's lonely being a giants fan, but if you want to talk about them you have to go where there are other giants fans if there ARE any.

Quick! make up some fake I.D.'s and spend 23 and half out of 24 hours pretending to be 6 or 7 other people.

When I get done getting laid I'll get back on here and read maybe 1 out of every 15 posts you make (At least I think that's about my rate.) Let me see: romorules, robbo44, phillyfan09, sleazybeaglez, lilfella, giantcack, exeaglefan, hollywoodeagle, sucker#1-12, and probably ten or more.

It's impossible to keep up with all of you, so I don't even try. I figure if I speak to one facet, later on you'll all meet for coffee and pass it along.
  • I'm wrong here. Do the O-line BEFORE Bradham.

We should be able to get him in the 3rd (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1619567/nigel-bradham ), although with where his workout numbers may end up, I would reach and grab him with one of the second round picks, just to be sure I had the firepower to carry this scheme.
