If The Defense Can Play Like This.....
I don't wish to overvalue the solid performance by the Eagles defense, because they were up against the Browns, but I have to say they were impressive none the less. They were tough against the run and tougher against the pass. Guys were making interceptions and swatting footballs. Babin was even playing the run. They really looked good overall as a defense. Now I know the offense looked bad... Okay they looked horrible, but I think some of Vick's poor play could be attributed to the fact he's rusty. I don't know what the future holds for this team or how much stock you can truly put into the play of the defense, but if this defense can find a way to play like that all season and assuming the offense can get back on track, they will be a legitimate super bowl contender. With that being the case Andy Reid needs to dial down all of these passes. Mike Vick has only played in 12 plays in the past month, yet Reid had him toss it 56 times. It seemed like the Eagles offense went 3 and out or turned the ball over the entire 3rd quarter. 20 Carries for McCoy and 56 passes for Vick is too much of a disparity. Reid simply can't overuse a player that hasn't played all pre-season and expect him not to look like crap.

I agree. They just need to shake out some things and the only prescription for that is more time. Now if they do this NEXT WEEK, that slow start I talked about...
-
I feel like Reid needs to use his run game much more than he did today. I can't see how they expect to win games with Mike Vick ( a rusty Mike Vick especially) throwing the ball 56 times. They need to find more balance in the offense.
-
I couldn't believe he didn't go to the run game. How many pics have to be thrown for him to get the message?
-
How many times will games have to be played like this before Jeff Lurie gets the message?
-
That was the worst performance by an eagles qb i have ever seen. Dick jauron has clearly figured out a way to not only beat mike vick, but make him look like a fool in the process. Teams from now on will be using jaurons blueprint for success and i question whether vick can figure out how to beat it. I would honestly feel better with trent edwards throwing 5 yard passes every play than with vick flying around out there throwing bombs. Just as i rooted for kolb to replace mcnabb and for vick to replace kolb, i am now rooting for edwards to replace vick unless we find out vick was playing hurt today or something.

Mike Vick has been figured out two seasons ago by the Chicago Bears. They were the first to figure him out, followed by the Vikings, and then on to the Giants who for 3 quarters owned him until he exploded in the 4th. It's been known for some time how to play Vick. The disturbing part is neither he nor the coaching staff have figured out a way to counter this problem. I still don't understand how Andy Reid could completely ignore one of the best backs in the entire league for a whole quarter. Mike Vick was clearly struggling yet he continued to call pass after pass. When will people stop giving Andy Reid a pass?
-
As for the defense, the biggest thing i saw was the dramatic turnaround of pur linebackers. They are worlds better. Ryans is the run stopping plug that weve been looking for since trotter left. Kendricks is just an all around stud. And jordan gets the job done. Our run defense was fantastic. Remember how ineffecient our d was in the redzone last year? Well today we dominated there, holding them to fgs or a turnover every time. Our d line was also superb although the penalties were frustrating. Drc asomugha and boykin might be the best trio of corners in the league. And our safeties dis their job, not allowing any big plays.
-
I agree. Now we have to see them do it all against a quarterback who isn't starting his first NFL game and a rookie runningback who is hurt. Oh and by the way play for the Cleveland Browns.
-
They need to design plays tyo run Vick and stop the straight drop back 56 times. No imagination is gonna get Vick killed.
-
I'd say the putrid showing on offense is about 50/50 for who's at fault. Vick had 4 INTs but I counted at least 4 more that probably should've been picked. There were also throws across his body and into double and even triple coverage. Those are throws that even a pee-wee level QB knows not to make.
The playcalling was once again abysmal. What else is new? Reid could have Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders in the same backfield and he'd still dial up 50+ passes. If anything, I'd want Reid fired just so I can watch Shady do his thing more. The guy is a top 3 back in this league and his talents are being completely wasted due to Reid's asinine playcalling. -
im not even sure i would call that spectacle a football game
-
GangGreen you make valid points. I have a hard time seeing Reid surviving this season if he continues to waste a talent like McCoy.
-
Not only Shady. They kept 4 rb's.
-
I agree.
-
You clowns gotta be kidding me. Legitimate SB contenders? Vick needed to throw 56 passes to beat the Browns in the waiting moments. Yall need to stop listening to Birdflipflopper or at least allow him to clean yall eye wear so yall can see what millions others saw. The Giants played better in defeat than the Eagles in their win. So take off those rose color glasses.
-
That was a pathetic display. If Cleveland had a real QB that scrub squad beats the Eagles. DEmaco Ryans and Nate Allen looked decent. Some positives on D but they played a piss poor Cleveland offense.
-
I'm not kidding myself sucker. My post is of my own thoughts and have nothing to do with the flipster. Tell me something. Did you believe the Cowboys weren't super bowl contenders last season after they got handled by the Eagles the way they did? How about a few seasons back when they lost to the Cardinals and Romo broke his pinky? This is week one dude they have a lot to work on no doubt about it, but I'm not ready to concede the division to the Redskins, because they beat the Saints. Nor am I ready to concede the division to the Cowboys who beat the Giants WHO BY THE WAY LOST TO THE REDSKINS TWICE LAST SEASON.
-
I agree. I think they might show up for the Ravens. That will be a real test. I expect Marty will have Vick on the move. I still think they need some size at the WR position. Plax!
-
I would take Plax too as you know, but I don't know if he would have mattered in this game. One thing Willard wrote and I think is true. Vick doesn't need to be the ultimate playmaker on this team. They just need to let him get the ball quickly to his playmakers in space and let them do the work. Everything doesn't have to be a bomb or nothing.
-
L. Weaver was a physical presence. Im not sure I care what position as long as they have one. Dont get me wrong McCoy is runnin great and has a ton ability but I am certain that he will not fair well all by himself against a punishing D. Our Ol looked small and really not very athletic. Dunlap is a complete liability because he is forcing the eagles to use a man to help him out. I think they may be better off moving Herreman back to LT. The OL has to move this year. That was a cornerstone of the Colt offense. They werent big but could pull and hit. This OL looked downright confused.
-
Shady will be fine. He owned the 49ers defense and they were second against the run last year. He crushed the Cowboys and Giants defense last season too. The Giants hate him, and he still owned them. No Shady isn't my concern. His coaches lack of understanding when to use him is a concern along with the turnover happy quarterback Mike Vick. Those are legit concerns right now.
-
Peters was a big reason he was successful. Make no mistake he will take more hits this year.
-
I get Peters had a lot to do with Shad's success, but Shady averaged 5.5 verses the Browns without Peters. What has Vick done so far without Peters? Two injuries and a complete meltdown on the football field. Bigger concern Mike Vick.
