LANE JOHNSON HINTS AT THE STARTING QB.

HOW often do Right Tackles go #4 overall? While I'm sure it has happened at SOME point in the past, for all intents and purposes it just isn't done.

You draft a LEFT Tackle that high, because he's the guy who will protect your Franchises's blindside. Pass protectors go higher, run blockers lower. This is fairly common knowledge and I'm not shaking the world by saying it.

They already have a run blocker extraordinaire in Jason Peters, so that left them needing a pass protector. With that the Eagles drafted Lane Johnson #4 overall in April.

And now my point.

Whether Johnson lines up at LT or RT during the first 11-on-11's will tell you which way Chip Kelly is leaning in the QB competition. It won't tell you who WON, or who WILL WIN, but it will tell you who the coach is pulling for. (At least at the outset.)

The reason for that is simple. Reps. What is the coach trying to get the players used to? What are they rehearsing the most? What are they emphasizing first? In the limited time they have, flipping the Offensive Line's orientation to make both QB's comfy won't be possible without doubling up on everything and running the players into the ground in the August heat. Not to mention monkeying with the chemistry between Peters and Evan Mathis, or throwing off their muscle memory.

I'm sure Johnson will see time at both ends, but keep an eye on where he lines up MOST of the time.

  • I don't think where Johnson lines up will matter. Peters is the LT regardless of who starts n Johnson right. The line was just that bad last year that we needed to upgrade and by drafting a RT we killed two birds with one pick. Herremans was crap outside n Watkins sucks. We move Todd over n Johnson in then the only major whole is center. Having a starting qb does allow for better chemistry with the line though. It's important for the line to know where the qb will be n what he will do in certain situations.
  • There's a reason that a team's LT nearly always makes more that it's RT. That reason is pass protection.
  • Well peters makes more and will for some time, so that would indicate foles or Barkley.
  • Come on 20, Peters is also a vested veteran who came over here and got a superstar's contract, whereas Johnson just had to pull teeth on language in his rookie deal. Let's be real here.

But how YOU interpret what's going on is your right.

    This post is MY take.
  • AS I SAID!

Lane Johnson has been switching between Tackle spots but so far ONLY when Peters can't practice. As for normal, he plays RT.

The Eagles are prepping Johnson for when they go back to a righty. Mark my words, when the Eagles start a right-handed QB again, even if Peters is still here, they will almost IMMEDIATELY switch Johnson's side. Provided he can play, Johnson is the future. That's why you draft him 4th overall.

So far the O-line logic is paint-by-numbers. It's 1-2-3. Even the Herremans move. My GUESS is with Vick starting Herremans becomes your BACKSIDE (pass blocking) Guard like he was next to Tra Thomas, so the thinking may be that his run blocking won't be such an issue. I doubt that will hold water, but the proof is in the playing. It'll be interesting to see how effective McCoy is (YPC and 3rd and short conversions) from November and on, when running to his right vs. his left.
