Like It Or Not The Eagles Are Better With Foles.
Let’s first start with your comments about the players who have been compared Foles to in “Dave Krieg, or a Frank Reich, or a Brad Johnson.” This is a contrasting group despite what you think. Frank Reich a career backup shouldn’t be mentioned with the other two players. With that being the case let’s take a look at the best seasons of the three individuals here.
Dave Krieg: 57.5 Comp% 3671 YDS 32 TD 24 INT 40 Sacks 88.3 Passer Rating (Krieg’s 5th season in the league)
Frank Reich: 52.9 Comp% 2205 YDS 15 TD 16 INT 16 Sacks 68.9 Passer Rating (This is the only season the guy started more than three games! It was also his 12th season in the league.)
Brad Johnson: 62.3 Comp% 3,049 22 TD 6 INT 21 Sacks 92.9 Passer Rating ([Not So] Ironically his best season and most comparable season to Foles had lead to a Super Bowl victory. It was also his 11th season in the league. His 4,000-yard season for the Skins happened 8 years in)
Now Foles: 64 Comp% 2,891 YDS 27 TD 2 INT 28 Sacks 119.2 Passer Rating (This is his 2nd season….)
So these guys being compared to Foles took numerous seasons to do what Foles did in two. Oh and he did it with a rookie NFL Coach! Grizzled veterans had to crawl and scratch to do what Foles made look easy to do in two seasons. This comparison is a joke.
Now I will discuss your season comparison. First you’re wrong in stating, “under either QB we NEVER beat a playoff team.” In fact Foles defeated the Packers. Now I would surmise that Vick played the better playoff team in the Broncos. That’s easy enough to see, but that doesn’t mean Foles defeated irrelevant teams. He defeated the Packers, Bears, Lions, and Cowboys in meaningful games when the opponent was leading their divisions. He also defeated a 10-win team in the Cardinals who defeated the Seahawks in Seattle. Now are we to deduce that had Vick stayed healthy he wins these games? In what part of his 20/20 record for the Eagles could we even for a moment make such a claim? In fact I would suggest that if Foles were starting the Chiefs game we win, because Vick’s 3 turnovers, 44 Comp percentage, and 6 sacks were absolutely the reason why we lost.
Finally how about we actually look at the performance of the players discussed like I mentioned in the previous piece on the players and how their numbers got better once Foles got in.
Better yet let's take a player I didn’t mention in Desean Jackson. He caught around 50 balls from Foles, but what most important is he caught 7 of his 9 touchdowns from Foles. He caught them from all over the field too unlike when Vick played he was pretty much a scoring liability (like Vick too) in the Red Zone due to his size. Jackson’s 9 touchdowns were tied for the most in his career, but the seven he caught from Foles alone would have been second. Nick Foles down two touchdowns drove his team back in a playoff game in his second season to take the lead. His defense and special teams lost the game. Again if Chip Kelly believes a QB who completes 9 passes in a game will make his offense better then he better start packing now. He won’t last long in Philly.
