Bah Humbug Birthdays!

Today was my birthday. I hate birthdays. Seriously, I hate my birthday and I am definitely not a fan of my birthday. You would think I would be on top of the world today, glowing in the limelight being queen for the day, I’m not, for me today is just another Wednesday in November.  Other people’s birthdays don’t bother me but mine-I just don’t get it. It’s not like the day is actually different from other days. No one has ever made a big deal about the day I came into the world and my family is definitely not the “celebratory” type.  I have a friend who celebrates her birthday for three weeks. The week before, the week of and the week after. She makes plans with every one of her friends to go out for lunches, dinners, movies etc. She basks in the glory of her birth. I have never been able to do that.  Another friend of mine spends the day with her husband, he takes her out for breakfast, then they go to a spa, do some shopping, dinner and home.  It’s all very foreign to me. I have always felt guilty having people “do” for me. I love doing for my friends and have fun when its their birthdays but somehow it all feels awkward to me.  Today was nice in that my husband let me sleep in, he did my carpools (lucky for me my carpool days fell out on my bday this year! I will have to see if I can arrange that for next year) and he took the kids to swimming lessons which he never does.  Other than that I can’t say it was much  different from any other day. I don’t feel any different, except older which at my age sucks!  I don’t mean to be the Grinch of birthdays but unfortunately I just am. So please forgive me if I forget your birthday or don’t seem to excited for you- as Jerry Seinfeld said best: “it’s not you its me!”

  • Today is my Mother's Birthday. Happy Birthday to you.
  • happy birthday to your mom
  • Thanks.
  • Easy, I don't know how old your mom is mine is 82 and IM blessed to still have her and dad who will turn 84 next month, still living and doing well...
  • My mom is 77, my father will be 78. Both still here. They are about to move in with me and my fam. I glad my kids are going to be able to spend quality time with their grand parents.
  • Good to hear as long as we can keep mom and dad its great.
I have said to dad many times I'm really glad he didn't push sports on us kids dad came from a sports world family and mom didn't. sure mom in high school played volleyball and was a cheerleader...dad played football, basketball and baseball.
in fact our ex high school the samde one we all went to , won the state baseball tournament ,,dad played OF for the 1947 state champs , as Mel Allen might say"how about that"
  • My parents never pushed sports on us (I don't think they wanted to pay the money), but I was always a fan of all the 4 major sports. I played some football, and baseball when I was younger, but stopped when I kept seeing so many guys get seriously injured. I broke my ankle playing football. I saw a kid get paralyzed. That was it for me. I wouldn't ever push sports onto my children. Sports isn't for everyone.
  • agree, just as in playing a musical instrument, to get into the entertainment business, I think young people should not be pushed ,encouraged yes..
I quit playing baseball my freshman year, why no encouragement from any coach, no hey kell, come out next year you can play, lets work on things and get you excited about playing?
    Nope, nothing.
