Only the Eagles can make subtractions look like additions. Big HOLES

When you sum it all up this offseason was a bust.   Gone are Samuels & Laws and in is Ryans. You may not like samuels but he is a marquee athlete. I think if you look at this as a trade any normal team would not give up these two for that middle linebacker.  Ryans comes with some medical history and we are giving up two good athletes for a question mark.  This is just business as usual.  Other than Nhamdi last year they have jettisoned more than they have received year in and out.  Thats the real story.  They never had a dream team.  That was the front offices own theory.  A lot of good PR there.  Now they have what?   But remember the Eagles are the only team in the NFL that gets to draft.

Holes Holes and more Holes

Comments 1-100 (of 134):
  • Are you kidding? Laws sucked.
  • he was a serviceable DT. When he came off injury he was pretty productive and got some pressure.
  • Id like to see one more offensive move that looks like we mean business. Plaxico or Shockey? available RB?
  • I would not mind Plaxico, but I don't think Shockey wants to be a backup. I like Celek and the guy is a player. I still think the Eagles could draft a running back. I would love to see them draft a legit return man.
  • You can now stop whining Hollywood. The Eagles upgraded tackle by drafting Cox. That is an upgrade. Ryans is an upgrade. The Eagles traded a pro bowl corner and replaced him with a pro bowl corner. Your whining is unnecessary.
  • Looks like I'm gonna have to change my default.
  • Unless you become a Panther fan.
  • Like the pick
  • Hollywood this is the point when you actually make a solid comment about how your team filled a need. "Like the pick" is hardly a ringing endorsement after such a scolding post.
  • I wouldn't doubt that I could find a comment or two from you ripping Samuel and Laws in the past. Now since they aren't Eagles anymore you will change your outlook on them just like you did with Bradley. God only knows why you think a man who was given a 25 million dollar contract by the Cardinals and proceeded to play as poorly as he did is needed back in Philadelphia. The Eagles did great in the first round and got what many said was the top DT in the draft and with Patterson coming back from surgery it makes a lot of sense. I'm hoping the rest of this draft ends up being as successful, how about you hollywood? Of course not...you are surely hoping the Eagles fall flat on their faces just so you can have as much ammo as possible for your smear campaign.
  • This is you and Eazy discussing Samuel. Only added Eazy's comment because you never state Samuel's name but Eazy did:

Asante isn't the fall guy, but that doesn't mean they wont try to take advantage of his cushion like they have before. You can't ignore the deficiencies of a player or coach just because you like the guy.

No I mean the eagles. I agree with you about his coverage skills. hes better in a zone with a good pass rush. Honestly, he is highly overrated. I understood why Deon said he isnt a lockdown corner.

I swear to you this comment took me less than a minute to find. You called him HIGHLY overrated but now that he fits into your whining about the FO you change your stance on him. I would almost guarantee that there are probably worse comments by you about he and Laws but I didn't bother looking, maybe I will later. I can read you like a book, hollywood.
  • I stand by that. I do think he is overrated. But regardless, hes worth more than a 7th round pick and he isnt a lockdown or shutdown corner. Im only stating a fact he wasnt a Champ bailey or Deon Sanders quality corner. Not true?
  • You are looking at this the wrong way. Asante is worth more than a 7th. Nobody is denying that, but the Eagles couldn't get more than that, because everyone knew the Eagles had to get rid of him. A 7th round pick is better than cutting the guy and getting nothing.
  • There are always reasons teams have to settle for little or lessor value. The Titans settled for a 4th for a former Pro Bowl MLBer because of an injury and his salary. Don't you think that if someone was offering more than a 7th the Eagles would have taken it? Supposedly last year the Eagles wanted more than what the Lions were offering and a potential deal fell through. This year the Eagles practically put a for sale sign on Samuel that said "Will listen to all offers" and a 7th is the best they could do and the main reason was because of his salary of 21 million due over the next two seasons (and his age hurt his value also). They obviously were going to cut him if they couldn't get anything for him so a 7th is better than nothing.
  • *lesser value
  • **The Texans
  • I dont think samuels was a fit either but he added depth whether you like him or not. Im not sold on DRC. i havent seen enough of him. And I nver like giving up depth and athleticism for nothing in return. I just dont see how anyone can say "this is a good move". EZ Im asking you make a list of the last 3 years of additions and substractions it would be interesting.
  • Hollywood I'm not fully sole on DRC either, but I know Samuel no longer fit their needs. Sometimes teams have to move forward. It's all similar to the McNabb/Kolb stuff. I think the Eagles need to find out if DRC can play and if he's worth a longterm deal.
  • The bottom line is if he doesn't fit he has to go. How can we say it's a bad move to move on from a player that no longer fits the scheme? We don't fully know if DRC is the guy, but the sample size we got last season when Asante went down was positive. I know you weren't watching the games at the time (you constantly wrote that yourself) so you really aren't in a position to consider that.
  • Come on hollywood. Depth at a cost of 21 million over the next two years? You're a money guy...does that make sense to you? He wanted to start and in Atanta he will. Nobody likes to be pushed out of their spot and to be told someone else is taking your job, especially when it's a younger player that isn't as accomplished. He also isn't a slot corner and neither are the other two. Sometimes a move has to be made to clear up some cap space. McCoy and Maclin (and possibly Rodgers-Cromartie) will need new contracts soon. The Eagles traded for a second corner in DRC and when they had a chance to improve their secondary by getting what many at the time believed was one of the top two shutdown corners in the league in Asomugha the Eagles took advantage of the opportunity. They could now use some cap space and Samuel is the casualty. It happens.
  • I can agree with you on the cost. But lets see that savings go to good use. Lets finalize a deal with McCoy and lets get that player(s) that may not be a top tier free agent that gives us an edge for a long season. We need players that can punish people. Cox is a start. We need a RB/LB in that 2nd round and a Plaxico Burress to give us a multi dimensional approach. Lets grab a proven vet on D besides Ryans that can be counted on. Allen, babin, Rolle, DRC, Jenkins, Chaney & Jarrett can they be counted on? We dont have any proof yet. These guys a are a crap shoot. You might ask why I added jennkins & babin. Truthfully, Babin was a a run stopping liability. Jenkins ,was my call, but he stunk at times. He should be playing DE not DT.
  • The season hasn't started yet. Let's wait to rip them till we actually have a reason to.
  • You can say what you want but we are an impact player or two away from a superbowl as usual.
  • Offensively I think the Eagles are loaded with the starters, but are light on the backups. Defensively they have good depth on the line, but they are relying too much on young players at the linebacker and safety positions. Special teams could use a legit return man. I certainly would love to see an impact return man and maybe a redzone threat like Burress.
  • pretty much sums up my thoughts.
  • just stopped by to say....claiborne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • yaeh, nice pick too.
  • yep, nice pick too.
  • Great player and fills a need. Great pick.
  • I gotta give the Cowboys an A on that one.
  • Can't hate. Nice move by the Cowboys.
  • Freeing up 10 million on a guy who gave up more TDs than he scored with interceptions last year, to sign the best DT in the draft to replace a sub-par DT is a win-win. This should be a no brainer
  • Free ? whats free?
  • Loved the Cox pick yesterday, Now hopefully they can follow it up by selecting Lavonte David, Zach Brown, Bobby Wagner, or Mychel Kendricks.
  • Mychal Kendricks it is. Another good pick. So far so good. Quality and need. Nice!
  • I would go safety next but I'm not so sure there's a safety left on the board that's worth taking in the 2nd round.
  • Vinny Curry. Not a need but very good value. I think the Eagles are taking a page from the Giants defensive playbook. Washburn must be in heaven right now. I was pulling for corner Boykin (Georgia) to play the slot and return kicks but what can you do? I'm very happy so far.
  • Strange pick. Some veteran DE are going to get the ax. Not good fro Graham & Parker for starters but who knows.
  • Parker is already gone, hollywood and I doubt they give up on Graham this early unless they know something we don't about his injury (and that is a possibilty). I think Tapp will be let go. Curry was a top 5 DE in this draft in some mocks. Tapp or Curry, you decide.
  • Tapp never reached his potential. I didnt know Parker was gone. But now they have some serious size. Graham will make squad. Not sure why they let him play a few snaps at end of season last year and then he dissapeared. He looked big and strong on the few plays he got. I think the DL looks solid. I like Kendricks but not inside. WLB? Ryans, Chaney, Kendricks? Thats a marked improvement.
  • Yeah it is.
  • Dont get me wrong the guy looks good on film. BIG> finally
  • He really isn't all that big (6'3", 266) but they interviewed his defensive line coach on philadelphiaeagle.com and he said he plays strong and really doesn't need to get bigger. He will probably gain some weight in the NFL though.
  • Every rookie no matter the position comes in light. You usually start seeing them putting on muscle towards the 2nd or 3rd season.
  • Curry looks like a more Philly traditional DE than Babin & Cole. He has the NFC East frame. And thats the formula for success with Philly defense. Historically.
  • Not that big but his frame is and he will add weight. Im liking the DL alot. Good flexibility up front.
  • Washburn is like a kid in a candy store. He's got a lot of talent to work with. There are waves of guys capable of getting to the quarterback and he has guys capable of stopping the run up front now too.
  • 6'3" is good on the size department. That kid might be something special. He grew up an Eagles fan so I think he is going to work hard to make the team. The Eagles have a lot of lineman now. I can't see them keeping a guy like Tapp although Tapp does offer some versatility at both the line and as a stand up guy.
  • Im going to suprise you GTD. I am really very satisfied with this draft. Im giving them an A so far. I like the QB they grabbed and its not a threat to Vick. That actually was an endorsement of Vick. Just a couple two more pieces on offense and one on defense and this team has something. RB/WR/veteran safety. Allen will step up this year.
  • That actually surprised me.
  • I think there is a change in philosophy in this draft. These guys have bigger upsides than the Grahams, McDougle, Foukou and the Rolles. Kendricks is a small ILB but not small at the weakside. he plays downhill and looks quick. The lineman are clearly a change. i liked hugh douglass but he isnt the normal 260 pd DE. I think with Graham they thought they were getting another Douglass and they still might but that guy was a tight ball of muscle. Graham has that body type but hasnt proven he can maintain the physique.
  • The Eagles have said that they are thrilled with the shape that Graham showed up in a couple weeks ago. They say he has toned his body and came in a little lighter.
  • Kendricks was the fastest linebacker at the draft (4.45 or something close to that and he also benched 220, 24 times so he's also strong) and I have read that he is an excellent, explosive tackler. He was the Pac-12 defensive player of the year last year and played both inside and outside at Cal. Solid pick and as we all now, huge need.
  • I read he's great at penetration and getting to the quarterback, but it's a lot different rushing from the edge instead of from the middle. I think he was a solid pick. I still would like to see them get the return guy.
  • This was a super smart draft. I am speechless. Really. I have to believe someone other than Reid is making the final decision on this. because this is such a drastic reversal from Reids type of players. Size has now become a big factor on defense. But these picks have size and speed. An i think you will see a large impact in slowing the run on defense this year.
  • Now if they can compliment the offense with some help for Mccoy and Vick by getting some size at WR and RB or both Im 100% satisfied. i mean look worst case scenario during the season if some corner or safety goes down they can grab a vet thats been waived or whatever. So we dont need high priced additions just tough bodies.
  • I still think Burress is an option and I think he would be a welcomed addition. I wouldn't mind seeing a combo back to come in and spell McCoy. A guy who actually knows how to return kicks.
  • Cyrus Gray would have been nice in the 5th but instead they took tackle Dennis Kelly from Purdue (reach...the only guide I found him in was Kiper's and he had him ranked as his 38th tackle) which was the only ABSOLUTE disappointing pick for me. All the other picks were at the very least needs and most of them were value when they picked them. They got in order, the best DT in the draft who can collapse the pocket, a LB who is versatile with speed and power, a strong DE who was a steal were they drafted him, a big strong armed qb (another pick I'm not crazy over but you can't win them all and I have heard some decent things about him...hoping he gives me reason to like the pick), a fast slot corner who returns kicks, Kelly, a big receiver who can go after the ball, a guard that many mocks had going in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and a big back who never reached his potential in the college ranks. Seems much better than some of the reaches we saw throughout the draft last year...only time will tell but the Eagles did very well in my opinion.
  • I heard the Kelly was a 4 year starter and didn't get an invite to the combine. Nobody likes the kid, because he's 6'8" and looks less like a football player and more like a basketball player with slow feet. He probably could have been drafted much later.
  • watched lots of tape of kendricks and saw him in the combine. He has nice closing speed and was looking tough going to the sidelines. Reminds me of a smaller ray lewis. he will crack the starting lineup. This is entirely a different story than Matthews.
  • He's a higher pick than Mathews so that's a given, but I think he does enter the starting lineup. If he comes in and plays aggressive he could easily start for the Eagles. He seems like a three down player. that's something they have been lacking at the position. Still I want to see him out there before I start anointing him anything.
  • Now with Kendricks Matthews can learn and be an effective backup when called upon. That is what he is and could improve with patience.
  • I think that's what Mathews became by the end of the season. He was far more effective as a spell guy than he was as a starter. He also played special teams.
  • I agree. He just looked different at year-end. i dont want to speculate right now but I think I know why.
  • What you think the roids kicked in LOL?
  • Apparently they are still very high on Graham. They looked at him as someone who can set the edge. I hope he steps up and makes plays next season. I kind of think Kendricks is a little bit of what we already have, but he benched 220 24 times so that's not bad. I agree with you that Ryans, Kendricks, and Chaney are an improvement over what they had out there last year.
  • I said 6 months ago he would have a good season. he looked good in his 4 or 5 play season last year. Not a joke. i mean he penetrated and looked bigger.
  • Hear Washburn on the Eagles network. he said don't count Graham out. He must have some plans for the kid. I hope he does bounce back. He should have a lot of motivation to do so considering he's been labeled a bust by so many combined with how well JPP played for the Giants last season. Personally I hope he does step up, because Babin is such a one dimensional player that I can't stand seeing him start.
  • babin is a joke vs the run. Fact is he is a pass rusher only. On every play.
  • Babin has sort of become my least favorite Eagle. Yeah he sure did rack up a ton of sacks, but he was such a liability in so many other areas. I like his motor and I don't mind the sacks, but the guy has to do a better job of playing the run.
  • that is a solid group and you have solid backups that have been on the field. ill take it. I agree I think Graham can be a force vs the run game. Babins role will be reduced.
  • Cox and Curry are to put it bluntly studs. These are the Dexter manley, Clyde Simmons mold. And those are the guys that can win you superbowls.
  • I'm honestly glad you are happy, hollywood. I think the Eagles have done great so far. The defensive line should create havoc in the backfield. Last year's early picks were all reaches and Roseman admitted as much. It's nice to see them actually getting value with each pick. I'm not overly thrilled with Foles but after the first few quarterbacks every other one has flaws. Charlie Casserly had him rated as his sleeper at qb and said the Eagles should be able to coach him up. He's big and suppossedly has a strong arm so we will see.
  • I heard two different things about the kid. NFL network guys said he has "bad feet in the pocket", but they praised his arm. Andy Reid on the other hand said he had great feet, praised his size and compared him (body wise)Brady and Manning. I don't know if this guy can help this season, but I can't wait to see what he's got in training camp and preseason.
  • I watched his tapes. he looks a little sluggish in his drop and moving in the pocket but he does have a nice arm. he was hitting down and outs 15 to 20 yds no problem.
  • Ray Diddy said the guy "lacks touch" and he's not a fan of him, but he gets rid of the ball quickly. I just don't know enough about the kid to have an opinion of him, but from hearing him speak the guy sure does have a lot of confidence in himself. Who knows? He could be a sleeper/keeper.
  • I liked that pick because they have room for him and relives all the pressure of Vick watching his back. And if Vick & Edwards stay healthy this guy can develop.
  • I agree with you. This kid has no pressure to perform anytime soon. The have plenty of time to work with him. I think the plan will be for Kafka and Edwards to battle it out for the number 2 spot. Loser gets cuts.
  • looks that way. edwards will be a solid #2. he wasnt bad in buffalo
  • This was a very logical draft. I know Flip wanted that 330 pd DT but we now have large guys that can rotate at DE and if need be we can have 300pds straight across that line line. Jenkins, Cox, Patterson, Dixon. Thats not small and Cox and jenkins can play DE.
  • All very true. There is a lot of flexibility with this defensive line. They can send waves of talent at their opponents. I like it.
  • That is a surprise, hollywood. They need to come out of this draft with a returner. Brandon Boykin out of Georgia is a slot corner who also returns kicks and maybe with Samuel gone they will fill that need. They definitely could use an upgrade over Hanson (he isn't getting any younger or better). My first choices would have been Isiah Pead or T.Y. Hilton but the Rams drafted Pead in the 2nd and Hilton came off the board with one of the last picks last night (Colts). Pead could have been a great backup for McCoy and Hilton could have pushed Avant. DB, WR, RB and a lineman or two that Mudd could play around with would be nice.
  • I was thinking a veteran corner wouldnt be a bad free agent signing at this point. i agree, an injury at corner and we drop off quick. that was my only problem with samuels leaving. We are short at cornerback. i think the picks from 4 on are mostly special teams and longerterm investments. maybe they find a diamond in the ruff.
  • Boykin is an Eagle...I'm loving this draft. Need a backup for McCoy, a receiver to bump Chad Hall, a safety and hope he is diamond in the rough and a toy for Mudd and this will be a very strong draft.
  • I watched tape of boykin but he was a receiver but listed as a CB. Whats up with that?
  • I think he will play some slot for the Eagle. He's a guy who has played both in college so he's a versatile player and there's nothing wrong with a guy who can play many positions. This has been a solid draft.
  • Whats really interesting is that the Eagles are basically admitting that their defense both in terms of coaching and personnel was a mess. These are some serious corrective measures that are going to go a long way in adding quality depth. Now protect QB & RB and its on.
  • I think that's a good thing. I mean we all knew their problems and how they were so stubborn on fixing them. This season they have addressed those problems (at least they have appeared to address them) in this draft. I think some of these guys will pay off very early this season and I see their first two picks becoming starters by week one. Thats what you want out of a draft. Early picks paying dividends.
  • exactly. i think the eagles see the clock ticking on the whole FO and Reid. From a dollar and cents standpoint this draft will be expensive. They picked positions that generally are high paying. This draft will cost them and they didnt try to jettison payroll by giving away high picks to move around. This draft is a good sign and there are still many free agents that need to be looked at.
  • Well I hate to put it out there, but the trading of Asante has opened up a lot of cap space for this team. Hopefully they can lock up these rookies quick and pick up a key veteran or two. I like how they have addressed the return game this year too.
  • Did anybody catch Dawkins retirement ceremony? Dude is a class act.
  • Lucky you! He will be throwing out the first pitch. You get to cheer for Dawk tonight!
  • Marvin Mcnutt is another solid pick. A guy with good hands and willing to get the ball in traffic.
  • Hollywood I think Reid must have been reading your articles or something. Bryce Brown is the type of back you would want. Good speed and good size. Could be that backup punishing back you have been asking for. They Gut the physical receiver, the physical back, and the tall lineman. Apparently Reid has read enough of your complaints to change.
  • I am happy. They appear to be picking up the pace .
  • we scored big and I am very pleased that the Eagles FO addressed alot of areas. They have quality depth on the line and depth at linebacker. The secondary has good starters. i expect Allen to be the biggest suprise this year in the secondary. They will pick up players off waivers and free agency. The FA list is still large at positions of need so the eagles have more options.
  • Some of their undrafted rookies signed are also very talented players. They usually do well with the undrafted guys. They really picked a lot of value.
  • I saw the list. The eagles know they need a WR and RB. Interesting group
  • Sucker's School of Edification: Boys Draft Grade = A Solid {D}fense A Solid {A}ss Whooping Awaits The NFC East. Simplyfying Things That Matters Most!!
  • Reid admits McCoy played too much. You see EZ/GTD I told you. they need a second running back.
