SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

THERE has been a lot of debate about this incarnation of the Eagles. I also feel there has a been some misrepresentation of where I stand with a few things. So let me just set the record straight about a few things.

1) I didn't want who we got to be the Head Coach. I wanted either Vic Fangio or Gus Bradley. By the time we got this guy, Andy had been fired and hired by the Chiefs, and was long gone by the time we got who we got. While my ire has nothing to do with Andy being gone, it has QUITE A BIT to do with what we got as his replacement.

2) The coaching staff. It's mostly guys who coached college last year, with a couple of chronic NFL underachievers thrown in. This is the part where somebody will say that Shurmur used to be a HC; and this is the part where I tell "somebody" to look up EXACTLY what he did to EARN that job, and then take a guess at why his HC stint worked out the way it did. I STILL question why in hell they wanted him as the OC for this team. (If you already went looking up OC Shurmur's career, here is some friendly advice: Avoid looking into DC Davis's. Seriously. I'm trying to be humane here.)

3) I said that new HC should've been clear about what he was doing with his PLAYERS. Even if he hid his intentions from the media and the fans, he should have filtered the message out to his players. Word is that Jeremy Maclin came to the NOVACare Center a lot to work out in the offseason. I also read that he and the new coach DID converse at least once*. THAT was a perfect opportunity to get some details out. Unfortunately the HC squandered that opportunity. I said in February/March that with all the turnover, NOT doing this would slow the teams progress. Low and behold, that is EXACTLY what happened.

4) Players I'm keeping an eye on: Trent Cole and Todd Herremanns. If Michael Vick becomes the starter Herremanns will be the backside Guard, and won't be as responsible for being the primary run-blocking Guard. This is okay, because it means come November it may be able to hide the wear on his foot. If NICK FOLES becomes the starter, Herremanns is the FRONT-SIDE  Guard, and so will be responsible for being the primary run blocker. As that was never his calling card to begin with, the run game could see problems right out of the gate. (Remember that I said that.) Cole will likely sit behind Connor Barwin, with (I'm guessing) Brandon Graham on the other side. Cole is due 5.35 mil this year (with a 6.4 mil dead money tag), but he's too small to play 3-4 DE in this system. The Eagles are hamstrung by money, so he HAS to stay this year. They're paying him too  much to "bench" him, so even if he sucks at OLB he'll likely see significant time. But what does this mean for the development of Graham? I'm curious, so I'll be watching.

5) Player discipline. I think something should be done (not said), to send a message early. But hey! What do I know about a team spiraling out of control?

6) The QB question. The HC should have made a decision, but now he can't without looking like he caved to player/fan/media pressure. He said he'd likely name one by mid-preseason. Any sooner now and he loses face. I wonder just how "behind him" this team is yet. Regardless of how much or little they are, any weakness shown THIS EARLY will only erode that confidence. So we won't be getting a starter named any time soon without an injury to one or both competitors.

There you have it.
