Stay Or Go Defense Part 3: Defensive Backs.
Corner Backs
Asante Samuel: He’s a 31 year old cornerback who is soon to make 9 million next season. He is a guy whose game thrives off turnovers and only had 4 last season. He’s also begun to breakdown, missing games in each of the last two seasons. Finally his attack on the front office people during the season has already sealed his fate. GO
Dominique Rodgers-Comartie: Originally Andy Reid thought having three corners was a good thing. Too bad he misunderstood playing them out of position or against their strengths wasn’t a good idea. DRC had a bad season. He missed tackles, blew assignments, and got hurt. I think playing in the slot killed him. He wasn’t used to having to deal with guys having the ability to go to any direction against him. He flat out looked lost out there. Still the Eagles have invested a quarterback in him and they didn’t allow him to play his natural position. Not only that it’s hard to just throw away 4:2 speed with a guy his size. He will get another year to prove he will deserve a long-term deal. STAY
Joselio Hanson: Got lost in the sauce in the beginning of the season. He didn’t seem to fit the Eagles three new corner system, but the fact is he is their best slot corner. He may not be a big fellow, but he always seems to be around the ball. The Eagles were smart to bring him back. STAY
Curtis Marsh: I don’t think this guy is really a corner. He has stiff hips and little technique. He has to rely on athleticism and due to his lack of experience; the slowest but capable veteran could beat him. He’s been a project from day one. In fact I think if the Eagles keep him around it should be to transition him to safety. He has the body to play the position. He has the speed and some corner experience to cover man to man. Most importantly he has a better chance to get on the field at this position. The days of the big hitting safety are over with all the NFL rule changes. The safety position needs to be a playmaker. Marsh under the right tutelage could be that guy. STAY (But I think he’s a safety and not a corner.)
Brandon Huges: The Eagles like the kid, but I don’t know why. He’s a dime corner at best. GO
Trevard Lindley: The kid went from starting last season to off the radar the next. The Eagles already have a project in Marsh. I can’t see this kid staying. GO
Nnamdi Asomugha: Personally I was against this signing before it happened. I would have preferred the Eagles used the money to sure up the defense with a better linebacker and safety rather than to pay one guy so much money. When they decided to sign him I certainly hoped they would use him properly, but they didn’t and he has a subpar season. With that being the case I think he could bounce back next season and become dominant again especially under a Spagnolo defense. A year later and a gone Asante will make Nnamdi into a leader on this team. STAY
Safeties
Nate Allen: IS NOT A STRONG SAFETY IN THE NFL. Right now I’m not sure if he’s a starting safety in the NFL. He gets another year to see if he can bounce back from that injury, but he certainly should not be granted anything other than a chance to compete for a roster spot next season. STAY (But he’s on the bubble)
Jaiquawn Jarrett: It’s put up or shut up time next season for this kid. Can he play or not? He better be able to or he would have been a waste of a second round pick. If he and Allen falter that would mean in back to back years the Eagles brass wasted second round picks. By the way Jarrett IS NOT A FREE SAFETY IN THE NFL! STAY
Kurt Coleman: Not really that talented, but overall a solid player. He probably shouldn’t start in this league, but he can fill in a pinch. The Eagles could do worse for a backup than him. STAY
Colt Anderson: I don’t know if this guy can be a legit player on the defense, but this guy hustles on special teams. He’s often the first guy down on punts and sometimes on Kick offs. He should get a shot to play when he comes back healthy. STAY

The Eagles have a lot of young players in the secondary, but I am hesitant to write they have a lot of young talent. There are still many question marks about this secondary. Perhaps a veteran signing could be in order.
-
GO: Hughes, Lindley and Hanson. Samuel in the form of a Draft day trade package to move up.
STAY: (Normally there would be a ON HOLD segment here, but if I'm going to recommend booting 4 out of 11 guys, SOMEONE needs to be kept around to play.)
Anderson. A Special Teams beast!
Coleman. Combines Brian Dawkins' willingness to hit with Quintin Mikell's spotty coverage skills. Sad thing is we don't have better on the roster at the moment.
Jarrett. Can he play? Why did we see so little of him?
Allen. No better option on the roster.
Asomugha.
DRC. Should inherit the Samuel position.
Marsh. Still don't know what we got here.
That veteran signing: G.B's Al Harris to push Allen for hi spot at S.
-
flip Al Harris hasnt been on the Packers since 2009 he played for the dolphins n rams since that i would pass on bringing him back if those two teams dont want him
-
I like him as a safety and we need a veteran Eagle in that secondary with superbowl experience. cant hurt considering what Allen and Jarrett have done so far.
-
GO: Lindley(doesnt do anything
Hanson(sucks n is late n slow n gets beat n doesnt tackle good i could go on)
Asante (like flip said via trade but i would go for a LB instead of a pick)
Coleman( he doesnt do anything good n is late on every play to start fights, plus need to open roster space for another safety)
Stay: the rest for now
DRC n Asomo r the starting CB (DRC played great when he started for asante)
safeties should be Allen n Jarrett. i know neither has done anything but better than coleman, plus we need to add someone here in the draft or FA. i would try for laron landry in FA or add an injury prone Bob Sanders to help teach. -
oh ono hughes n anderson. hughes can play a bit i would try him in slot n anderson can just stay on ST n try to get better. he wasnt great this year sometimes i forgot he was out there but he is our best
-
I do think Asante will be traded, but understand he has little value. He's making a lot of money, he has an injury history, he can't tackle, he's getting up there in age, and his turnovers dropped off. The Eagles will be lucky to get a middle to late round pick for him. I would be shocked if they got a first day pick at all.
-
any team that plays zone will love to have him, especially if they have a sure tackling safety behind him. i can see a steelers type team trading for him. as in they play zone n have clark n pola behind him with. the eagles could get a LB from them n try to convert him to 4-3 n we all know how much they love to do that. i would rather we trade him to a 4-3 team and get one of their LB but the eagles always do something to make us question them. i doubt the steelers make the trade since they usually stick to draft but a team that plays the same as them could make the trade n give us good value
-
we should get stewart bradley back. I watched an arizona game and he was crushing people. he looked good. Is he available?
-
he is terrible n if u only watched one game n he was in u got lucky. him n kolb are ranked among the worst offseason moves last year n not for the eagles
-
It didnt look it vs the bears.
-
Bradley's best game (tackles) was week 2 against the Redskins (7 tackles). He only had 5 or more in two other weeks (actually 5 and 6). Besides that he had a max. of 2 tackles a game. Pretty unispiring hollywood! Why do you keep bringing up a player who got his big payday and disappeared? He seemed to be spending a lot of time on the bench by the end of the year and his last two seasons with the Eagles he was constantly banged up. The Eagles need to do better than another player they seemed to be right on when they let him walk.
-
Kolb is a bust and has a concussion problem. he makes a suitable #2.
-
Yeah Bradley stinks. People tried to tell me he was the savior, but if he can't even get on the field in Arizona he stinks!
-
Samuel's value is way down from last year. If you get a linebacker it would be to the value of like Goocong at best. Most teams know the Eagles gotta dump him. They can't afford to get too choosy.
-
Samuels- overrated and PR nightmare- GO
DRC- - good speed showed good atheletic ability- STAY
Asomugha- best player in the secondary by far. Not utilized properly but can play in the box or in man coverage. Trully a wasted talent last year.
Allen- the broadcasters love him and he started to hit in the final games. Stay
Jarrett- comes with credentials and supposed to be a hitter. Lets see next preseason if he hits anyone. Stay
Hanson- Shrimp, gets beat over and over. If not on roids hes a non factor- GO
Lindley- what happened. Training camp cut? Stay for a lil while
Anderson- love this guy. Is he good enough to start? Well he is a excellent special teamer. STAY
Hughes- Role player. Doesnt matter
Marsh- Role player. Doesnt matter
Coleman- Great insurance. Maybe the only player that showed up on defense game in and out. Just limited physical ability but reckless enough to intimidate. STAY -
CBs-Asomugha and Rodgers-Cromartie stay and start, Samuel traded, Marsh stays, I was glad to see Hanson go but with 1 of "the 3" gone he may have a spot next year...everyone else can be replaced...Safeties-Allen, Jarrett, Coleman (unfortunately he made more plays than anyone drafted higher than him this year) and Anderson for his special teams play.
-
Getting rid of Asante is a mistake. BIG MISTAKE! He is a top CB in this league for at least 2 more seasons & He is one of the smartest CB's in the league as well. He didn't get as many Int's this season, but I call that more of an issue w/ the CB coach F*kn up the Defensive backs then him.
The safeties are a tough decision (4 ) safeties & No Awesome/Elite Safety isn't good. I don't think the Eagles even take a safety in the draft.. But god I hope they take a LB..
Agh.. rambling here.. But, we will need J Jarret to step up big next season if we are going to be contenders. -
I get where you are coming from. Asante has been good no great for the Eagles, but they can't afford to pay him all that money and his skills are starting to deteriorate. DRC is younger and faster. That is his natural position. It's time for the Eagles to move on from him.
-
He gets burned quite often. He is a ball hawk but doesnt have catch up speed. he is a shrimp and almost useless vs the run. let him go.
-
I think it's time to move on, but he's been one of the few playmakers on this defense.
-
Yeah but i think alot of fans here underestimate the problems on defense. Other than a few scrub games vs less than.500 clubs our D stunk. This season was the first season I can recall so many arm tackling fundamentally flawed games. Other than some pass rush i saw a tremendous problem in pretty much every area of the D. Some fans think their is alot to build on but I think up and down the D roster its not looking real good.
-
They still need to upgrade the safeties and the linebackers. Those two positions need to be improved. The Eagles are better than the teams in their division, but they need to fundamentally improve their coaching. A good defensive coordinator could make a big difference.
-
Just bring in hitters and thugs. Enough with the finesse.
-
20Dawk got it right. I blew it out my --- with the idea of signing 37 year old Al Harris from a team he hasn't played or in two years.
How's this instead: Cincy's Reggie Nelson? He's 28, unrestricted, and he'd allow the team to slide Allen over to SS if Jarrett has to stay on the bench. -
Allen already is the SS and he really isn't one. I think he is far better suited to play free. I didn't like the idea at first, but maybe they should consider Landry from Washington.
