Ten Things The Eagles Must Do To Be Contenders Next Season.
The Eagles are coming off perhaps their most disappointing season in the Andy Reid era. That is because the team completely underachieved. They defeated one playoff team all season and only one team with a winning record. This was completely unacceptable for a team that started the season with Super Bowl aspirations. Needless to say there are several things the Eagles needed to do in order to become legitimate contenders, but I consider these as the ten things this team needs to accomplish most in order to be competitive next season.
#1) Get a defensive coordinator: Juan played the good soldier. He was put into a bad situation by being forced to use the wide 9 for the line and given substandard linebackers and safeties to try and make it work. Juan isn’t all at fault here, but his defenses couldn’t hold leads. His constant shuffling of players only added to the confusion. His lack of experience caused some of his veterans to question him. The Eagles need to let a Defensive Coordinator come in here and hire his own staff. They also need to get him talent capable of playing his schemes.
#2) Draft a linebacker in the first round: Something this team hasn’t done since the 70s is to draft a linebacker in the first round. The constant movement of the linebackers showed the Eagles are lacking talent at this position. Andy Reid has never drafted a pro bowl linebacker. There are some young talented linebackers in the upcoming draft that would be available where the Eagles will be drafting. No more drafting of lineman that never make the field in the first round or fizzle out after a few years in the league. Draft a linebacker Reid and save your job.
#3) Pay Desean Jackson: It’s obvious the Eagles will not pay for any of top receivers available in the pending free agency. To franchise Jackson would mean overpaying for the player. The Eagles do not have a valid excuse not to pay Jackson. He played on his substandard contract and made the pro bowl in his first two seasons for them. If the Eagles think they will just get by with Steve Smith and Riley Cooper then they would be mistaken. Just pay Jackson the money he deserves and move on from this mess.
#4) Get a real return guy: It’s time to stop making the return guy be a guy by committee. Jackson should not be the punt return man anymore and Dion Lewis was the worst kick return man since Greg Lewis. The Eagles could have gone after a few valuable return men, but they decided to once again place little value in the position. It’s a mistake they continue to make. Dion Lewis rarely made it to the 20 yard line on his returns. Jackson is better served at wide receiver than he is a punt returner. The Eagles need to fix this problem.
#5) Get a backup quarterback: No more reformation projects. They need a guy who can play. Its obvious Vick is going to spend some time on the shelf next season. That means whomever they bring in is going to start some football games. The Eagles cannot afford another Vince young debacle. The Eagles need a guy who can come in who they are confident can win games for them. I hear McNabb is playing semi-pro basket ball these days….
#6) Get Mike Vick back in the books: Vick needs to get himself right again. The offseason may have hurt him most of all, because the coaches were unable to work with him and get him into the film room. Vick needs someone working with him and showing him his mistakes. He needs the coaches to get him out of making the bad play. He needs them teach him how to throw it away when the play isn’t there. Mike Vick needs them all over him and forcing him to get better. Vick can’t be a turnover machine like he was last season.
#8) Mini-camp ball security drills: These guys hold the football so far from their body you would think it was radioactive. The players were terrible with protection of the football last season. Even McCoy (arguably their best player) held the ball way too far from his body even though he had only one fumble. If his carries increases then so will the hits he will take. He can’t afford to keep the ball so far from his body. The receivers also need to do a better job of not only holding on to the football, but they also need to do a better job of bringing the ball in. There were far too many dropped passes last season and too many tipped balls turned into interceptions. This team needs to cut down the turnovers in order to win in the NFL.
#9) Eliminate distractions: This goes against everything I have been preaching since week 5, but since the Eagles decided to stick with Reid, then they need to do that very thing. It would be a mistake for the Eagles to go into next season with a lame duck coach who could get any job available to him once he gets released. The Eagles should show him the commitment by extending him at least a year or two. An extension would eliminate the question of if he should be fired during the season at any point. A team focused on winning a championship should not have distractions like contract situations hanging over them. They also should trade Asante Samuel as soon as possible. Bringing him back would only add to the confusions from last season.
#10) Bring back the short game: The Eagles are giving up far too many interceptions. They either need to run the ball more or they must find a way to make their screen game effective again. They have had some success late in the season with the TE screen. They need to bring the 3-5 yard play back into their offense. Now that the line seems to be playing better I see no reason why the running backs and tight ends can’t be more involved in the offense. Every play doesn’t have to be a homerun. Moving the chains runs the clock and rests the defense.

This is as long as a Latin posts. Sorry guys.
-
It should be a long post. Details are important. In practice all you do is details. Game plans are all details. No reason why a road map to the championship should just be a drawing of an arrow pointing to a trophy.
-
Ha! Nothing wrong with "Long" if it is well thought out and good points. Well done EZ-E
-
Thanks bro.
-
i agree with them all big time on number 8 i been saying since they were all together meaning mccoy maclin jackson. they all hold the ball out far as hell. only thing i slightly disagree with is desean as a punt returner. he is great as one no one doubts that. its just hard to find someone better than him n i like to see himm back there. the injury factor is big though the chance for a big hit on him scares everyone but the threat of him taking it back i think scares the punter even more n cause them to punt out of bounds n give us better field position on a constant basis. i think he should only be used when we need him like he was in that giants comeback if i remember right n like bwest was
-
We are somewhat in agreement on Jackson. I would rather he were only returning if the game was on the line or something, but I think they need a guy who is capable of being as good if not better than him and capable of returning Kicks as well. There are guys out there who can do both.Brian Mitchel did both for years.
-
I think thats a smart way to protecvt your investment. Dont need another B. Westbrook type injury.
-
Jackson is a great return man, but last year he played it scared. The best returners are fearless.
-
Not only scared but stupid. Trying to make something out of nothing too often and losing yards, fumble on one return while doing just that (I think against the Bears) but he still is dangerous and I would like to see the Eagles have the option of using him if needed. If they can bring a good return man in during this off season I would be fine with them just using Jackson as a receiver but no more Reno Mahes. I can't take that anymore!
-
When I write I think they should get a return man Reno Mahe was not who I had in mind. I'm talking about the game changer/field changer type. I got sick of watching Dion Lewis return a kickoff inside the 20. It happened for most of the year, yet Reid kept putting him out there. He was hurting his own team, because he didn't put any credence to having great special teams players.
-
I knew YOU didn't mean Mahe but players like that are what the Eagles sometimes throw at us. When have the Eagles been lucky enough to find a player that was a stud returner without being a starter? Their best two returners since Mitchell have been Westbrook and Jackson. Besides these two they really haven't had much else in the Reid era (maybe J.R. Reed could have been that player...shame he had that off the field injury).
-
The Eagles usually try to make out on the cheep side with the return guys or plug in guys like Greg Lewis and hope they can do. They need to go get a guy they know can do it.
-
yea i hear u n sproles is doin it now think cribbs does both. would be nice to have but its not the biggest need i see just getting desean back is enough for me at WR maybe an upgrade over cooper
-
I just would hate for Jackson to get hurt returning punts. They need to find a guy that does both and use Jackson when they absolutely need him.
-
agreed
-
Brian Mitchell was one of my favorite Eagles. Great redskin player. i talked to him on the radio. Pleasant guy.
-
I don't know if I would call B-Mitch pleasant, but he is certainly real. Brian is going to give it to you str8. He's a good radio personality, because he doesn't pull punches.
-
Most of the things you propose make perfect sense. Thats the problem.
-
All very good proposals Eazy, nice post. The only thing I would change is that I wouldn't totally take Jackson out of the game as a punt returner. I'd still have him practice with the special teams and have that option if he was needed. He's too dangerous a punt returner to never allow him to do it. Westbrook was still called on even after he became a starter at times.
-
and he ended up with a season ending injury
-
I don't want him completely gone from it, but I would rather he were just focused on being a receiver.
-
Only if they bring in somebody that can return and not just a body!
-
That's what I believe they should do. They need to get a legit return man.
-
im not sure why anyone here ever thought Spagnola would work under Reid. They cant find any credible coach willing to knuckle under to Luries band of swindlers. If you accept the terms and understand the score your in. Otherwise , dont try to win without the FO permission.
-
We can sign Tulloch....shouldve done it last season, now can get another crack. -
He would be a nice addition to the defense. Did he only sign a one year deal in Detroit?
-
Yes he did Eazy. Let's hope Reid smartens up and makes a move here. Ray Didinger questioned whether bringing in a rookie (even a high draft pick like Kuechly) would be the right move for the Eagles this off season. An opinion shared by Tulloch who stressed the importance of having veteran linebackers when running the Wide 9.
-
I was kind of hoping the wide 9 would have been scrapped. I guess not. Well we will see how smart Andy really is next season. He blew his chance I hope his O-line coach can do the job this year.
-
Tulloch would be a good addition to the roster. He understands the concepts of the "Wide 9" and is still young/productive every down backer. Of course I have my eye set on Arizona States Vontaze Burfict:

And this his nasty attitude and defensive presence would put the Eagles back to where they belong defensively. This kid could be the next Ray Lewis with the right coaching. High motor and ultra aggressive. Penalties or not. I love this kid. -
And scoff as you might, if DE Mario Williams hits the FA market. Don't be surprised if we push for him. While Cole and Babin have been great this season (and past seasons) they are both getting up there in age. And we will probably have plenty of cap space when we trade Asante. Stay tuned!
-
Ill hold my breath
-
I wouldnt call either of them "great"
-
great players win superbowls
-
How many Super Bowls did the greatest Eagles player (in your opinion) ever win? How many Super Bowls did IFL player Terrell Owens win (pretty sure you called him great more than once). How many did Barry Sanders win? A player certainly can be great and not win it all hollywood.
-
Great Eagle- Reggie White
i would call Owens a very good player. Barry Sanders a different story altogether -
Way to dance around my reply.
-
Not dancing around your reply. But, only very few meet that great standard and the ones the Eagles had that met that standard won superbowls just not in Philly.
-
Last season you stated that McNabb was the greatest Eagle to ever play the game and now you avoid discussing him and state that White is great...that is dancing around my reply. There have been plenty of great players that just didn't get with the right team at the right time (it is a team game). Before free agency players were with the same teams for their whole careers barring a trade or being cut and being picked up by another team...you don't think some of those players on bad teams were great? What about players that helped get their teams into the playoffs but just didn't close the deal? Either scenario covers players like Anthony Munoz, John Hannah, and Bruce Smith. All Hall of Famers and considered by some to be the very best at what they did. Like I stated players can CERTAINLY can be great without winning a Super Bowl.
-
what about dan marino??
-
GREAT example 20dawk!
-
Not tested at the highest level.
-
isnt the nfl the highest level? whats higher? playoffs? he was in them. super bowl? he was in one just never won one guess he isnt great n shouldnt be in the HOF
-
Marino was a great QB like sanders was a great RB. But those examples are few and far between. The only Eagle that was "great" since Ive been watching is Reggie White. Do you know of any others?
-
Greatest eagle but great player. If he wins superbowl you can call him great.
-
Will you ever just type..."You got me", or "yes, you are right"? You are absolutely wrong here! Great players do win championships but so do horrible players when they happen to be on the right team. Great players also are just not in the right position at times or on the right team to win a championship!
-
Eventhough the Texans had a solid defense without him this past year, do you think they are going to just let him go?
-
no way mario will be back maybe even tagged if needed
-
I agree. in fact I think many of the free agents people are looking into getting will not be available. This especially goes for the wide receivers. That's why I don't get why so many people just want to get rid of Desean Jackson.
-
If the Eagle FO actions so far tell me anything it appears they are thumbing their noses to the fans. Juan is not going anywhere. no active seasrch is on for a d-coordinator. D-Jax is being ignored again. And now the whispers have appeared about Cullen Jenkins. This is not a road map to win a trophy. Teams that did nothing and the Eagles are one of them are making moves. But not Philly, they a have better ideas. My boycott will be intensified next year. We arent headed in the right direction. They are abusing their own fans.
-
Why do you take every move the Eagles make or don't make so personally? Am I happy that they didn't make a move yet for a better DC and may not at all? No, I'm not...especially with Reid not coming out and saying that Castillo is his man. Yes, it will annoy me that when he finally talks to the media he will have that same arrogant attitude and act like it was a no brainer that Castillo was ALWAYS coming back but we know better. IF he was positive he would have already talked to the media and wouldn't have left his guy hanging like he has...but it has NOTHING to do with the fans hollywood. I don't take it personally. The Eagles don't go out of their way to piss us off or "thumb their noses at us". They just don't always do everything right.
