January 09, 2014

WITH as much focus as DJax, Riley Cooper and the returning Jeremy Maclin have garnered in conversation this year, we've ALL forgot about one potentially game changing name on this roster:

Arrelious Benn.

If Benn can come back and contribute next year it would transform the offense in ways that should make LeSean McCoy's eyes water in anticipation. While Benn is fast he's never had a rep as a burner ala DJax. What Benn CAN do however is power out of tackles for extra yards, and get jump balls.

Lined up in the slot, Benn becomes a guy you MUST account for. Not with a zone, but with an escort and maybe contact at the line. That means a defender is pulled out of the box. Picture Shady with an easier time finding yards inside in 2014. Picture Nick Foles with a redzone WR. My guess that the TE's would also find it easier to find a hole in zones down the middle.

Benn or a WR who can do what he was known for prior to his injury, would make this offense even easier to execute next year.

  • He's gonna have to battle at camp and prove he's healthy and can play.
  • True. That's why I said "if" he can contribute. He has a different skillset than most WR's this franchise has had going back as far as 1989.

In fact the only WR we've had since then who was a threat to run out of a tackle was T.O.

Understand I'm not saying that Benn = T.O., I'm saying that a tackle-breaking WR has been so rare for this team, that we've only had our mitts on TWO in the last quarter century. And this second one was hurt prior to the first preseason game.
  • I get the comparison to TO. In no way is he on the same level but he has similar skill set. Tall muscular, good speed but not a burner. He's a baby TO. Let's call him TB. It would be great for him to come back and show something. If he can play the slot and we can keep cooper or maclin on the outside it would be amazing. The bad side is we will still need to bring back cooper n maclin since benn won't be able to show what he has until way after free agency. Maybe we get cooper on a long deal for low price give maclin a one year shot and benn can prove it then we won't have to shovel out the big bucks to maclin for his long term deal.
  • I agree with everything you typed here. And my god if he can play the slot, teams have to take out their base OLB and put out either their Nickel LB or a Safety. Either way they have a lesser talent at shedding blocks out there, which just means that things get easier for Shady from Tackle to Tackle. Imagine Shady having an EASIER time next year.
  • Benn. SUCKS
