The Numbers Don’t Lie: Desean Jackson Is An Elite Receiver.
Recently a list of receiver names showed up on the yard of players who are supposed to be better than Desean Jackson. I decided to put that theory to the test. The question is how does one measure Jackson against peers who are older and younger than he is? The logical way was to measure the lists great receivers against Jackson’s first for years as a pro and see how they stack up. I even hindered Jackson’s stats by omitting his return stats. Here are the numbers. I also gave Wes Welker some help by giving him two years, because he had zero stats for them. I did hinder Steve Smith for one season, because he got stats for one season and got injured. Considering every receiver has been injured in his career, I didn’t see a point in giving him another year.
Desean Jackson: 4 Seasons 229 REC 4085 YDS 21 TD 51 Rush ATT 378 YDS 3 TD
Miles Austin: 6 seasons 211 REC 3,294 28 TD 11 Rush 94 YDS 1 TD
Larry Fitzgerald: First 4 seasons: 330 REC 4544 34 TD 16 Rush 94 YDS 0 TD
Calvin Johnson First 4 Seasons: 270 YDS 4191 33 TD 18 Rush 156 YDS 1 TD
Dwayne Bowe First 4 Seasons: 275 REC 3768 31 TD 1 Rush 4 YDS 0 TD
Brandon Marshall First 4 Seasons: 327 REC 4019 YDS 25 TD 16 Rush 104 YDS 0 TD
Steve Smith First 4 Seasons: 158 REC 2196 YDS 10 TD 26 Rush 81 YDS 0 TD
Brandon Lloyd First 4 Seasons 128 REC 1875 YDS 13 TD THE GUY HAD ONE SEASON!!!!!!!!!
Andre Johnson First 4 seasons: 311 REC 3953 TD 17 TD 18 Rush 26 YDS 0 TD
Marques Colston First 4 Seasons: 285 REC 4074 YDS 33 TD 1 Rush 6 YDS 0 TD
Vincent Jackson First 4 Seasons: 130 REC 2233 YDS 16 TD 3 Rush 16 YDS 0 TD
Reggie Wayne First 4 Seasons: 221 REC 3109 YDS 23 TD 1 Rush -4 YDS 0 TD
Wes Welker First 6 Seasons (his first two he did nothing) 319 REC 3461 YDS 12 TD 6 Rush 65 YDS 0 TD
Mike Wallace is only a three year player so I decided to put his stats for three seasons against Jackson’s for three seasons.
Mike Wallace First 3 seasons: 171 REC 3206 YDS 24 TD 15 Rush 144 YDS 0 TD
Desean Jackson First 3 Seasons 171 REC 3124 17 TD 44 Rush 337 YDS 3 TD
Here is a list of how D.Jack compares to the named receivers in receptions, yards, and touchdowns in the first 4 years of their careers.
Receptions Yards Touchdowns
1) L. Fitzgerald 1) L. Fitzgerald 1) L. Fitzgerald
2) B. Marshall 2) C. Johnson 2) M.Colston
3) W. Welker 3) D. Jackson 3) C.Johnson
4) A. Johnson 4) M.Colston 4) D. Bowe
5) M. Colston 5) B. Marshall 5) M. Austin
6) D. Bowe 6) A. Johnson 6) B. Marshall
7) C. Johnson 7) D. Bowe 7) R. Wayne

9) R. Wayne 9) M. Austin 9) A. Johnson
10) M.Austin 10) M. Wallace 10) V. Jackson
As you can see Desean ranks in the top 10 in every receiver category when you measure him against his peers some have considered a greater receiver than he is at the same point in their careers, Desean Jackson comes out favorably stacked up against them. He doesn’t stick out as much as Fitzgerald or Marcus Colston, but he holds his own against the “elite” group. As a runner, Jackson blows every one of these so called elite out of the water. I chose not to list a top 10 here as Jackson tops the list in every statistical category here. The bottom Line Is Jackson does match up to NFL’s elite receivers. It would be a mistake to write Jackson off now, because he is younger than all of these guys, but one and he still hasn’t been paid yet. Does he deserve Fritz money? Well no as the lists shows he is in another league, but he holds his own in this list of players who are suppose to be better than him.
JUST PAY THE MAN!!
-
Desean Jackson has a bright NFL future. It would be foolish for the Eagles to walk away from a player still on his first contract. They need to stop playing and just pay the man. He's worth at least Santonio Holmes money.
-
foolish isnt the word. devastating
-
I agree. The Eagles need him payed and focused. They would be better off keeping him.
-
If they dont sign him and keep things as they are they are going nowhere. They would need a bonafide outside and inside threat not to mention the huge needs they have on defense. That being said it would be one more veteran on this young team that would be gone. They are running low on potential leaders.
-
Damn Eazy that was alot of reseach, did you get this from one source or put it all together yourself? Plus it doesnt factor in how he makes safeties play deep giving Shady a better chance of long runs. I believe Shady led the league in runs of 20+ yards, which of course had alot to do with him too, but having DeJack hold safeties back certainly doesnt hurt.
-
I did the research. I just wanted to put the assumptions against the facts. The fact make it clear. Jackson is a 10 receiver and he should be paid as such. Most importantly he should stay on this team, because like you have mentioned he makes the players around him in this offense better.
-
the gut is a big time talent and apparently the eagles want to disrespect their fans by trying to discredit a fan favorite. ther eagle organization isnt honest.
-
There are a lot of factors at play here. Most of them have to do with money. Both sides are at fault, but it's time for them to stop pointing fingers. They need to hash this thing out, and simply pay him.
-
both sides arent at fault. The Eagles FO is clearly not negotiating in good faith and dont think fans of other teams havent noticed.
-
That's not true. You see Drew came into the room talking over 10 million a year. They had no room for negotiating. Now maybe Jackson and his agent may smarten up some. If they come in at least with a number worth negotiating with, the Eagles will play ball. Drew can make negotiating difficult. That's why McCoy has hired and fired the guy numerous times. You think Jackson's contract negotiations are bad. Wait until you see McCoy's unfold.
-
yea thats alot of work good job and it does prove a point to a certain person on here who thinks miles austin is as good. he needs to be payed and he will be i just hope its by us. if not he will be going to another team giving our safeties hell everytime we play. imagine our safeties vs desean it would be a joke. im sorry flip but ur wrong about desean we need him
-
I wont say Austin is as good, but I was surprised how well he favored. I think he is better than I thought he was. Mike Wallace is going to be a beast in this league if he keeps up what he's doing. I don't think one player is bigger than the team, but Jackson simply wants to get paid. I can't knock a guy for wanting more money especially if that player is real good. If the Eagles let Jackson get away it will be a huge mistake. Unlike some of the other players the Eagles let got, Jackson is more than capable of hurting them in the future on offense or special teams.

Statistically Dan Marino was a better QB than Joe Montana.
Statistically Emmitt Smith was a better RB than Walter Payton.
The question is in big situations do you want the guy who produces, or the boogey man?
In theonly NFC Championship De$ean played in he had 6 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 62 yarder. That means the rest of the day was 5 catches for 30 yards. On the last play of the game needing to score, McNabb didn't have Jackson as an option did he? Had to throw to Kevin Curtis instead.
Top ten guys aren't regular season heroes who disappear in the playoffs. If that were the case then Tony Romo is a top 10 QB. He isn't. He's invisible when his team needs him. In playoff games and big must win moments the guy is CONSTANTLY exposed as a fraud.
How DID Jackson do in our playoff loss against a porous Dallas secondary a couple years ago? 3 catches 14 yards and a touchdown. Maclin? 7 catches 146 yards and a touchdown.
So what about those numbers?
-
I'm nit sure what you're getting at here. Dan Marino produced and he might have won 5 Superbowls if he were given half the talent Montana had surrounding him. Emmit also produced and won more championships than Payton. If you are implying Marino and Smith didn't produce I now understand how you think James Jett and Jackson are the same player. Speaking of him I considered adding him to the list, but I didn't wish to embarrass you or him. Of the receivers who are supposed to be better than Jackson only three of them have rings. You're argument is grasping for air like those defenders Jackson usually runs by.
-
WELL I CAN PLAINLY SEE WHAT YOU MEAN BIRDY. YOU SPEAK OF THE EAGLES SITUATION AND HOW JACKSON HASN'T DONE ANYTHING TO ELEVATE IT. for years fans yelled for a wr HERE HE IS AND THE RESULTS ARE SOMEHOW LESS THAN THEY WERE WHEN ANIMALS LIKE THRASH AND PINKSTON ROAMED THE EARTH! that fancy-dan chart up there won't put a single trophy in the case now will it. SO FAR CONCUSSION CENTRAL'S NUMBERS HAVEN'T PUT US IN ONE SUPER BOWL. FOOTBALL IS A MAN'S GAME AND DECLEATED JACKSON DOESN'T PLAY THE GAME LIKE A MAN. THE NEXT TIME HE BREAKS A TACKLE IT'LL SURPRISE HIM MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE! THE BOY IS SOFT I TELL YOU. SOFT!!
-
As the great Ali once said... "Your hands can't hit what your eyes can't see. Float like a butterfly sting like a bee." Jackson played a full season and it wasn't him who was one hi away from never playing football again. It was Vick. Stop the reaching. The Eagles need to play the man and let him ball.

-
Birdflipper i consider you a guy who knows a lot about football. Now with that said do you really believe romo gets exposed as a fraud in big games or does the o-line and defense get exposed as frauds in big games?
To me its pretty clear.
I totally understand though if you're just saying that for the same reason espn analysts say the things they do. -
Welcome back Monster.
-
I disagree with the quote that Marino would have won Five Super Bowls and he had only half the talent of Montana. First off Five Super Bowls is almost unheard of. America's team and the only team from Pennsylvania are the only teams that can be put into this conversation. Let me elaborate on the topic. Let's take the 1984 Miami Dolphins. Mark Clayton had 73 catches for 1,389 yards and 18 touchdowns. Mark Duper had 71 catches for 1,306 yards and eight td's and Nat Moore had 43 catches for 572 yards for six td's. They had a solid running game and the tight ends were solid also. I think if Joe Montana had the weapons that Dan Marino had he would have won eight Super Bowls.
-
For once an actual NFL comment out of you. Surprising.... Marino never had a running game and never had a solid defense. Neither Marx brother can hold a candle to Jerry Rice and I would take the Combo of Rice, Taylor, Jones, Rathman, and Craig over Duper, Clayton, and players to be named later. You can't realistically tell me you think Marino had better players than Montana. None of Marino's receiver would ever had been good enough to make "the catch" and as a cryboys fan you should know something about that play.
-
"The Catch" was made by TIGHT END Dwight Clark; and given the choice of Dwight Clark or Keith Jackson, Dwight Clark's own mother wouldn't pick him.
-
You stand corrected. Dwight Clark wasn't a Tight end. He was a wide receiver and given the choice between him and Brandon Lloyd I take him 10 times over.
-
Truce for a sec.
I was absolutely SURE that he played TE, so I looked it up and the weird thing is that NFL.com doesn't list him at any position except for here (30 seconds):
http://www.nfl.com/videos/san-francisco-49ers/09000d5d8066e640/Exclusive-Dwight-Clark-interview
Now at Profootballreference.com he's listed at WR for every year EXCEPT 1987 when a position isn't listed at all for him.
I never watched him play as I came to football in 1989 (Clark had been retired 2 years by then) so everything I know about him has been fed to me by my best friend (die hard 9er fan), or Ed and Steve Sabol.
Stranger still is that you can google the question "Did Dwight Clark ever play TE?" and it has apparently been asked quite a few times.
This day just gets stranger and stranger. -
That is weird. I never would have thought Clark was a WR not a TE. Good random trivia question, bet you could win some money "To what player and what position was Joe Montana's famous pass, 'the Catch'". I would have said confidently Clard and a TE. Good stuff.
-
then u would of been wrong twice who is clard;)
-
LOL
-
I swore I knew he was I WR, but when you wrote TE I admit I had to do some searching at first. He was a big guy though. The 49ers most famous TE I can recall was Brent Jones. He was a beast.
-
But the 2 Super Bowl starting line-ups list him at WR, so yeah, I stand corrected.
-
no one cares what you think
-
so bird that's for the loser cowboy fan
-
...?
-
sorry bird that was for the loser cowboy fan

hmmm this isnt a deep route and it is in tight coverage no smoke screen here either
-
-
that looks like the touchdown play that Victor Cruz scored on the over rated Cowboys last week lmao
-
That seems to happen a lot to the Cryboys.
-
THIS WASN'T A DEEP ROUTE BUT WAS AGAINST THE COWBOYS. CELEBRATING THIS IS LIKE BRAGGING ABOUT BEATING UP A REDSKIN FAN. SURE IT FEELS GOOD BUT THEY WERE BORN FEEBLE AND BLIND. THEY NEVER HAD A CHANCE.
-
sucker go hang out with the other frauds on the Dallas threads
-
Before you start going into crybaby mode know that I gave Auston his props. He's better than I thought, but he's not Jackson. With that being the case I don't care he didn't start. If he couldn't beat out the likes of Roy Williams, Sam Hurd, and Patrick Crayton that says a lot about him as a player in my opinion. If you want to go discuss how great a guy who couldn't beat out stiffs is, then feel free to make your own thread on the Cryboys website and gush all over the guy, because nobody cares over here.

Instead of questioning me why aren't YOU THE COWBOYS FAN posting a thread on how great Miles is on the cowboys site? Instead you would rather write meaningless comments. You can tell the world how great he is over there. Then you, Monster, Robbo, Canuck, Rupaul, and all of his IDS can discuss how great the guy is. If you are incapable of doing that, then maybe you aren't the loyal cryboys fan you claim to be. Just sayin...

DON'T GO SUCKER! I HAVE SOME (zip) WORK FOR YOU!

Eagles cant give a good argument as to why they wont sign him. That is there dilemna. They are only trying ti measure what the fallout will be if they get rid of him. the fans love D-Jax. Hes a competitor with heart. The Eagles FO are liars and cowards.
-
They reward a fat, lying, backstabbing , arrogant Reid but Desean gets treated like garbage. Go figure.
-
Of course they would! Reid has made them far more money than Jackson ever did or could.
-
He is elite but also he is a cry baby... I hate diva athletes there is certain ways to conduct business. Chris Johnson handled his biz very professional and stayed out of the media. No need to go on the field and quit or act crazy. Either go out and play... or sit down and hold out. PERIOD!
