Trent Edwards to Start Next Week

I'm convinced that the Eagles need a makeover at the QB position.

We need Vick to go, his style of play is simply too inconsistent. He can't read blitzes he hasn't seen before and has very little awareness of the field (multiple throws where Browns players were standing).

YES, he can take over a game. He single handedly carried us to the playoffs in 2010. I was actually one of the first people demanding him to start over Kolb after that Green Bay game.

But we don't need him to take over games! That's the beauty of it! We have much better talent surrounding him now than we did in 2010. Now our o-line is much more stable, now our receivers are more experienced and polished. And now finally it looks like our defense might actually be good! All we need is a game manager! An Alex Smith/Trent Dilfer type.

That's why I'm advocating the start of Trent Edwards! He is a 28 year old vet, unlike Foles who is young and inexperienced. And he probably knows most of the offense now that he's been through training camp.

I can hear the chants now: we want Trent! We want Trent!

Unfortunately, Reid is too loyal of a guy, and too friendly with the players. Remember him keeping McNabb 3 years longer than he should have? Actually speaking of McNabb, I'd rather have him than Vick right now. At least his passes would sail into the ground rather than the opposing team's hands.

  • Our OL stunk like dog doo and they need to design plays to let Vick run. They need a moving pocket and some imagination. The playcalling sucked. Vick can make plays but can Reid and Marty dial up the right calls.

  • I don't think so, but still the guy has only played 12 live snaps in a month. That's why I don't understand how the coach could make him pass 56 times, give it to a top 5 back for only twenty times when he's averaging over a first down every two carries. Reid failed to give Shady a carry the entire 3rd quarter. Pathetic!

  • I'm not giving Vick a pass here. I'm just saying it's not just on him. The coach clearly sees the guy struggling for whatever the reason and he just kept throwing the football. Reid is the personification of Einsteins definition of insanity. Still Vick was putrid. Throwing the ball into double and sometimes triple coverage. I wondered how many guys were running free considering how often he wanted to throw it to the Browns.
  • I agree with you here. Our current qb has good legs and that's about the only thing. His arm sucks! 4 pics is far too many in a game against an inferior team. We are screwed next week if we keep him in.
I would like to start Edwards too, I like Foles and think he's going to be a great QB in a couple years but it's too early for him to be a starter. I do not agree with the McFlabb bit though. yes it would be better too see the ball go straight to the ground in lieu of the other teams hands BUT I cannot take his laughing any more.

  • I've never been a QB nor have I ever played professional football, but I know you should not throw the ball across your body across the field. Why doesn't he know this and if he does know it why does he continue to do it. His arm may be strong but he cannot control it or his movements therefore he is useless to me.
  • He also has difficulty moving in the pocket. Vick may be a running quarterback, but he has terrible pocket presence. He doesn't understand the simple nuances of sliding left or right to give himself a passing lane. That's why he always seems to get balls batted back at him. Drew Brees is the same height as Vick and he's a master at moving enough to get open lanes.
  • They showed a replay of Vick getting hit at half time and half were late hits. Of course he is gonna be antsy in the pocket the refs are making it impossible for him to throw without sustaining some ridiculous late beating.
  • Just about every hit on a quarterback could be considered late if it's after the ball is thrown.
  • Thats bullsh*t EZ. The guy takes a sustained beating on almost every play. I dont see any QB taking hits like that after the pass. Admit it
  • It's funny that Foles being blocked by the same line didn't take as many hits. Coincidence? I think not.
  • exactly
  • Exactly is that Mike Vick puts himself in harms way by holding the ball too long, and choosing to dive rather than slide. Vick increases his own volume of hits because of his playing style.
  • I doubt Reid will turn from Vick. I seriously doubt Trent Edwards is good enough to be the starter for this team. If someones name will be chanted it will be for Foles. The bottom line is if Vick can't get it done the Eagles are cooked. Since they would be cooked I would rather see what the rookie can do. I know what Edwards can do, and his preseason performance against guys who aren't on NFL rosters hasn't changed my opinion of him.
  • I fear hurting Foles. I don't believe he's ready to take the step to the NFL as a recurring QB. He needs to sit and watch for a while before we can put him out there. If he goes too soon he will most likely not understand how to protect himself and he'll just get hit too often and most likely do too much damage to his body.z
Edwards has been here long enough to know that, if he doesn't know it by now he never will so there is no reason to have him.
  • The funny thing is I think Foles will get rid of the football. The line didn't play great, but Mike Vick holds onto the ball too long, and when he does throw it he makes poor decisions. I think they should go to Foles, because if they have to go to someone else the season is lost anyways. Might as well see if the rookie can play.
  • I also think Foles suits the offense better. I think he has a better arm than Edwards and could keep the deep ball as a part of the offense. Edwards dinking and dunking could ultimately take both Desean Jackson and Shady McCoy out of the offensive equation.
  • I dont want Reid to get another QB under his belt. Reid should go as Vick goes.
  • I think this season goes as those two individuals go.
  • I agree and right now they dont appear on the same page.
  • I agree. It could have been because Vick's been hurt. Maybe things will change now that Vick's got all those turnovers out his system.
  • Boy if there ever was a conspiracy to get a QB killed Andy Reid has the right formula. Pass 56 times. No QB would survive that and win. And the cheap shots that Vick took are inexcusable. The league needs to step in on this attempted murder.
  • Sorry I flagged your post by accident. I was trying to reply to it. I read somewhere the most pass attempts ever by a quarterback was 70 by Drew Bledsoe. I'm betting he had to throw that many times for a good reason. Reid on the other hand just kept throwing for some odd reason. Perhaps he was giving Vick every opportunity to work through his issues. If that were the case then he showed very little respect for his opponents and it almost cost him the game.

  • I still believe despite this terrible outing Mike Vick is AR's best shot of winning this season. Vick looked pretty awful though. I can't see Reid sticking with him for many games if he keeps turning it over.
  • Good analysis EZ. You may be right about Reid mis judging the opposition. It was a no respect game plan that nearly backfired. I expect a much more comprehnsive gameplans vs Ravens. If not, Vick wont get up.
  • The game plan should be Shady left/right/up the middle. Screens to Jackson/Celek/Shady and at least one deep pass per quarter to Jackson and maybe one a half to Maclin. I would like to see the Pass/Run ratio closer to 60-40 at the most. Of course I know Reid will say the reason why he choose to throw it so much this time is because he felt the Raves run defense was to stout or some crap like that.
  • One thing I know about the Ravens is that they giove a 60 minute effort whether they are winning or losing. The Eagles better be ready to hit.
  • Crap... Watching what they are doing right now... Not good if the Eagles don't wake the eff up.
  • They are alot like the 49ers. They are big, strong, relatively fast and play with a mean streak. Watch safety Pollard. That guy will knock someone out of game w/o thinking twice about it.
  • It's going to be a tough task for the Eagles. No doubt about it.
