Why Doesn't Andy Reid Take His Own Advice?
Recently Andy Reid gave Donovan McNabb a vote of confidence. He mentioned the following about his former pro bowl quarterback:
["I tell them to take him," Reid said. "I still think he can play. I think the world of him, and we had some great years together here. I'm always wishing him the best and a fan of his. I got a chance to see him at Brian Dawkins' retirement (ceremony). He looks good. He looks physically good. He looks like he could go out and play tomorrow. I would highly recommend (him)."]
http://theredzone.org/BlogDescription/tabid/61/EntryId/26268/Andy-Reid-recommends-Donovan-McNabb/Default.aspx
My question is if Reid truly believes this why doesn't he take his own advice and try to recruit McNabb as his backup? Let's be honest here. Mike Vick will at some point next season become injured. Hopefully that injury will only keep him out a limited number of games, but what happens if that injury will be for a long period of time? Can the Eagles really trust Mike Kafka or Trent Edwards will be able to carry this team? I think not! So then why would they not ask the guy who basically built Andy Reid's career? Why not bring a guy back who knows this offense as good as any other player in the league?
Could there be some future drama? Maybe after all McNabb used to run this system and he certainly has a fair share of supporters in this area, but if the team were to sit down with McNabb and explain to him how this could be beneficial to him as well, then I can't see why he wouldn't do it. How could this be beneficial to McNabb you ask?
McNabb could preserve his body first of all. Considering he's gotten a lot of wear in tear over the years I could be a good thing for him to rest it up a little. Second he will most likely get to start at some point this season and most likely for multiple games. This would be a tremendous opportunity for McNabb. There is a lot of bad press on him lately being benched by two different teams and his recent pity party. How great would it be for him to comeback and save his old team from a disastrous season? Considering he knows this offense he could step in and look like the McNabb of old. Something that would certainly make teams at least consider giving him another starting job the following season.
Could there become a quarterback controversy? Only if Mike Vick doesn't play up to his potential, and that's the only reason why I would see that being a problem. Mike Vick's a competitor so I certainly can't see him rolling over to give up his job to anyone considering how he got the job in the first place! With all of the problems that a McNabb signing may cause, they can't compare to what his signing may accomplish and that's a possible playoff run. Last season the Eagles didn't get enough wins to make the playoffs. I can't help but to wonder if they had a competent backup for those three games they might have been able to pull at least one more victory and make the playoffs. Andy Reid should take his own advice. He should have a sit down with McNabb and Vick. He should make it clear to both of them what his intentions are and make this thing happen. One loss could be the difference in a long playoff run and an early golfing season.
-
As a purely "Does the player fit the system?", "Would this veteran allow a team with 'win now' expectations, to keep rolling?", type of decision, it's a no brainer. Falling down should be this easy.
But controversy I think is the very reason this doesn't happen. The QB controversy of what happens if McNabb plays well and Vick doesn't, is a possibility, but it isn't the BIG ONE. The BIG ONE is the thing I think Andy Reid fears.
THE BIG ONE:
The biggest controversy is the one that doesn't exist and never did exist. Last year a back-up QB trying to resurrect his career made an off hand comment (Dream Team) that still dogs this team today.
No starter co-signed that statement, and yet the media has yet to stop throwing it in our faces, as if Jeff Lurie himself declared it. And it became a distraction in the locker room. A BIG ONE. So much so that even Michael Vick made a direct statement declaring it dead. But it still didn't die.
DeSean Jackson let his play slack last year as he played under protest. What he did not do, was go on public rants. He didn't really DO anything that was worthy of media coverage. And yet they HOUNDED him. Stories about him sitting alone on the bench during the Patriots loss ran for half a week.
The biggest controversies are over problems that don't exist, because they have no solutions to enact. So that snake keeps swallowing it's tail. That's fine for selling papers, or getting folks to tune in; but it's pure poison for trying to hold together a locker room that probably already has a little doubt to extinguish from how they performed last season.
_______________________________________________
Coming off an 8-8 season, what this team doesn't need now are distractions. McNabb coming back would have the local media SALIVATING. Particularly with McNabb being MUCH more candid than he ever was during his tenure here, and the local media knowing all the right buttons to push. Add to that the notion that McNabb still sees himself as a starter, in a league that seems to disagree. (For the record, he's definitely a better alternative to anything playing QB in Cleveland, Jacksonville, New York (J), Minnesota; and likely better than anything they have going in KC or Arizona.)
Fact is, the Eagles hate controversy and aside from signing Vick, they avoid it at all costs when they can. It's just the way they do business. -
So in a way you think this is about fear. Rather the fear of the possibility of controversy, but you don't necessarily disagree with me either. I would agree that McNabb still believes he's a starter. Actually I have no problem with that assessment. Mike Vick felt the same way when he was a backup. What alpha male wouldn't want to be the man. It might be a distraction, but it would be attention to the Eagles as well. Although the Eagles may not want distractions, the certainly LOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE attention! Everyone's feelings aside what comes back into my mind is this fact. If I were the coach I would rather have a guy who I know I can trust to run my offense and possibly get me a win instead of a guy who I can't trust and could mistakenly implode my team with stupid comments and suspect play (Vince Young). One victory could be the difference between the playoffs and watching.
-
I think the only reason they wouldn't do it is fear. As an X's and O's assessment, if I had my brain removed with an ice cream scoop, I STILL couldn't disagree with you. But the way they do business leads me to think they wouldn't get near this one.
-
I think McNabb will sit out and wait for a team to lose their quarterback and then try and step in for them, but that is a huge gamble for him especially with teams now thinking he cant learn new offenses quickly. I just don't think teams will pull the trigger at least not before exhausting their other options first. The Eagles are probably going to be one of those teams as well and that would be a mistake on their part. I may be the only person who thinks this way, but I think bringing him back could go a long way with smoothing over any tension.
-
cause hes andy reid
-
Nobody could realistically tell me they would rather have Kafka or Edwards over McNabb. Reid has been known to be a QB guru (Favre, McNabb, Brooks, Hasslebeck, Vick, Feely, and Kolb) and he's also been known to be a guy to resurrect the the careers of quarterbacks (Garcia, Vick, and Young), so why not bring back a guy a little down on his luck ans resurrect his career? In a way both Reid and Vick owe McNabb that much.
-
And THAT is what I was upset about when they traded him. I think McNabb should have never donned (lol) another teams jersey. Your franchise's all-time best in any category that matters should retire on his team. But even if he's brought back now, that blemish is still there.
-
I still think they did the right thing by trading McNabb. They tried the other guy and he failed. They now have Vick, but he doesn't stay healthy. McNabb in an interview recently mentioned he wouldn't mind playing for any of the teams in the league. He kind of sounds like a guy hoping to catch on. I think Philly would be a good option for him.
-
Let's face it. This "Dream Team" crap is gonna dog the Eagles until they are raising that Lombardi Trophy high above their heads. McNabb is a viable back-up but we've been down this road before. The last thing this team needs is another distraction and something else for those rubes in the media to throw in their faces.
-
Personally I think a bigger distraction will be a McCoy contract dispute if it isn't settled prior to the season. A bigger distraction? How about failing to have a viable backup for Mike Vick if he's goes down for the season? How many talk shows would be killing the Eagles for not going after 5 when they had the chance?
-
I don't think the Eagles are stupid enough to jerk Shady around. They'll get it done.
-
Right on cue! Well played Mr. Roseman.
-
Nice job on both sides. I have to say although the results so far have been mixed at best, Roseman sure seems to be making all the right moves in his young GM career.
-
NFL Network's top 10 records that wont be broken. Why wasn't the eagles on this list as the most consecutive seasons "overhype" and yet to win a SB. [synonymously]
-
This just in! The "bullies" finished 3rd in the NFC. Owned by the "over hype" all season. Is Dez Bryant still harassing outlet malls?
-
This season he'll be "mauling" and "harassing" the e-gals outlet masquerading a secondary.{synonymously}
-
Sucker you have always been a funny guy. The only person masquerading is Tony Romo pretending to be a straight guy.

-
Fear doesnt drive the eagles attention does. And for a few million bucks they can get tremendous mileage by signing Mcnabb. That would be funny if Reid and Vick fail and Mcnabb is the last one standing. Bring him back.
-
I think fear would be the only reason to not give McNabb a shot. I don't think it's a big deal, but knowing the Eagles I think they are hyper conscious of what the media is saying about them. My issue here is if you think the guy still can play bring him in, because frankly he's better than what you have.
-
McNabb put his body on the line time and time again for the Eagles. This could be another Trotter story and good insurance if eagles opt out on Vick contract. Reid is most adept at self preservation. he will do almost anything to save his own ass.
-
Woah!!!!!! I'm not stating I want McNabb back on a permanent level nor should he be back on one. I'm just talking for a season at the most.
-
It would don no harm. I think he deserves a shot at aring even as a backup
-
He can get that "shot" someplace else. I just want some insurance for this season.
-
He hasn't shown me that he has any game left but as a backup I wouldn't mind as long as he could handle being a backup (maybe in the system he thrived in he could show that he has a little game left). I doubt it happens, Reid likes to develop young talent and Kafka hasn't had time to show what he can do although like many I am not overly thrilled with his arm strength. McNabb, Kafka or Edwards? I honestly would rather see what Kafka has but with Vick being so injury prone maybe McNabb would be a better option. If the backup is needed more than a few games it probably won't matter anyway.
-
if vick goes down so does reid. reid knows who put the food on the table.
-
I think you are wrong, hollywood. If Vick goes down that gives Lurie the perfect excuse to keep Reid around for the last year of his contract.
-
Very true. That sucks, but it's very true.
-
Reid is in trouble.
-
Only if the Eagles fail.
-
This is his last shot. eagles have loaded the weapon for him. no excuses. I wouldnt mind a little more help on the roster but its as good as its ever been. And he really has no better opportunity than now.
-
You thought if he failed last year he would be gone and then you stated Castillo would be the fall guy. Looks like you were wrong with both scenarios. It isn't up to you, me , Eazy or anyone else on this website, is it hollywood? Lurie makes that decision with HIS football team, doesn't he?
-
not over yet
-
Been over a decade and he hasn't won a Super Bowl and you are predicting his end is near? Way to go out on a limb.
-
I think it does matter if it's McNabb, because if nothing else we have learned that McNabb is a system quarterback. He knows this offense and most importantly he's played with these players. I think Kafka can be accurate, but he's got a noodle of an arm and I doubt he could throw an NFL out pattern without it going pick 6. Kafka or Edwards gives the the Eagles little chance to make the playoffs if Vick goes down long term, but I think McNabb could at least get them to the playoffs.
-
I agree ez. You dont develop a Kafka. he doesnt have enough talent to begin with. Edwards you keep possibly. But with Mcnabb you dont need kafka or edwards.
-
It's about winning in my opinion. They can still keep Kafka so long as Foles has one of those season ending hamstring injuries.
-
I really doubt that Foles "comes down" with a season ending injury, Eazy. I don't think he would be able to practice with the team during the season and that isn't a way to develop a quarterback. The players that usually "suffer" those types of injuries are bubble players teams want to take a better look at the following year. The Eagles didn't use a third on Foles to hide him. Just like you stated earlier, the battle is between Edwards and Kafka. We'll see what happens.
-
Green 3rd string guys don't practice anyway, and regardless if they were to bring in McNabb they still have the same problem now with Edwards on the roster. Foles doesn't help the Eagles this season and he still can get in and learn the playbook. Learning the playbook is big. He can also come in and get "treatment" so I'm sure he will get opportunities to get something done. Again he wont get any practice time anyway since he would be third or 4th string if the Eagles kept 4 QBs. We know he wont be a practice squad guy since the Eagles could lose him that way.
-
Still think Foles makes the roster but we'll see. Not a fan but just don't think they used up a 3rd round draft pick to hide nor cut him. Wish that Seattle wouldn't have taken Flip's guy Wilson with their 3rd. Heard that the Eagles really liked him and would have taken him if he was there. Seattle likes him so much he is in the battle for the starter's spot already.
-
They wont cut him, but I doubt he's close enough to contribute now if he's called on. I think Foles is too raw to be ready to play, but there is no way he goes to the practice squad nor does he get cut.
-
I'm sure he's not but what 3rd string quarterback is? How many 3rd string quarterbacks could help a team win when called upon? I would guess drafting a quarterback in the 3rd round was more of the Eagles not thinking Kafka will be anything better than a backup but it sounds like Foles may not be ready anytime soon if at all. Some analysts liked him. Charlie Casserly thinks the Eagles can devlop him and I believe Kiper had him rated as his 6th best quarterback in the draft and gave him a grade tied with the 5th and 7th (Osweiler and Cousins) with an 8.5. Only time will tell.
-
How about A.J. Feely? He was ready!
-
Did Feely get his first extended shot when Koy Detmer went down with a dislocated elbow in a Sunday night win over San Francisco (I may have some of the details wrong)? I remember not feeling overly confident when he was called upon and right when I was starting to think that maybe the season wasn't lost if they had to count on Detmer. Let's be real though...everyone was surprised that Feely played as well as he did and for the most part no one expects a 3rd string quarterback to win 4 out of 5 games when replacing a backup and the starter. A lot of times a young 3rd string quarterback may get benched for a more experienced qb if it will be extended time he will be counted on. You do make a valid point Eazy, I just think Foles will be on the roster come September. I have been wrong before.
-
If Foles is on the roster then it means the Eagles have faith in him. Hear Jeff Garcia wants to make a comeback and play for the Eagles. I seriously doubt that happens, but if the Eagles reach out to him I think they would be making a mistake. I would rather have McNabb than Garcia.
-
Bryan Smith and Daniel Teo-neishem (however you spell it) made the roster as 3rd round picks for a couple of years and almost never saw the field. 3rd (and I'd throw in 4ths for the most part) almost never get cut that first year. Foles as a 3rd round pick and even more so as a quarterback is almost guaranteed a roster spot at least this year just for being picked that high. No teams like to admit that quickly that they made a mistake on a draft pick that had a shot to help the team.
-
Foles will be an Eagle in some capacity I have no doubt, and he wont be on the practice squad. He will either be the third guy or on IR.
-
he thinks he is the coach so wont listen
-
I'm hearing free agent safety Yeremiah Bell may be close to deciding on a team. I read it's between the Eagles, Chiefs, and Jets. I'd actually be for this move for a short term solution. Hopefully, the we can draft TJ McDonald out of USC next year. Early mock drafts have him as a mid-to-late 1st rounder.
Then again, Peters' injury sounds like it could be career-threatening. This might lock them into drafting a LT next year. -
Two Achilles tears within months of each other on the same leg could mean trouble. I think that position could certainly become a priority for them.
-
yeah and they took his money away. Sounds like a chronic problem. Eagles made a nice move signing bell longterm.
-
The Eagles exercised a clause that every NFL team can use when a player gets hurt during a non NFL drill. They didn't take all his money away for the year. I think they are keeping 3 out of 7 or 7.5 million.
-
I don't think it was a chronic thing. it was more unfortunate than anything. Nevertheless, the Eagles can't assume he will be back to his normal self.
-
everytime he speaks he says HUH
-
McNabb recently mentioned he would be willing to sign with 32 different teams so I don't think he would mind coming back to Philly. Right now he can't be that choosy if he wishes to stay in the league. Word is McNabb's been working out more and trying to get back into shape. As far as McNabb getting a shot in Sanfran, I have to disagree. Alex Smith actually had a good season last year and just got a new deal from the 49ers. McNabb would be going there as a backup. Also I don't think teams consider McNabb as nothing more than a system QB right now. McNabb needs to go to a place where he actually could get a chance to play and I don't think there is any chance McNabb gets a starting job with any team in the NFL right now except maybe Arizona.
-
I think if SF was going with McNabb it would have been a year or two back. Smith secured his job and just received an extension. They should have done it when Singletary wanted him.
-
I agree with Eazy and hollywood here 20dawk. McNabb has struggled with two different teams. Why would the 49ers possibly alienate Smith even more after missing on Manning by bringing in McNabb and giving him a shot to start? It's one thing to take a run at a quarterback who when he is healthy was one of the top quarterbacks in the league the past decade plus BEFORE re-signing Smith, it's totally different bringing in one who has struggled since being out of his element AFTER the 49ers signed Smith to a 3 year deal worth 24 million.
-
8 million a year is quite a bit much for a backup, 20dawk. They gave him 9 million guaranteed. When they paid him that money they were telling him he is their starter (and I would guess verbally told him also). I agree that no one should be sold on Smith and his one year of "success" but when the 49ers couldn't land Manning they decided to re-sign Smith and I highly doubt anyone else is starting under center come September.
-
Bringing this up I see people are still stuck in the past. There is no way in the world McNabb get 8 million from any team in this league. People still believe McNabb is the guy who threw 4 touchdowns against the Cardinals on a broken leg and totally ignore the guy who was benched for Grossman. My point of McNabb is if the guy can help they should bring him in, but if the guy can't then they should leave him alone.
-
The 8 million discussed is what Smith would be making as McNabb's backup IF McNabb was the starter in San Francisco. Just typing to 20dawk why it wouldn't work financially for the 49ers to take on McNabb with already commiting to Smith. I still question why they would go there anyway being that McNabb has floundered since leaving Philadelphia.
-
Forgive me for jumping in and not reading it all the way through. I certainly can't see a team paying Smith all that money to be a backup. All the more reason Sanfran stays away from McNabb.
-
Forgiven.
-
A 3 year deal worth 24 million and 9 million guaranteed was a vote of coinfidence to Smith as their starter. Bringing in McNabb as a possible starter wasn't where they decided to go when they gave Smith this contract and it won't happen later on this season. I don't think it's probable that McNabb would outperform Smith and at this point in his career I would guess that besides some McNabb fans not many people would. Even more importantly, why should the 49ers have the confidence you have in McNabb (what has he done lately?) especially with the gamble of alienating their quarterback who took them to a 13-3 record and a playoff win?
-
McNabb should not get 8 Mil, and there is no way a coach like Harbaugh would be interested in trying to teach a 35 year old QB fundamentals of the position. People don't want to admit the fact the reason McNabb failed in his last two spots were because of his lack of work ethic and lack of fundamentals. McNabb had no interest in learning new systems and he expected those teams to change for him. That's why he was benched twice and why he can't find a job now. Don't kid yourself.... McNabb is not talented enough today to beat out Alex Smith considering he lost his job to Ponder and that bum Rex Grossman!
-
Why don't the No.5 just retire? He had his moments, but it's over. And you guys need to let go also. When it's all said and done..Romo will win more SB's than no.5 not bad for a former UDFA rank #91 by his peers.
-
He is good for Andy Reid. Mcnabb was a good soldier for him.
-
A good soldier while things were going well for him but his frustration he showed after being traded (and benched) was to be expected.
-
General Maximus Decimus Meridius never allowed his frustration to get the best of him, now he was a good soldier. On football's biggest stage where legends are born, instead of hurling the ball down the field, Mcnabb simply hurled. A criteria that has hall of fammer written all over it.
-
I'll put it out there like this. If Andy Reid truly believes McNabb is still good then I believe he would bring him back. Maybe this is more about him trying to throw a bone out there for his boy, but he really doesn't think the guy has anything left.
-
why deosnt reid take some time off like in this forum
-
Uh What?
-
NBA playoffs and baseball are in voque I think
-
Reports are saying Trent Edwards is looking pretty bad in OTAs. Not a good sign.
-
Not sure why anyone would have much hope on a quarterback who hasn't had a whole lot of success in the NFL and was out of football last year. I get that the Eagles have had some success with backup quarterbacks but it is what it is. No team gave Edwards a job last year for a reason. Like I typed before, if Vick goes down nothing will really matter. Who knows, maybe if no backup quarterback does stand out this year maybe Reid will take his own advice.
-
I agree that if Vick goes down it's all but over and even with McNabb I seriously doubt their chances without Vick, but I do know this coach and that quarterback have won a lot of games together. If Edwards or Kafka are the guys, then we can pretty much pack it in once (if) Vick goes down for an extended period of time.
-
COWBOYS-5 SB's Wins/GIANTS-4 SB's Wins/REDSKINS 3 SB's Wins/EAGLES-nOthing{RING}a bell.
-
You can't mention the Cryboys/Redskins in the same sentence with the Giants. Those guys have done nothing in over 20 years. Nobody is interested in the history of has been teams. I will state that I think the Redskins have finally overtaken the cryboys as THE THIRD BEST TEAM IN THE DIVISION. Have fun in the basement going over your history lessons.
-
Analyzing the ramifications of this eagles team my diagnosis have lead to this conclusion ???????????????????
-
Are the question marks for your confusion to why the Eagles keep owning the Cryboys? The answer is simple. The Eagles are the better team.
-
The Beach Boys:Terrrance {old man} Newman-GONE/ Alan {no balls} Ball-GONE/ Frank {walk-on} Walker-GONE/ Bradie {lil'game} James-GONE/ Keith {bark no bite} Brookings-GONE. The New Kids On The Block: Brandon Carr/ Mo'{pick 6} Claiborne/ "You Better Call Tyrome" Crawford/ Rush Hour 4 {Carter & Lee}/ Dan {I rather sign with dallas than the e-gals} Conners have lead to this observation-The correct edification should be "The Eagles was the better team"..BY DEFAULT.
-
I know there's a sucker born every minute, but don't you think you're counting your bullies before they get their faces smashed in again?
-
I would guess that when the players that are on their way out came in, sucker had nothing but praise for them just like the new Cowboys. If one of us would have made a list like his he probably would have had a rip or two about how we think every player the Eagles bring in will be an All Pro or something to that effect. I've even seen the type on some blogs on how the Cowboys now have the best trio of corners in the league. How familiar does that sound? Typed it before, Cowboy fans and Eagle fans aren't that different.
-
You're right. Fans aren't that different. I can remember the "on paper" talk with Cowboys fans when they got T.O., Pac-Man, and the Tank fellow. They swore they were going far and it didn't work. Those same guys were talking the "on paper" talk about the Eagles as if they learned from the past. Now a few draft picks and Cowboys fans are sticking out their chest again. Truth is every team in the division got better. Trash talking aside this season the East will not be a runaway by any team. I think all four teams will be in it until late in the season. I also don't think it will matter what their record is when it's all over, because the team that comes out of the fray will be battle tested.
-
im sorry
but arent we playing the NBA playoffs and a sport we use a bat for???
just checking -
Actually, we aren't playing anything. We're discussing sports which we can do any time of year. You do realize that some people only like one sport or like a certain sport more than others, don't you?

Every major sport has it's own forum on this site. There are people discussing those sports in their proper places.
