"I'm not the least bit surprised about the Taylor episode ... why would I be considering his history, even since he joined the Redskins?"

I understand where Michael is coming from, but he could of been more sensitive in his words, I am sure he spoke before Taylor passed. But, even Skip Bayless was able to give his opinion in a more tactful way on ESPN this morning then Wibon did. He will do damage control today I am sure.

I saw that when it initially aired, I was watching it with my roommate and we both sort of looked at eachother awkwardly. Thats exactly what the situation was: awkward. I think he regrets what he said now that he has passed; or at least he should. RIP Sean (father of a 1 year old) Taylor.

Wilbon is paid to express his opinion.
He didn't say that Taylor deserved to be shot, he simply said that based on what he knows about Taylor's lifestyle, he wasn't surprised to hear that he was shot.
Honesty is sometimes difficult to take.

      tact is Wilbon's friend...

I don't think his comment was honesty..it was probably spite..he may perceive Taylor in a certain way, and that brought him to make those comments..And sometimes, honesty is NOT the best policy.
  • Pinkpanthrrr
Wilbon is a d*@k. He is wicked annoying and he needs to go to sensitivity training!! I would not mind if they pulled PTI..the WORST show on ESPN. They probably wont though because his comments may cause speculation in the media world, and you know they will broadcast all of Taylors skeletons' what ever they may be to make it sound ok (screwed up though) It is not good kharma to speak badly about the dead. What comes around goes around you fat bald pr*ck

Wilbon covers the team and knows a hell lot more than you guys. Dude is speaking the truth and he hung out with thugs, acted like a thug, so why is everybody shedding tears now that he bit the dust? Because he's a millionaire-celebrity-pro athlete?

so he deserves to get killed because he grew up in a tough environment? typical close-minded thinking you bring to the table, there, zippy.

and how, pray tell, did Taylor "act like a thug"? staying at home with his daughter and the mother of his child? yeah, that's really hardcore.
      • stillatin
actually he meant from the "not surprising" quote, which due all respect, is true. the shit was not surprising it happens alot to black athletes and to young black men all the time, let alone a succesful millionaire who, is STILL a young black male.
      • Who said Sean deserves to die because he grew up in a tough neighborhood? What many are saying, including Michael Wilbon, is It is not surprising that he died considering he grew up in a tough neighborhood, had several run-ins with the law and the filth that can exist in a rough neighborhood, wants to exist in the filth of a rough neighborhood, and refuses to move away from the filth that exist in a rough neighborhood. If you read a little more about Sean's past, you will answer your own question on how he acted like a "thug". Listen, it is a tremendous tragedy that Sean died. He had so much going for him. If only he had made a decision when he could have, to not continue to get mixed up with the "bad side of the tracks".
    • ptowncboy
BECAUSE HE WAS ONLY 24 YEARS OLD. EVERYBODY MAKES MISTAKES IN LIFE. DO YOU THINK ITS COOL HIS SON WILL GROW UP WITHOUT A FATHER?
    • No the real killers are George Bush and Dick Chaney! That what Rome should have said!!
  • IFChris
it should be noted that these comments were made yesterday when there was reports that Taylor was stable. in all likelihood, Wilbon will probably be a lot more sensitive to this issue on PTI later today but it's also obvious he absolutely hates the thug lifestyle so many athletes refuse to let go of (and I'm not accusing Taylor of even doing this. I have no idea what the circumstances were).

Bepplebutt's comment is correct in my opinion - Honesty is difficult to take at times - All these comments that question his lack of sensitivity but I see no one saying he was being untruthful

If it were Kornheiser who said that, he'd be fired. Wilbon is right, segments of the black community will vilify him and call him an Uncle Tom, but the truth hurts. This has nothing to do with color. If Andy Ried's kids died as a result of getting caught up in drug deals, they would have had it coming, too. I've been attacked for my stance on this subject, and that's fine. But Wilbon is right on here.

  • if sean taylor were "acting wild" or "being a thug" when he got shot, then the comments might be justified, but sleeping at home with his kid and his gf...the robbery and shooting are shocking....to say because sometimes you didnt approve of his lifestyle so therefore he "should have been shot" or was "more prone to be shot", what kind of logic is that? when wilbon spoke, all we knew was 1) sean taylor is wild, and 2) a RANDOM burglar killed him...how can you blame him, to agree with him IS racist, plain and simple...people whos lifestyle you dont agree with dont deserve to die anymore than you or me

I agree. The only reason people are getting away with saying these things is because he has past issues..which if you read this article they say "he was smart" he did not give out a lot of interviews, and when he did, did not present himself as ignorant or 'thuggish'.

If Sean Taylor was a member of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick would have him listed as "questionable: groin" for Sunday's game at Baltimore.

The game is on Monday night, champ.

Were you too busy dragging a dead man through the mud to check the schedule?
  • If you listed a top five of "What NFL player is going to get shot and killed this year?" Sean Taylor would be on the short list. Is it sad? Yes. It's sadder that no one is coming out and saying the obvious... WHEN YOU THINK YOU'RE TOUGH AND PLAY THE ROLE, THERE IS SOMEONE ELSE TOUGHER, WHO REMEMBERS THE TIME YOU DISSED THEM. Sean kept "It Real." Now Sean is real dead. RIP Taylor, you blew it.

blew what exactly? defending himself? or NOT trying to get himself killed while someone BROKE into HIS home? idiot.
    • Pinkpanthrrr
JR what a dumbass statement. I mean..Football players are PAID TO BE TOUGH!! What are you talking about..would you want a WUSSY football player playing for you?
  • I dont care who u r if u are a fan of football u have to pay him respect friend or foe.
    P.S.
That is the most ignorant thing anyone can say and there is no way to apologize.

YOU KNOW WHAT, THIS IS TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT HAS SOMETHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT ANYBODY THAT HAS JUST LOST HIS/HER LIFE REGARDLESS TO THE FACT OF HOW THEY ACT WHEN THEY WERE HERE OR WHERE THEY LIVED. SOMEBODY'S LIFE WAS JUST TAKING BECAUSE OF SOMEONE ELSE STUPIDITY AND ALL YOU CAN SAY IS THAT IS WHAT HE GET BECAUSE HE WAIVED GUNS AROUND IN THE AIR OR HE STAYED IN THE "GHETTO" SO TO SPEAK. YOU ARE COLD AND HEARTLESS HUMAN BEINGS... THE WORLD JUST LOST A WONDERFUL PERSON AND A FANTASTIC FATHER..SEAN WAS ONLY 24 YEARS OLD, HE IS THE 3RD 24 YR OLD FOOTBALL PLAYER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY IN THE PAST YEAR AND THAT IS SAD. MY COUSIN DARRENT DEMARCUS WILLIAMS #27 OR THE DENVER BRONCOS WAS KILLED IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR AFTER CELEBRATING WITH A FEW FRIENDS FOR NEW YEARS IN DENVER, DUE TO SOME STUFF THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM...HE WAS A FATHER OF TWO WHOM ADORED HIM AND MISS HIM LIKE CRAZY RIGHT NOW AND REGARDLESS OF WHAT "DEE" MIGHT HAVE DONE WHEN HE WAS 17YRS OR 20YRS OLD THE FACT IS THAT HE WAS A GREAT PERSON WITH A GREAT HEART WHOM SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN TAKING AWAY...HE STARTED HIS OWN RECORD LABEL, GAVE TO THE LOCAL YOUTH CLUBS AND MANY DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS...HE USE TO HANG OUT WITH THE WRONG CROWD BUT HE STILL NEVER CAUSED ANY HARM TO ANYBODY NEITHER DID SEAN TAYLOR AND WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM SHOULD NOT HAVE...MY SYMPATHY IS WITH THE TAYLOR FAMILY FOR I FEEL THEIR PAIN...I DO WANT THEM TO KNOW THAT EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY..IT WILL TAKE TIME TO HEAL BUT AS THE DAYS, MONTHS AND YEARS GO ON, IT WILL GET BETTER..JUST KNOW THAT HE IS IN GODS PROTECTION AND NO HARM CAN COME TO HIM NOW...KEEP THE FAITH...
AND AGAIN TO THOSE WHOM DON'T HAVE NO REMORSE OR BASICALLY STATES HE DESERVED IT--KARMA IS A B**H AND HELL IS WHERE YOU BELONG EXCUSE MY LANGUAGE BUT IT'S THE TRUTH...

I see where Mr. Wilbon is cming fron and those were some of my first thoghts as well. I ams till taking them into account as possible factors to Taylor's death. It is not being insensitive, it is being realists. People were not being insensitive whent hey were saying Pac-Man Jones was a lost cause. He would prove them right by doing somethign stupid the next week. It was realism. Now, I do understand there is a huge difference between Jones getting arrested and questioned multiple times and Taylor being shot. However. One must take into affect the history of the people involved in the incidents. As I have said earlier, my condolences go out to the Taylor family. No one should lose their son at 24.

On a side not has anyone heard about Stephen A. Smith claiming that white America needs to stop blaming Hip Hop on Taylr's death? As a white American, I can safely say that I have not used that excuse, nor has any white person I have talked to since. SAS also goes on to not include a single example of someone fro white America claiming Hip Hop as the reason for Taylor's death.

  • Let's get things stright. Elite pro sports stars are not thugs. They don't have the time to be a pro player and a thug. They don't have the time to be coner boys or drug dealers. They may come from area's where those things go on, but there are far removed from that life style. It's no way they can practice, attend meetings, and do the things required to compeat on that level and still be thugs!! Get real!!

  • Death is final, we have no idea where we go after that only speculation. Sean knows the secret now guys. We don't know who he said im sorry to or who he told I love you befor he died. It's done for him. But, guess what not matter what anyone say we have to go down Seans road, each and every one of us are going to die. Where will you return to. Think about your own house befor you throw stones. And while each and every one who has something bad to say about this man just remember your very words may be your very end. Now is the time for us to reflect on our lives, our deeds, our return to whatever or whom ever we serve and ask for wizdom and guidence. Go in peace no matter what color, you are and take this time so show love to a stranger for that act may be your very last.

First of all the situations that Sean Taylor was involved really wasn't that serious. Just look at them. Someone comes on your property and steals your property. A man at his age early twenties are going to act differently than an old fool of Wilbon's age. He did not shoot anyone and he did not kill anyone. That was an act of irresponsility. Just like when he did not go to the rookie thing. Didn't hurt anyone did not go to jail. He paid his dues SUCKA. He did not ask your fat ass for nothing. He manned up and took care of business. And finally the DUI. So what he manned up again and took care of the situation. Now what else did he do to your recollection that didn't surprise you ? Just as most folks that knew this Brother said he had matured in a broad fashion in the last three to four years. And who said you could judge someone ? You ever let the general public know about some bad moves you made in your past. Are you you PERFECT ? Let us all know. I am very disappointed that you wrote that column on this young Brother in that sense. As the minister stated, "He was doing what he was supposed to do, protect his family". Didn't your mother tell you that if you can not say something good about soemone but say nothing. You ought to be ashamed of yourself bOY !!!! And that is with the smallest "b" I could find !
