The Jersey Devil
Now I understand why they're called the "New Jersey Devils!" Legend has it that in 1735 Mrs. Shrouds of Leeds Point, South Jersey, already frustrated with her 12 children, yelled out "I hope it's the devil" as she gave birth to her 13th on a dark and stormy night. The child was born with horns, a tail, wings, hoofs and a horse-like head. That night the creature flapped its wings and escaped out of the chimney, only to haunt the Pine Barrens for the next 272 years, and counting. I wonder if Marty Brodeur knows his team was named after the beast. Check out the photo of this little Jersey Devil that soars over and through the trees of the Pine Barrens, day and mostly night. There have been many a sighting around NJ, DE, PA and NY. Some say he protects the area, but I just think that's why Jersey smells so bad.
