Week 5 Power Rankings ... The NFC East breaks its clavicle, out for the year
Power Rankings (last week's ranking in parentheses): 1. New York Giants (1). Nothing has changed since last week. They don't play a good team until Pittsburgh in Week 8. And that's if you think the Steelers are any good. These guys should be the last undefeated team standing in a couple more weeks. 2. Tennessee Titans (4). Now that the expectations for this season's NFL have been recalibrated, these guys look like the best team in the AFC. Defense wins championships, and the running game wins games. These guys have more than enough of both. 3. San Diego Chargers (5). Slow starts have been the norm for the Chargers, and I hate to make excuses ... but even without Merriman they're still the most talented team in the AFC. Tomlinson should sit but he won't, so here's to hoping he doesn't kill his career this year! 4. Washington Redskins (6). I don't think this recent win was a fluke. The Redskins were the classic example of a team with threats that needs a QB that can get them the ball. Moss and Randle El are sneaky fast, Cooley is the most underrated TE in the game. Did I mention that they beat the "Boys without Jason Taylor? They're also healthier than Philly, who might be better. 5. Dallas Cowboys (2). Can you hear that ticking sound? Tick, tick, tick, tick ... Cowboys lose game three ... BOOOOOM. Jason Garrett might want to strap his seatbelt on in case he needs to use the ejector seat. This one will end messily. T.O. should try a mafia style protection approach, threaten to play for teams unless they give him money. 6. Buffalo Bills (8). This team has a find-a-way mentality to them. Is Dick Jauron responsible? We'll see when the going gets tough. 7. Philadelphia Eagles (3). Eagles fans better hope Westbrook comes back at full strength. Or there goes the season! 8. Denver Broncos (7). If the Chiefs can light you up, you're a pushover on defense. But these guys might be able to ride a offense only attack a la Indy a couple of years back. How they recover from last week against to play Tampa this week will be huge. 9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (unranked). Speaking of finding a way to win. These guys might be the NFC version of the Bills. But I don't think their defense can put together a full healthy season. 10. Carolina Panthers (unranked). They beat the Bears, which got them this slot. There aren't ten good teams in the league right now.
