Auburn LB Quentin Groves: Bust in the making?
One scout suggested to me that this year's biggest bust might be Vernon Gholston ("He doesn't play hard every play. He's not a great pass rusher. If you look at defensive ends, that's a risky pick."); however, a more common refrain has been that this year's riskiest pick is LB Quentin Groves out of Auburn. Somewhat of a surprise, not a single scout or coach has questioned Matt Ryan's ability. Actually, not true. One guy did. But that's it. Everyone else loves the guy. And when you see him in person, he does have that "it" factor. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true. Here is what NFL Network's Adam Schefter had to say to the Yard when asked earlier today about Groves: "Whoever picks Groves is going to be getting a hot potato." I'm not exactly sure what that means, but by the way he was laughing, I'm fairly confident it's not a good thing. Another coach with whom I spoke about Groves said this: "He has really good first-step quickness. That's the first thing you look for. These guys (Groves, Clemson DE Phillip Merling, USC DE Lawrence Jackson) put pressure on the tackle right away. Quentin Groves is boom or bust, though. Is he going to be an every-down player or a situational guy?" Translation: Getting off the field on third down is key, but it also helps if you can pitch-in on first and second down every once in a while. Groves may not be that guy. - Dewey
