CHARLOTTE, NC - MAY 02: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland tee's off at the 6th during the final round of the Quail Hollow Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club on May 2, 2010 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)

1.  Rory McIlroy- How exactly do you become the world’s best golfer?  Well, you only need to choke, not once, but TWICE at the Masters.  Oh yeah, and I guess winning the U.S Open in 2011 has something to do with it as well.  Let’s not forget about his first place finish at the Honda Classic, or his top five finish at the WGC-HSBC golf tournament either.  I’m just wondering how long Rory can hold this number one spot, and my guess would be that it won’t be for that long.

2.  Luke Donald- Trading off between the first and second best golfer in the world must be pretty frustrating for Donald, especially considering the fact that it’s at the hands of a 23 year old in McIlroy.  However, Donald holds down the second spot in the world’s top five golfers for 2012.  Not only is Donald a member of the PGA Tour in America, but also the European Tour as well, quite a feat to say the least.  We won’t overlook the fact that he was also the PGA Player of the Year and PGA Tour Player of the Year in 2011; or his huge win at the Transitions Championship in May of this year.  A huge victory for Donald also came in 2011, when he won the BMW PGA Championship.

3.  Lee Westwood- Westwood, my favorite golfer, comes in at the third best golfer for 2012.  Considered the most consistent player in golf right now, it isn’t a surprise that he is on this list.  Westwood has even won a golf tournament on every major continent, including North America and Europe.  Westwood placed 3rd in this year’s Masters tournament to the hands of both Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen.  Last year, in 2011, Westwood won the Indonesian Masters, helping his cause for being one of the names on this prestigious list.

4.  Bubba Watson- I guess winning this year’s Masters tournament could propel anybody into this top ten list, and so it has for Watson.  Considered an unlikely candidate to win the Masters, Bubba proved himself on “the greatest stage” in golf, even while using an all pink driver to help him succeed in taking home the green jacket.  What’s next for Bubba?  We’ll just have to wait and find out, seeing as he just dropped out of the Wells Fargo Championship, saying that, “he needed more time to spend with his family.”  Nevertheless, we should be able to see Watson prove himself in more tournaments in the future, helping him to secure his spot in this year’s top five golfers.

5.  Hunter Mahan- For only turning professional in 2003, Mahan has made quite a name for himself, and quickly at that.  Mahan won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February of this year, and also placed first in the Shell Houston Open, marking his fifth career PGA Tour victory.  Mahan is most well known for being chosen by golf pro Jack Nicklaus as the captain of the U.S team in 2010, and for winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in the same year.  On a side note, if you feel like being charitable today, go to Youtube, and type in “Oh Oh Oh” in the search bar.  Mahan is in a boy band known as the “Golf Boys” and Farmers Insurance will donate 1,000 dollars for every 100,000 views of this video.  You best believe I have watched this video at least 50 times, and it’s because I like giving back, not because I like boy bands…
