PLAYERS: Alexander Noren
Defending champion Alexander Noren has withdrawn from the Wales Open with a back injury after shooting a 10-over 81 in the first round. The 29-year-old Noren had six bogeys, a double-bogey and a quadruple-bogey at Celtic Manor on Thursday. Gusty conditions and tough pin positions have affected scoring, with clubhouse leader Lee Slattery on 4 under. Noren qualified at Walton Heath on Monday for the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club from June 11-17. It it not clear if the injury will rule him out. Gary Boyd of England has also withdrawn after complaining of dizziness following his round of 87.
